Gotcha. I figured as such. Once I was able to complete my first run, I dropped the 'ball and went without it. Honestly, the parts of the game still giving me real issues are actually the driving stages. They're kicking my butt. I cannot hit the darned cars with bullets at all sometimes, so I slow down (and lose a ton of time), sometimes crashing anyways! haha.

Honestly this game surprised me. This is a really fun run, if not a little annoying with the shooter stages and driving stages. I was able to get my first 1CC today, and I'm hoping for a deathless run tomorrow.

Is that a legal strategy? If so, does it affect timing at all? Basically what I want to know is, if I get the meatball before every run, does it change the timing of my actual run at all?

For those that don't know, if you complete the first practice stage, the next time you start the main game on that same reset, you get a meatball which is basically like a free refill of life.

Sick run! Congrats on this one (also Girls team :O heck yeah!) and it makes me wonder... are there any more seeds like this that might be even better? GG!

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

Oh wow? Thanks for checking. I wasn't sure, and I didn't want to stir up a bunch of stuff. I appreciate you reaching out and checking your run. Definitely something you can beat.

I've seen this trend with many games. I tend to lie on the edge of the blade, I'm of the mindset that emulator and consoles should be on their own separate boards, but I totally get why that's not always the case. But calculating loads and stuff is time-consuming and annoying. I dunno. I get why splitting a board is a total hassle, but that's the best way IMO to run a board for the future.

EDIT: I didn't specify what I meant; I apologize. Emu and hardware should be split IF and only IF there's a feasible difference between the two, speedrun-wise. In this case, it sounds like there is... but that's just my opinion.

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

I would imagine that as long as the PS1 Classic plays like the hardware speed-wise and otherwise (loading, lag, etc), I can't see why it wouldn't be allowed, especially for this game since it's not hardware-intensive. That said, I'm not a mod so what do I know, but that's just my 2 cents...

I hope you can find a way to play it. This is a great speedrun!

That's cool. I wasn't sure because I was trying to figure out where the Cheat% WR starts and ends their run to have achieved their claimed time. I timed my run from the moment you gain control at the start of the game until the fadeout begins after the boss kill (the moment you lose control). Timing their run the same way, I got a 1:07.37, about 3 seconds slower than their claimed time. I would love to see how their run and mine compete, but I have no idea how they timed theirs.

I noticed there's no indication of when timing starts and stops. Is there anyone that can give me a hint on this? I suppose I could just framecount the run on the board, but it would be nice to have that listed in the rules anyways...

OK, and added. I'll update existing runs to include said platforms if I can and when I can (feel free to remind me if it slips my mind).

IIRC one should be a SAV file for Everdrives, and one is a savestate (to be honest, I can't remember for sure lol). SAV files should also work on emulator and FGPA consoles, anything that saves to a harddrive or SD card.

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

Oh a YouTube VOD should suffice (although I would suggest 60 FPS at minimum). Best of luck in your runs; I can't wait to see them!

Thanks for letting us know!

I reached out to the user that submitted them originally to see if they can help us out; if they cannot, or don't reach out to us soon, we'll have to see if anyone has these around where we can re-upload them.

In the meantime, the amazing Buffet hack in resources can teleport you to any level, give you any equipment, can make you (or your enemy) invincible, and all sorts of cool stuff! It's better than nothing.

If the save state links get updated, or we can find someone to replace the current dead ones, I'll let you all know!

I've seen MiSTer runs but I haven't seen any on GBA before. I suppose a test might be doable. A good one would be the cutscene after the countdown between levels, or when you reach Zelda. We've definitely noticed a difference from the original game and the GBA version, but if there's no advantage to it in this case, I can't see why not. I'd rather figure out a way to make this more accessible as it is, since it's such a difficult game to actually play these days...

If you do any research on it (and can refer us to it) let me know; for now, I'll say I'm cool with it (if any other mods want to input or any other folks, let me know here as well). GL in your runs :D

I just got control of the board... if you still want to submit this, I'd love to add your run!

I won't add it for you (long story, I learned a lesson a long time ago), but I'll be happy to verify it for you.

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

Hello all! I'm learning the game and I noticed in the WR they mention Brando's new 3-2 boss fight strat which skips the 2nd phase of the fight (with the aggravating detachable zombie torsos). Is there a specific method to pulling this off? I am relatively new to this game, and would love to learn more. Thank you :)

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

Just noticed, my run was verified, and my time certainly shouldn't be the WR... perhaps the board is sorted backwards?

It should be easily fixable, figured I'd let you know :)

United StatesJSR_3 years ago

But that's completely different though. Randomizer is more akin to a romhack or something similar whereas Minecraft, or another game like Virtual Hydlide, use generated codes to change the vanilla experience.

The very nature of a randomizer is to give the player a new experience, but the fun comes in the discovery of the secrets and the on-the-fly routing and logic breakdown required to beat each seed. There HAVE been rando tournaments in the past using spoiler logs to give runners a chance to "route" the seed out. Some have been faster than vanilla; others slower.

However, any and all interest in those routed seeds disappeared once the tournaments ended. These seeds still exist and could be ran and routed by new runners, but the interest level is so cold at this point, I can't see any real reason to include a leaderboard for something like that. I mean, which seeds do we include? Who decides? Like Pres said 5 years ago, the logistics alone would make it a nightmare. AND on top of that, what happens if an update later on makes the previous seeds unplayable?

TL;DR I sincerely doubt we'll ever see a Z1R leaderboard, and if my opinion ever matters on the subject, I like and prefer it that way.

I can't seem to find AngelDarksong's Any% Set Seed PB (current WR) anywhere! Is there any record of this run that is saved or viewable anywhere?

I plan on learning and running this game VERY soon, and I want to A: do my due diligence in learning and researching the game, run, strats etc. but more specifically, B: I always post the current WR for chat in my layout and if this is still considered the WR I'd like to represent that.

It was mentioned to me in my chat the other day that they thought my run should be a seperate category from RedPepper's, since they forego the training sequences in their run. Since the training sequences are challenging for a much different reason than the any% runs are (both are insanely hard) and any% is a much shorter run, I've decided to split them.

Any%: beat the game 100%: overqualify in all 3 training sequences (#'s required are in the rules) Turbo Allowed: Formerly Any% Turbo Allowed.
