To whom are you referring SoraMount? Because if you mean me I can assure you you're mistaken.
Thanks! We could use a more informal place to chat about changes and stuff; check my other forum post for details.
I'm excited! :D
Well, not sure if somebody messaged him or the timing was just a coincidence, but he's started replying to my forum posts now, so no intervention needed! Thanks if somebody did ping him about it!
Thanks for responding lovebob! If you go through your account settings (or the Follow settings on for any individual games you follow), you can check a box to have it automatically email you whenever anyone replies.
Thanks for the clarification on the cheats; I just found out about the wiki recently so I haven't quite gotten to all of it yet.
As for timing, I agree the key is probably best, but I can't decide if (in the game's current state), it's plausible. I've kinda gone back and forth on this one in my head a bunch. I may contact the developers and see if they'll make a short cutscene after the wheezing text for kicking Cornelius since right now it's a bit buggy and you don't always get the victory animation. I'm hoping they'll also switch the credits skipping to require the Start/Menu button, since right now if I were to pick up the key and then split, it would instantly skip the credits (since I use the spacebar), which is kind of a buzzkill.
Per my other forum post, I have a bunch of ideas for this game page, so I'd love to chat with you about them in a real-time setting, maybe via Discord or something. If that sounds good to you I can send you my Discord tag, or we can use Twitter DMs or Twitch whispers or something.
Thanks!
Hobz
FYI, I routed All Quests and did two runs of it. Here's the VOD to my current PB (at time of writing):
Hi there!
I've recently picked up the game Journey to the Center of Hawkthorne, which previously only had one runner (and moderator). The moderator appears to be checking for incoming runs, but not the forums, as he/she verified my WR, but has not responded to any of my forum posts. They have no information on their profile that gives me a way to contact them (besides the forum); I don't even know their Twitch account name (if they have one). I want to make several improvements to the game's page, including clearer definition of rules, new categories, and more, but I can't do that if they aren't responsive.
I was hoping I could be added as a supermod on the game in order to make these changes. Alternatively, if you could send the current moderator an email politely nudging them to update their profile information and/or check the forums, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
Hobz
I'd love to add some more categories to the page. I know at one point I want to route an All Quests speedrun, and I think it'd also be cool to try out a Hardcore run or maybe a Low% run. "Marry Hilda" could also potentially be a funny goal :D although I haven't tried that one out yet and don't know how interesting it'd be.
Hi there!
I mentioned this briefly in my run submission, but I'd love to discuss the defined rules with you here. I'm not the biggest fan of the current timing, since (IMHO) there are two other potential options that yield better timings: fully destroying the head after the weezing cutscene or picking up the key to Greendale.
Fully destroying the head after the cutscene (via another hit) seems better than the current timing because that's when you actually get the victory animation for beating the boss. Alternatively, picking up the key to Greendale is a nice trigger as well since it initiates the credits. Another possibility to be to end timing on picking up the key, but require that you must first destroy Cornelius and get the victory dance.
Additionally, could you describe the purpose of the "no cheats" rule? Are there cheats in the game? I'm currently not aware of any, but I haven't really searched for any either. I'm worried someone could get confused that the save option in the menu could be considered a cheat or something.
Hey there! Because the "thanks for playing" screen doesn't show up anymore after you've beaten the game once, but everything else is identical, can the timing rules change slightly?
I'd recommend "Timing begins upon clicking the first puzzle in the level select screen and ends upon clicking the proceed icon (bulls-eye) after completing the last puzzle." This way it's identical for both new games and games that have been completed already.
The general rule of thumb when things like these arise is to ask yourself "Do I see myself running both categories seriously?" If the answer is "No, there's really no reason for me to run x, I just want to preserve my old time," then there isn't really a need for a new category. There was a lot of internal discussion about this specific case, but that question seemed to resolve it.
^ That is my exact reasoning for it as well. It's unfortunate that 100% JJ in 2FM can't be completed in one playthrough, or it'd make things much easier, but it seems odd to end at an arbitrary "bring up the menu" point rather than an official popup within the game. If there were a trophy or something, or potentially even a character with different dialog, those would both be fairly good spots too...
Like I said, I don't run the game, but Gold/Silver crown have always felt weird to me since they're basically "partial 100% JJ" runs that we like to accept because they don't have synthesis. Since they're defined by the game, however, it seems odd to not end them when the game defines them. If the 2nd lap of final battles were different in any way, I'd be all for doing them, but they're basically just a victory lap.
Edit: Rough that my "^ That" comment landed on the next page. I was referring to Liquid's latest post at the time, which should be the last post on the first page.
@ArisCarroll can you screenshot or something? I know there's a chest or two up there (and how to get to them) but I don't remember a switch...
I think it makes sense to allow SSDs, although I would not specifically worry about it until we can get some concrete data on how the timing differs between the two. Of course SSDs will almost certainly be faster, but we may find out after timing that they're only faster by like 2 seconds (or, conversely, by 20 minutes). Let's make it a point to get numbers as soon as we can, but until then, probably not worry too much about it.
I'm not really in favor of splitting the categories for basically the same reason Biz said: Are there going to be runners for both categories who care about their times for both. Personally, I'd love to JUST have the No CoR Skip category (and just call it Gold Crown but ban it in the rules) since I doubt many (if any) people will continue to care about their glitched runs with both categories existing. If others disagree though and plan to actually care about both categories, then that's fine, leave them both.
On that topic, I also would love to see Silver Crown Level 1 removed as a category since it a) has no competition (there's only 1 run) b) has no videos associated with it whatsoever (the only run has no video) c) is even MORE arbitrary than Gold Crown and does not really signify full completion of anything d) has had no interest in it (in the form of runs) for almost 2 years I can start a separate thread about that in the 2FM forum if requested.
On the point of time change, I 100% agree with Liquid. This is actually something I've mentioned to several people for over a year, but never brought up publicly because I don't run the game. I think for 100% categories that can be verified after credits, you should split on final boss hit but record until verification, and for categories that already have to beat the boss once (such as Gold Crown) you should split on achieving the desired goal. Under this criteria, all runs using the old timing could still be valid and easily retimed. As another example, I believe Platinum Trophy RTA in KHFMHD should end its timing on seeing the Platinum Trophy notification pop up, which (if routed properly), would mean your timer would continue to run through the credits of your third playthrough until the notification appeared at the end.
If people have strong feelings of opposition to any of these points, I'd love to hear them.
Edit: As an aside, I recommend having discussions about specific games like this in their respective game forums in the future to keep things organized and also since followers of those games can sign up to get email notifications for those forums, unlike the series one.
PS2s are, however, region-locked, so if you're looking to play one of the older versions of the games in Japanese, you'll need a Swap Magic device or a Japanese PS2 (or some other region unlocking method). Most games do have region differences though, and that's something I'd love for us to surface more clearly in the game pages themselves. Try checking out the forums of the individual games (usually separated by region) in order to learn more!
To specifically reply to Silver now: I don't know why you feel that there's nothing for you to do. There are still BBS pages that are not set up properly ( http://www.speedrun.com/khbbs ), for example. Not to mention, it's not like we as mods were given a list of things to do and then I just said "I'm in control" and did them all. I just suggested improvements I thought would be good and did them after getting buy-in on the forums. ANYBODY CAN DO THAT. Hell you don't even have to be a mod to get the process started.
I'm all down for a discord group btw, seeing as I was a large proponent for the Skype group initially (and hate Skype).
So since I was out of town, I've missed over two weeks of forum posts. Let me state this again as clearly as I can, because there is some kind of gigantic misconception around the twitch.tv/KHSpeedruns channel.
I created the channel to...
- Provide a central location for viewers to experience high PRODUCTION quality content (things like overlays, transition screens, stable connections, potentially animations in the future)
- Showcase community content and events
- Potentially create analysis videos of strats, WRs, races, etc.
- Potentially create weekly events (similar to the ol' Aqua Crit Fight Night)
- Potentially start some sort of monthly recap show
- Many other ideas I hadn't even begun to flesh out
I did not create the channel to...
- Stream the KH Relay. At the time, I was coordinating with Puwexil who would've loved to have it on the RPGLB channel which, given the upcoming KH runs at the event, I thought was the perfect place for it.
- Give anyone and everyone access to it. For fear of a KH13com channel or Chibi situation, I never intended to share the login info (except with potentially only Rebel). While part of the purpose of the channel would be for showcasing community content, it was not going to be a "community channel." I wanted to be able to control what got put on it, sticking to a consistent schedule, and revoking privileges if necessary.
While that last part makes me sound like a bit of a control freak, you have to understand that this channel was intended to be just like any personal channel, except centered around showcasing others. I actually had 0 intention of ever streaming to it myself unless some sort of talk or analysis show did end up happening.
So why call it KHSpeedruns? Because it was available. And it perfectly describes the content that I was planning for the channel. We already had a channel to reach out for community-controlled streaming if we wanted: twitch.tv/KHMarathon. This was supposed to be entirely different.
Where the misconception started was that somehow Salyanz and White found out I had created the channel and then ASSUMED it was created FOR the KH Relay. I did not tell anyone it was for that. I did not tell anyone I'd be sharing login info. These were assumptions that were made and then acted upon. I was then TOLD (not asked) that the relay would be streamed to it and, since I didn't want to be a dick, obliged. Maybe that's my bad, maybe I should have reminded them that the KHMarathon channel existed and that this was for something else. However it is assumptions that led people to believe I made the channel to be shared by all, not what it was actually for.
Note that I'm not yelling at White and Salyanz or anything; assumptions happen. But I want to be clear that I received a lot of hate and fallback for something that I was completely and utterly confused about since I didn't know there had been assumptions that I created the channel for the community. I did not. Like I said, I knew we already had one for that.
I hope that clears some things up, but I have to say I've been very upset at the way people reacted to me simply making a fucking Twitch account. It's a free account, it's not like anybody "told me to" or "let me" make it. If you decide today to go make an account called "MegaMan Speedruns" and only stream SM64 to it I'm not gonna yell at you; it's a free account, you can do with it whatever you wish.
If anyone gets personally attacked as a result of the names being posted in the screenshots, let me know and I will remove them (although maybe then you will understand how you've made others feel). I'm leaving them for now though to hopefully keep a sense of urgency to this matter. I recommend this thread be removed if and when the situation is considered completely resolved.
I'm referring to the large problem of certain community members spreading hate and fear through offensive language. And I don't mean things like "fuck," because, as many people know, I don't mind me some curse words. I'm instead referring to the broad racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, and more that has been increasing as of late. To be specific:
(I will be using the word "you" frequently here. I am not referring to any single individual, but rather the collective group of people behaving in an unacceptable manner.)
This is not ok. I have thick skin, I don't even care that I was attacked personally here (amidst WILD misinformation and assumptions). The fact that the immediate reaction by someone was to spread hate instead of talking to me directly extremely pisses me off, to be curt.
Attacking any person, race, gender, or group is NOT OK.
The large trend of "subtweeting" instead of talking to people directly is NOT OK.
Making your TeamSpeak signoff comment this
is NOT OK.
This
is NOT OK.
I recently referred to myself as part of the KH speedrunning community and was instantly filled with disgust rather than pride, which was a saddening realization. Inside jokes and playful shit talking are all good and fun, but when your "jokes" aren't causing laughter and instead causing long-standing, respected community members to leave, it's far past time to realize you're not only contributing to the problem, but deliberately causing it.
