any% - Start a new file and get to the credits. Timing begins on file select (14 60fps frames before the first black screen) and ends on the last input (the last unique frame of the medal cutscene before the loading screen for credits)
100% - Same timing as above, but must get 100 pts on every stage
Individual Levels - The in-game timer is your time, and must get 100 pts to count
Hello,
I was playing the game to learn some of the character schmovement and compiled all the maps into one image for ease of use.
Sincerely,
Hattok
Absolutely! I have added the Switch platform, so feel free to submit your Switch runs.
My advice is to try and set some reasonable goals for the games you want to speedrun, and then switch games once you meet that goal. Otherwise, it takes longer to develop consistency for each game due to swapping too often. Besides that, if variety speedrunning is what keeps it fun for you, then keep doing that.
For capturing software, I personally recommend Open Broadcaster Software Studio (OBS Studio). There are others, such as Xsplit, but OBS is the most widely used as far as I know.
Ideally for streaming strictly on your PC, having two monitors will make things IMMENSELY easier on yourself. In lieu of that, for the sake of space, I would recommend having less splits for the time being so that it mitigates your chances of accidentally clicking on it. Unfortunately this means you'll have bigger gaps in splits and when you come back and look at your splits some days later, you may have trouble remembering where exactly you lost time as a result.
Alternatively, you can activate horizontal mode so that the splits are just taking up space on the top or the bottom of the screen. It's not my favorite aesthetically, but maybe this could work for you.
Does anybody have any interest in running the Second 4 Trainers as its own category? If three people total are interested in it (including me), I will add the category.
The First 4 Trainers category was an homage to the only two people who were running Pilotwings casually at the time, Twig and Sumichu, and I figured it would be a nice way for new players to start off with a shorter portion of the full game,
However, I do think adding Second 4 Trainers will spark a renewed interest in this speedgame.
Here is the TAS of Pilotwings, completed in 20:08 by tall. It's a great reference for learning some speedtech for Pilotwings!
Awesome! If you have questions or anything, feel free to ask me! I'll be streaming this next week so pop in if you want.
Also, I highly recommend playing the game after the First 4 Trainers to get a feel for the wind element in the second half! It'll save you a lot of headache in the long run.
I look forward to growing this speedgame. If you find anything new, post here in the forums!
Edit: Also, if there are some people that get into the game regularly, I would be down to grant mod powers because sometimes I don't check speedeun.com often enough to look through runs and I want to make sure they get accepted/rejected in a timely manner.
Also, it is worthy to note that Japan and North America are both NTSC regions. However, in a lot of cases, not only is the text often times faster, but they do introduce less console lag as well (Not sure if this is the case for Pilotwings yet). I can do some testing when I feel the need to order a Japanese copy of the game.
Edit: I ordered a Japanese copy of Pilotwings.
I will add the region option for all runs submitted henceforth, and I'll update the regions for the runs already on the leaderboards tomorrow.
Thank you for your interest in Pilotwings! This will motivate me to submit more runs as well.
This is correct. Emulator runs are only accepted for full game runs, not single cups.
The answer why was outlined in this thread: https://www.speedrun.com/mk64/thread/e2nxm
NTSC-J 1.0 and 1.1 are faster for speedrunning because there is slightly reduced lag spots, like when the train is on screen in Kalimari Desert.
NTSC-J and NTSC-U have version differences where some skips don't work on one version, but do on another. To use the current WR strats abney317 uses, you need to use NTSC-J 1.1.
How to tell what version NTSC-J you have? Turn the cartridge over and look at the backside. If it says "NUS-JPN" in the lower right corner, you have 1.0. If it says "NUS-JPN-1", then you have 1.1.
There are some interesting things to read about MK64 in the links provided below: http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/N64/MarioKart64.html https://tcrf.net/Mario_Kart_64
Did you know there's another music loop for the "Winning Results" part, but only after the one you normally hear loops 64 times (54 minutes and 39 seconds)? You can listen/read about this and many more fun things in the links provided above.
This is a great resource although a lot of new tech has been found and posted in the SDA thread for this game. I do want to attempt RTA runs Body Harvest but I need to piece together all the stuff in the thread.
I like this. I wish more people did stuff like this. I know dkr_paddy will run fun categories in games sometimes but I typically never see anybody else do anything of the sort.
My first EXTRA mode no skips was a 45:05. It's 100cc so it won't be as fast but dang is that Toad's Turnpike a crazy map.
As a joke, a friend of mine and I raced each other in Extra mode (he is decent like myself so it was fun).
Anyways, it got me thinking:
Honestly, I am surprised nobody else has started an Extra mode category and was wondering if anyone would be interested in getting competitive in this mode?
I know it's probably cringe-worthy to you guys who have been doing runs for years now due to the extremely fine-tuned muscle memory with 150cc and time trials, but I think it could be pretty fun and a great way to diversify this game a little.
What do you think?
