just leaving a post here to document that there is a code hidden in Kirby's Avalanche that can warp you straight to the "you win" screen.

To do this hold Right and L on controller 1 and Left and R on controller 2 either power on or reset the current game and you will warp straight to the credits.

This most definitely defeats the whole nature of actually speedrunning this game so I'd like clarification to be added in the rules that codes like this are not allowed.

speedrun.com mods PLEASE either let us disable comments or remove them all together on the site there is a damn good reason why they were never added to begin with

I've been a user on speedrun.com for 4 years now and the recent changes to the site layout is disappointing to say the least mainly because the news feed seem to take up 50% of your screen compared to the runs on the main page. The worst part about this change was that the news feeds are also in your user profiles which is so unnecessary if we're already going to see them on the front page. I've had to use 150% zoom to even view this site decently now which sucks but I hope that the layout will improve in the coming months.

You could always still add up the in-game time including the re-dos but it would probably be much easier to just run 100% normally instead of playing on Practice Mode

I've been playing this game for many hours and I am glad to say that my personal best is a 13 minute run (https://imgur.com/a/u9VY07N). I sadly do not have any video of it but I will attempt more runs while recording and hope to break 13 minutes (or possibly 12).

Note: I'm not asking for this run to be on the leaderboards I just wanted to share the progress I've made to optimize this game.

Hello!

Recently I have replaced the previous Super Mod on this leaderboard and have been verifying the recent runs submitted but I have also made some small tweaks.

You may notice that the main category is now free seed and that is mainly due to set seed being arbitrary compared to the actual game. Making free seed the default category allows for much more freedom and experimentation compared to sticking with the same seed. I hope to see more optimization from future runners who pick up this game. I also slightly updated the speedrun.com logo on the leaderboard to match the font from the game. I'm thinking about replacing the trophy icon with something else but for now this will do. ̷F̷i̷n̷a̷l̷l̷y̷ ̷I̷ ̷h̷a̷v̷e̷ ̷o̷p̷e̷n̷e̷d̷ ̷u̷p̷ ̷a̷ ̷n̷e̷w̷ ̷D̷i̷s̷c̷o̷r̷d̷ ̷s̷e̷r̷v̷e̷r̷ ̷i̷n̷ ̷w̷h̷i̷c̷h̷ ̷y̷o̷u̷ ̷c̷a̷n̷ ̷j̷o̷i̷n̷ ̷b̷y̷ ̷c̷l̷i̷c̷k̷i̷n̷g̷ ̷o̷n̷ ̷t̷h̷e̷ ̷D̷i̷s̷c̷o̷r̷d̷ ̷t̷a̷b̷ ̷h̷e̷r̷e̷ ̷o̷n̷ ̷t̷h̷e̷ ̷l̷e̷a̷d̷e̷r̷b̷o̷a̷r̷d̷.̷ Edit: The server no longer exists

Any feedback is appreciated and I hope to see the times go down in the future.

I'd say separate each leaderboard by each time that can be set via DIP switches kind of how the Mario 64 leaderboard seperates if you're playing on console or emulator. The default time is 6 minutes and 21 seconds which was used in the actual tournament back in 1990. You can actually see what each switch does on the grey cart label itself (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/videogamecollecting/images/e/e3/557px-1990_Nintendo_World_Championships_Gray.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100102023346). Having more timing options would be great if the default time is just too little for some runners.

I already posted these on the Discord but I made some theme assets that the leaderboard can use.

Not sure if the mods already have something in mind but if not then I hope this helps.

I should mention that the score you get in Super Mario Bros determines your pattern in Tetris so skipping Super Mario Bros would give you the same Tetris pattern every single time so that's something that should be considered.

I'll repost it there, didn't think about posting it on guides when I wrote this.

Hello there. I've been looking at some of the previous runs and noticed that not a whole lot of people know about some of the strats that some players use when playing on the competition cart. I'm here to just kind of remind players that these strats exist so that future runs can be optimized more.

  1. The score in Super Mario Bros determines the pattern you get in Tetris. Unlike NES Tetris, Tetris in 1990 NWC isn't random. Let's say you get all 50 coins without getting any extra points from enemies or power ups you'll get a score of 10,000. That score will then correlate to the pattern you'll get in Tetris. Some patterns are better than others. I personally go for the score 10,300 although I've seen players go for 10,400 or 10,500. You can then memorize the pattern and prioritize on speed.

  2. You can end Rad Racer early by crashing. Normally Rad Racer ends by your car slowly speeding down all the way to 0 KM/H. However if you crash right before you cross the finish line your speed will come to a halt and is much faster compared to finishing normally. You can figure out when to crash by looking at your score. I recommend crashing when your score is 60,060 or higher. Anything lower will result in your car nearly missing the finish.

  3. You can start 1990 NWC automatically by using a zapper. If you have a zapper laying around you can plug it into controller port 2 and for whatever reason it'll automatically start the game. This is useful if you want to get a ton of runs in without having to press start on the second controller constantly. Alternatively if you're playing on a Famicom you can use the Konami Hypershot controllers and press the Run button on Player 2 to start the game.

Hope this post helps someone out there.
