[DISCUSSION] Potential Cutscene Skip Glitch

Hi, everyone,

Back in December 2020, I've stumbled upon a cutscene skip glitch - I have no idea if it was discovered before, but I immediately recorded it for future research.

Today I've managed to successfully replicate the skip, both in reTHAWed and Original, non-modded version. This glitch skips mission-end cutscenes by exploiting a timing overlap between mission completion and NPC interaction. Below is a guide explaining how to replicate it.

The glitch occurs when the game transitions to "mission complete." By pressing the talk button immediately after landing a trick (at a precise moment), the game prioritizes the NPC interaction over the mission-end acknowledgment, skipping the cutscene entirely.

  • Mission: "Learn the Boneless and Boned Ollie"

  • NPC: Josh

  1. Start the Mission:

Begin the "Learn the Boneless and Boned Ollie" mission with Josh.

  1. Complete the Boneless Section:

Perform three Boneless tricks as required to progress to the Boned Ollie section.

  1. Perform Two Boned Ollies:

Execute the first two Boned Ollies as normal.

  1. Prepare for the Final Boned Ollie:
  • In my testing the best time for the transition is between 0:41 and 0:39.

  • Aim to land the third Boned Ollie just before the timer changes (e.g., from 0:40 to 0:39).

  1. Land and Press "Talk":
  • Land the trick within 5 frames of landing (1 millisecond) and press the talk button to interact with Josh.
  • Frame 1: Land the trick (triggers mission completion).

  • Frame 5: New mission begins, skipping the cutscene.

The glitch works best during these specific time transitions:

  • 0:41 → 0:40

  • 0:40 → 0:39

While the glitch seems primarily dependent on timing, these landing spots were used successfully:

  • Curb on the opposite street.

  • Middle of the opposite street.

  • Near the second pole on the cobblestone-paved road.

  • The time transition (e.g., 0:40 to 0:39) is critical.

  • Variations in speed, angle, and height of the final trick don’t appear to affect success.

  • The glitch was tested successfully on both reTHAWed and original non-modded versions.

I've also tested the skip during "Learn some wall tricks." and it did worked, but I didn't record nor notated anything yet.

This glitch is replicable and has potential for optimization in speedruns. If you experiment with other missions or refine the execution further, feel free to share your findings here!

HI, thanks for the post;

This skip is known. It's possible on all (or most) missions where you can end a previous goal and activate the next goal on the same frame. The ped on the following goal MUST be spawned already.

The timer being on a certain number is not necessary. It can and has be done during a speedrun on many occasions.

Check out the THAW TAS - it utilizes cutscenes skips at multiple points, many of them are in Beverly Hills.
