Star Control 2 any% - old school route

**Route by Cad225, guide written by happycamper**

The route is based on lmfurb's guide and implements some optimizations that runners came up with time. These differences come down to:
* picking up less resources at the start of the game
* send the Illwrath to battle Traddash much later in the run
* convince the Traddash to fight Kohr-Ah
* optimally use the natural occurring portal to get to the Talking Pet faster

As the "any%" implies, we only do the most necessary objectives to complete the game. This means that you won't meet up with all Aliens and leave some 'loose strings'. 

#Route
Dialogue options are marked in **bold**, e.g. **1x3-2x2-1** means that you have to select the first dialogue option 3 times in a row, then 2 times the second, lastly the first option. You can skip through a dialogue by pressing the "Shift" button when the alien is speaking.
Essential objects are marked in *italics*.
Targets are written in the form of System Planet-Nr Moon-abc, e.g. Sol 3a = Sol, 3rd Planet, 1st Moon (Earth's Moon)
*The first section up to the natural occuring HyperSpace Portal is on a tight timer. Which means that you need to perform all flagship-navigating actions swiftly. Time doesn't pass while you're inside the game menu, planet menu, fights or dialogs.*

After you start a "New game" mash Shift or ESC to skip the intro. This way you'll likely enter the game in the menu, so make sure you exit via "Navigate" next. 
#Sol
1. Land on Pluto -> examine the Spathi Eluder -> convince Fwiffo to join your fleet **2-1x10-3** (or **2-1x16** or **1x20**)
2. Land on Mercury, only *radioactives* are needed, but it seems faster to also get the *base metal* if convenient.
3. Fly to Earth's orbit -> meet the drone -> land on the Moon & pick up the *Moon Base*
4. Land on the Earth Starbase **1x5** -> talk to the Illwrath **1** -> fight the Illwrath -> Commander **1x2**
5. "2 weeks later" -> **1-2** -> go to Shipyard: sell both ships -> go to Outfit Starship: remove the Storage & Ion-Bolt Gun; outfit full thrusters, +1 turning jet, +2 fuel tanks & max fuel (should be ~130)
6. Leave Sol

#First trip from Sol - get Portal Spawner
7. Land on Alpha Pavionis 7 -> pick up *Ur-Quan Warp Pod*
8. Fly into the natural occuring HyperSpace Portal aka "Unknown"

13. Land on Arcturus 1a via portal O -> pick up *Burvixese HyperWave Broadcaster*
14. Fly to Alpha Tauri via portal F (or J) -> use *Burvixese HyperWave Broadcaster*, make Illwrath fight Traddash **1-3**
15. Land on Gamma Scorpii 1 via portal L -> pick up *Deep Child Egg Case Fragment*
16. Fly to Epsilon Scorpii 1 -> learn about Deep Children **5-5** -> flee combat

29. Fly to Procyon 2 via portal J -> use *Sun Device* to accelerate "The Process" -> end game plan with Chmmr **1x2-3**

#Third trip from Sol - Sa-Matra 
30. "another 2 weeks later at Earth's Starbase" **4** -> go to Outfit Starship: +1 fuel tank & max fuel (for safety +1 crew pod & crew it up) -> go to Shipyard: get 1-2 Utwig Jugger and 2-max Chmmr Avatar

#Tips for advanced runners:
* The optimal route for each run is a bit dependent on ingame time -> e.g. depending on how many encounters you had with ships it might be possible to catch the natural portal sooner or later into the run (to go to the Talking Pet/Umgah).
* Normally it is faster to manually steer your flagship to the desired star system and not use autopilot. The only exception is going from Sol to Alpha Pavonis at the beginning of the run. 
* Adjust the ship-angle towards your next target. E.g. before you exit Sol on your way to Alpha Pavonis you can point the tip of your flagship north because that is the direction you'll head.
* When leaving a planetary system to hyperspace certain directions are faster than others due to the position of the planet in the system & due to the zoom-steps of the game. If there are enemy ships in the game it adds another level of difficulty to figure out which direction is the safest and/or fastest.
* Mashing through autoscan on a planet is slower than if you dispatch the lander directly. Assuming you have memorized the landing point of interest. 
* It takes less frames to enter a quasispace portal if your ship is aligned north.
* The velocity in horizontal direction is larger (4.8 SDU/s) than the velocity in vertical direction (4 SDU/s) -> This means that some horizontal routes are usually preferable. (SDU = Standard HyperSpace Distance Unit)

#Star Control 2 speedrun walkthrough
*Version 1.00, November 2nd, 2003*

This is not a regular walkthrough of Star Control 2.  It is a "speedrun"
walkthrough, meaning a guide to winning Star Control 2 as fast as
possible.  It is intended for experienced players looking for a new
challenge.  However, it can also be used by first-time players as a
concise description of only the actions required to win the game, and no
more.


As far as I know, the following course is the fastest possible way to
win Star Control 2, in terms of virtual game time.  It was successfully
tested on The Ur-Quan Masters v0.2.  Excepting the Spathi on Pluto, it
involves no meetings with any unnecessary races, not even the Melnorme.
Minerals are harvested only on 3 planets in the Sol system at the very
beginning of the game.  After that, RU is earned only by selling gift
ships and destroying enemy craft.  The course requires going into
quasispace a total of 11 times and visiting the starbase 4 times
(including the required first and last visits).  The total number of
visits to the starbase can even be reduced to 3 if you are particularly
skilled at melee (or willing to save and reload your game dozens of
times to win a hard fight).

Note that in Star Control 2, time passes in regular space, hyperspace
and quasispace, but not during menu manipulation, planet landings,
conversations or fights.  Therefore, we can afford to make several
landings to grab all the minerals on Pluto, the Moon and Mercury at the
beginning of the game --- however, we do not harvest any more minerals
after this point.  Three points of general advice:
1. To save time, always plan ahead on the direction your ship is turned.
Have it pointing in the right direction when you enter hyperspace, and
also (less importantly) within planetary systems to reach planets and
moons as fast as possible.  This is especially important early in the
game, when there is a very small window of time in which you can enter
the quasispace portal without needing to wait.
2. Unless you have to avoid enemy ships in hyperspace, always use
autopilot: it goes in a straighter (and therefore faster) line than you
can manually.
3. Try to avoid getting into any unnecessary encounters, fights or
otherwise.  They stop your ship in its tracks and can waste fuel and/or
crew.

For the best time, follow precisely the instructions below, without
dallying around or going to any unnecessary systems or planets.  Follow
the given order of actions *exactly*: there are almost no deviations you
can make from it without wasting time.  In the following walkthrough,
whenever I use the word "go", I mean travel normally through hyperspace
or regular space without using the portal spawner.  Whenever I say
"warp", I mean use the portal spawner to go into quasispace, choose the
portal closest to your destination, and then go there.  I assume you
already know which quasispace portals lead where: if in doubt, find a
map of them somewhere on the web.


##Speed walkthrough:

1. Go to Pluto, get 5 tzo crystals and convince Spathi ship to join you.
2. Go to Mercury and get all metals.  Don't go to any other planets ---
  if you waste any time at all you will miss the quasispace portal.  It's
  better to go to Mercury than to Io for radioactives because Mercury is
  closer to Earth.
3. Go to the Moon, get all metals, get abandoned base.
4. Go to the starbase, give radioactives, admit base was abandoned, kill
  Ilwrath with Spathi.
5. Equip max engine speed, 2 turning jets (same as before), 1 half-full
  crew pod, 1 lander, 4 fuel units with at least 180 fuel.  To buy all
  this, you'll need to sell everything else including your weapons,
  storage bay and both ships.  If later you hit a Slylandro probe while
  defenseless, run away.
5. Go all the way to Alpha Pavonis VII (55.0 x 800.0), get Ur-quan warp
  pod.
6. Go to the quasispace portal (appears April 17th-19th just above the
  top star in Circini constellation, 43.8 x 637.2).  If you hurried as
  much as possible and didn't hit any Slylandro, you should be able to
  *just barely* make it into the portal before it closes.
7. Go to Arilou homeworld, get portal spawner, trigger talking pet
  event.
8. Warp to moon of Burvixie homeworld (Arcturus I-A, 965.0 x 577.0), get
  Burvixie caster.
9. Warp into Ilwrath space.  Go to Pkunk homeworld (Gamma Krueger I,
  51.0 x 55.0), get 4 Pkunk, get Pkunk ultron part (Clear Spindle).
10. Go to Ilwrath home star system (Alpha Taurii, 022.9 x 366.6), use
  Burvixie caster, order them to attack Thraddash.
11. (At this point you should be almost out of fuel.)  Warp to Sol, talk
  to commander, sell 2 out of 3 Arilou, sell 3 out of 4 Pkunk; buy all but
  2 turning jets and as much fuel as possible.  (Optional: sell your last
  Pkunk and buy 2 Earthlings instead, to avoid any other stop at the
  starbase.  This course of action will shave a few days off your final
  time but means you'll have some very hard fights ahead with only 1
  Arilou and 2 Earthlings vs. 5 Mycon, 10 Umgah and 5 Druuge, and later
  have to kill the Sa-Matra without a Pkunk.)
12. Warp beside Mycon space, get Mycon eggshell (Beta Copernicus I,
  600.8 x 263.1).
13. Go to Mycon homeworld (Epsilon Scorpii I) and ask about shattered
  worlds.
14. Go to Syreen homeworld (Betelgeuse I, 415.0 x 375.0 ), talk about
  deep children, show eggshell.
15. Warp to Syreen ship vault (Epsilon Cameleopardalis I-A, 593.7 x 393.7 ),
  get Syreen ships.
16. Go back to Syreen homeworld, have steamy love scene with commander.
17. Go to Orz space (Vulpeculae constellation), ally with Orz.
18. Get Taolo shield (Delta Vulpeculae, 372.1 x 261.9, 3rd moon of gas
  giant).
19. Warp to Mycon space, go to homeworld (Epsilon Scorpii I) and mention
  Organon.
20. Go get sun device (Beta Brahe I, 639.5 x 231.2 ) and kill 5 Mycon with your
Arilou.
  (Optionally: kill more Mycon with your Arilou for RU.)
21. Warp to Druuge space, go to Druuge homeworld (Zeta Persei I, 946.9 x
  280.6 ), trade eggshell for Druuge ultron part (Rosy Sphere).  Just
  offer to sell the eggshell and he will automatically offer the ultron
  part instead of the usual ship.  (Optionally: sell Burvixie caster for
  fuel.)
22. Warp to Sol.  Buy Earthlings, Orz, turning jets and fuel.  (This
  step is optional.  You should actually have enough fuel to make it
  through the rest of the game: skip this step if you think you are able
  to kill 10 Umgah and 5 Druuge with what you have.)
23. Warp near Umgah space.  Note: it's slightly faster to use the portal
  on the bottom-right of Umgah space than the one in Arilou space.  Go to
  talking pet (Gamma Orionis I, 192.3 x 587.8 ), kill 10 Umgah.
24. Go get Thraddash ultron part (Aqua Helix, Zeta Draconis I, 277.6 x
  867.3 ).  You won't meet any Thraddash, as the Ilwrath should have gone
  to war with them by now.
25. Warp to Utwig space, get ultron from a Supox ship (e.g. at Beta
  Librae) and fix ultron by using the 3 ultron parts.
26. Go to an Utwig star (e.g. Epsilon Hyades) and give ultron to a ship.
27. Go get Utwig bomb (Zeta Hyades VI, 850.0 x 937.2 ), kill 5 Druuge.
28. Warp to (former) Ilwrath space, go to Chmmr homeworld (Procyon,
  074.0 x 226.8 ), use sun device.
29. You will be automatically transported to Sol.  Buy a large fleet of
  Chmmr, Orz, and Utwig with your infinite RU but keep your Pkunk.
30. Warp to Sa-Matra (Delta Crateris, 620.0 x 593.5 ).  Use talking pet.  Kill
the
  remaining Ur-quan and Kohr-ah with Chmmr/Orz/Utwig.  Destroy the
  Sa-Matra's shields by spinning around repeatedly with your Pkunk, use a
  Chmmr to clean up all the Sa-Matra's bullets and then have it warp
  escape, and finally enter the front of the Sa-Matra with your flagship.

Approx. date at end of game: Nov 15th, 2155 (i.e. 9 game months after
the beginning).  This will vary somewhat depending on how much you
hurried and how many small slips you made in the course of the game.





#Bonus: SC2 Lazy Walkthrough

If like me you're sick of shuttling to and from Betelgeuse to complete
the boring quests, there's a fun, easy and extremely cheesy way to win
without needing to do too much legwork.

Remember that 2 out of 3 of the key items (the Utwig Bomb and the Sun
Device) can be obtained through a planet landing, and it's only the
pesky infinite number of enemy ships that prevent you from just going
down and grabbing the thing.

Solution: let the Kohr-Ah fleet of death do your dirty work for you!
All you need to do is get the Talking pet:
- Alpha Pavonis VII (55.0 x 800.0 ), get Ur-quan warp pod
- Arilou homeworld (appears April 17th-19th just above the top star in
  Circini constellation, 43.8 x 637.2 ), get Portal spawner
- Delta Vulpeculae (372.1 x 261.9 ), 3rd moon of gas giant, ally with an
  Orz and get Taolo shield
- Gamma Orionis I (192.3 x 587.8 ), get Talking pet
and stop the Slylandro probes (Beta Corvi gas giant).

Then go to some empty region of hyperspace, take out a book, and float
idly there.  (You can go around doing things if you feel like it, but
whatever you do, don't send the Thraddash or the Utwig to fight the
Kohr-Ah --- remember, the Kohr-Ah are your friends.)

Around February 2159, the Kohr-Ah sphere of influence will start moving
ominously through space, killing everything in its path.  When they
annihilate the Mycon, head to Beta Brahe I (639.5 x 231.2 ) and yoink the
Sun device.  When they get to the Utwig, head to Zeta Hyades VI (850.0 x
937.2 ) and grab the Utwig Bomb.  Then just head to the Chmmr homeworld
(Procyon, 074.0 x 226.8 ) --- they won't annihilate the Chmmr; however,
they do conveniently annihilate the Ilwrath --- and you're already ready
to fight the Sa-Matra.  Thanks, Kohr-Ah!

This technique does have the slight downside that it involves the total
destruction of nearly all the sentient species in the quadrant.  But
hey, you never really liked them that much anyway.

Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters Speedrun Route In 26 Steps (As of 4/20/21)

This is a full walkthrough of the fastest route used in the World Record as of 4/20/21.

Before starting, practice fighting 5 Mycon with one Arilou, 10 Umgahs and 4 Druuges with 2 Chmmrs (There are technically 5 Druuge but only 14 slots in Super-Melee), fighting three Ur-Quan and three Kohr-Ah with one or two Utwig, and fighting the Sa-Matra with as many Chmmr as you need.

You should also either keep a list of Quasispace coordinates you need to go to for your speedrun or a Quasispace map. You can also keep this document handy to remember which stars to go to and can also add coordinates to each of the stars, which are not included here.


1. Your first step when you press new game is to spam whatever key you use for special attack on ships (it is shift for me) to skip the into cutscene, and if it opens the menu on the bottom right, click navigate as fast as possible.

2. Go left and try not to zoom the screen and go to Pluto to receive Fwiffo. Skip his dialogue quickly by spamming your attack and special ability key, shift and enter for me. Then, you head to Mercury to gather Radioactives. You should collect the two orange Uranium deposits up and to the left of the middle. You should also gather the gray mineral next to them.

3. Whenever you go from Solar System view to planet view, try to be facing the closest direction to the planet/moon you are going to. Face toward the earth’s moon, but before that, skip the Ur-Quan drone dialogue. When you enter the moon, you go to the base and leave. The locations of all energy scans in the game are predetermined, so you can eventually memorize them and skip the autoscan.

4. Next, you head to the Starbase to skip Hayes’ dialogue. In all of the dialogue so far, you just need to pick the first option, and it is no different for the Ilwrath. Fight the Ilwrath with a cruiser and try to land 2 shots quickly. If they miss or are shot down by the Ilwrath, keep shooting or reset depending on how good of a speedrun you are looking for. After killing it, skip Hayes’ dialogue and offload minerals so that your storage bay is empty. Next, go to Shipyard and scrap Fwiffo and the Cruiser, then go to the Outfit Starship menu and get rid of an ion-bolt gun and a storage bay, and buy 3 fuel tanks. Then, fill up your fuel to 120 units or more. Page Up works in version 0.8.0 to put fuel in faster. Then, depart the Starbase.

5. You will want to move towards the left edge of Sol while facing up so that the spinning that happens once you leave is faster. You are running on a tight in-game clock at the moment. Open starmap, then press / on your keyboard and type p. Pressing enter a few times automatically sets a course for Alpha Pavonis. The travel there will take a few minutes.

6. Once you arrive, go to planet 7 on the top right which is a blue planet. On the bottom right of that planet is the Ur-Quan wreck. Grab the Warp Pod and set a course for where the Quasi portal appears. If you were optimal in solar systems and in Hyperspace, you will have enough time to enter the portal immediately.

7. Head to the Arilou homeworld up and to the right, skipping a bunch of dialogue but MAKE SURE not to tell them that you will kill them. If you do, they will not give you three Skiff vessels later.

8. Head down and to the left to the portal that leads to the center of Ilwrath space, which you can use a Quasi portal map/memorization to know to go there.

9. Head to Gamma Krueger and try to avoid the Pkunk you see in the system, and head to the first planet. There will likely be Pkunk orbiting, so try your best to avoid them, but sometimes it is faster to run into one, since you cannot run into another one for a few seconds afterwards. Pick option two then option one at their homeworld and you will receive the Clear Spindle and four Pkunk Furies.

10. Leave the system and use your Quasispace portal spawner to head back to earth. Enter the earth view from the left and hit the Starbase. Talk to Hayes’ briefly then go to Shipyard. Scrap four Pkunk ships and one Arilou ship then go to Outfit Starship, where you will buy all of the turning jets and about 180-190 fuel.

11. Head to the Mycon territory (bottom right portal) and take Deep Child fragments from Gamma Scorpii I. Quite often there are Mycon waiting there. You have a few options based on your skill level and the amount you are relying on luck. You can save before entering the system until there are no Mycon if you are playing very safe, you can enter the system no matter what and enter planet one then wait for all the Mycon to enter the planet view then leave, or the most dangerous option is to take almost the same route no matter how many Mycon are there by entering and leaving and hoping no Mycon are camping the exit to the first planet.

12. After you are done at Gamma Scorpii, go to Epsilon Scorpii I and ask the Mycon about shattered worlds. You will have to use warp escape with your flagship to escape the Mycon. There are almost always a lot of Mycon at Epsilon Scorpii, so you can do any of the options mentioned for Gamma Scorpii except you cannot rely on getting no Mycon, so settle for a few if you are using the safety save before entering strategy.

13. Quasi portal to Spathi space and head to Betelgeuse. Skip all the dialogue with Talana and then leave the system. 
Edit: Go down and to the left to arrive at Delta Vulpeculae. If there are Orz in the system, talk to one of them and gain an alliance. If there are no Orz in Delta Vulpeculae, then move to Gamma Vulpeculae and talk to an Orz there. Then, go to the planet 2-C in Delta Vulpeculae and skip the Orz dialogue. Grab the Taalo rock and leave.

14. Quasi portal to Epsilon Camelopardalis and get the Syreen vault at planet 1-A. Sometimes, Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah spawn in this system, so you can save before entering or try to avoid them if they appear. After that, simply head back to Betelgeuse without using a Quasispace portal and leave before anything creepy happens.

15. Next, you will Quasi portal to Arcturus 1-A to get the Burvixese caster. Then, you Quasi portal to Alpha Tauri using the Spathi portal and use the caster in that system. Tell them to prey on the Thraddash then leave.

16. You are low on fuel by now, so head to Zeta Persei I to meet the Druuge. Sell your Egg Case fragments for the Rosy Sphere (they offer it as a special offer) then sell your Burvixese caster for fully recovered fuel. After that, you leave the system.

17. Now, you Quasi portal to Epsilon Scorpii and tell them about Organon. They will stop chasing you, so saving is often unnecessary here. Next, head to Beta Brahe I. There are often Mycon waiting here, so you can use any of the options that you used at Epsilon Scorpii. You will encounter five Mycon at the planet. Attack them.

18. In this fight, you will attack them with Arilou Skiffs. Try to make them move towards you, but if they are moving away, try to teleport and get in front of where they are going. Shoot them only if they have shot before in the battle, otherwise they will choose to heal. When they shoot at you, try to keep shooting at them and lure their homing attack  into their own ships as fast as you can. If they escape with a planet, you need to get in front of where they are going, otherwise they will outrun you. If you lose a Skiff, use a second one, but try not to lose one since it loses time now and later. After you win, retrieve the sun device and leave.

19. After you leave the system, Quasi portal to Ilwrath space to Procyon II. Use the sun device to free the Chmmr and go through their dialogue fully otherwise they will not give you their ships. Next, go to Sol and build their ships in the shipyard by scrapping both the Skiffs. If you lost one of them, you will have to scrap some turning jets before building them. Then, depart the Starbase.

20. If the natural Quasispace portal is open or about to open, go through it (17th to the 20th) if not, head to the top right portal to end up in Arilou space. Head to Beta Orionis I to start the next fight.

21. In this fight, you will have to kill ten Umgah but still have one Chmmr alive afterwards. You should tractor them towards you, but not too fast otherwise they will go past you. Try to get hit as little as possible and make use of the slow turning of these ships by sneaking in laser shots, and ZapSats (orbit around Chmmr) have longer range than his attack can hit you, so you can also use those. After you are done fighting the Umgah, convince the Dnyarri to come aboard your ship, then leave Beta Orionis.

22. Next, you will Quasi portal to the top left of Ur-Quan space and go towards Zeta Draconis. On the way there, make sure to hit a Thraddash and tell them to fight the Kohr-Ah by asking about their species. Then, take the Aqua Helix from the first planet of the system once you enter it.

23. Next, you want to head to Supox space and try to get one to spawn in Hyperspace. A safer alternative is to go to Beta Librae, where the Supox live. After you obtain the Ultron from them, you repair it with the Clear Spindle, Rosy Sphere and Aqua Helix. Next, you go to Utwig space and try to make one spawn and give the Ultron to them. Then, you head to Zeta Hyades 6-B to grab the Utwig Bomb.

24. You are close to done now. Quasi to what was Ilwrath space to Procyon II and the Chmmr will attach their bomb and amplifiers to your ship and warp you to the Starbase. Skip Hayes’ dialogue and Outfit Starship, adding a Crew Pod and Fuel Tank, and add some fuel to your ship, minimum 15. Then, go to shipyard and add one or more Utwig ships, and then build lots of Chmmrs. My World Record only builds three, but it is safer to build more. It is also possible to build less, but it is very risky. In the current speedrun route, we put 50 crew into the flagship, but it is not necessary either.

25. Head to Delta Crateris and use the Dnyarri. Then, head to the planet the Ur-Quan were orbiting (it is red) and enter from the top to fight the Sa-Matra. The strategy to kill the Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah ships is to use the Utwig and let them drain their energy on your shield, then shot three times between shielding their shots, while staying close so that your shots do more damage. If your Utwig ships die, you can use Chmmr, but it is dangerous and not ideal. When they are eliminated, you can fight the Sa-Matra.

26. The Sa-Matra is eliminated in the speedrun using Chmmrs. Wherever you spawn, move toward the Sa-Matra, and use your lasers on its shield generators. When a green glob or fireball is moving toward you, try to shoot it down using the Chmmr’s laser and ZapSats. It is possible but hard to kill the Sa-Matra with just one Chmmr, so you are likely to use multiple. If the green glob launches you away from the Sa-Matra, let it screen wrap you like a gravity whip without gravity. It is dangerous but possible to lose your ship right as the enemy ship dies with every fight in the game, including the Sa-Matra, but in the Sa-Matra it saves lots of time because you do not need to warp escape your Chmmr. Once the shield is down, immediately destroy/warp escape your Chmmr and pilot your flagship into the Sa-Matra. Once you have done this, you are complete with your speedrun!
