Die To All Species category proposal discussion
6 years ago

In the interest of not cluttering the category request thread, I'm starting this thread for discussion of my category proposal at https://www.speedrun.com/smbce/thread/wshi8/1#kupsn .

In response to eddiecatgaming's question about the category (Thanks for the discussion, Eddie), I originally intended the category to include the challenge of collecting enough lives, which may involve getting a game over to get back to 3 lives and potentially collect more 1-ups. (Note that the rules require you to start over at 1-1 if you game over.) Personally, I believe that this makes the proposed category more challenging and interesting (especially in terms of routing) than using a game genie code to get infinite lives. However, I would welcome other opinions.

I didn't want to take up too much space discussing potential routes in the main thread, but perhaps it would make sense to flesh my ideas out in more detail here:

  1. Do any any% run and collect 1-ups in 1-1, 1-2, 4-1, 8-1, 8-2. Die to everything but a Goomba, a Koopa, and a Piranha Plant along the way. This will cause you to game over, and you can spend your new three lives dying to those three creatures in 1-1 and 1-2. If you don't want to wait through the cut scene to get to 1-2 on the second playthrough, you can either collect the 8-2 mushroom twice (at the cost of having to wait for it to go along the ceiling when you are small after dying) or get 100 coins along the way. This would give you enough lives to die to a Piranha Plant the first time through.

  2. Get to 3-1 and use the infinite lives trick. Then play through to 4-2 and warp to 5-1. You will have encountered every enemy by 5-2 and so can do the route this way.

  3. Warp to 4-1 and then run through to 5-2, collecting as many extra lives as you can. This will probably require a game over in a similar fashion to route idea 1. You see every enemy along this route.

I've thought about some other ideas for routes but these are the cleanest-seeming ones I've thought of so far.

Thanks for reading!

I do like this category quite a bit, and I might start running it soon. Also, I was pondering if there would be two seperate cats for this: the traditional way (through collecting lives and such) and the game genie way: inputting the infinite lives code (SXIOPO) and skipping the 1-ups, simply dashing through and dying to each species.

Either that, or we can just use different routes at pleasure whenever we feel 'extra confident' that you can succeed making the infinite lives trick. If we do combine the two I'm sure it would be make simpler, but either way is fine by me.

I'm glad it sounds fun to you too. I think I would just run without using a gamegenie code, but I'd happily watch a video for either version; let me know if you try it and get a run finished. I'm spending some time on walkathon but I'll probably do this next (and I might quit walkathon in a while, will be hard to get used to sprinting again though :P )

11x Categories - New Timing Method

Hey Folks!

Just wanted to announce a new change to timing methods for both 11x categories. The new timing standards are as follows:

  • Timing starts from power-on/reset (or game select if you're using one of the combo cartridges).
  • Timing ends on grabbing the axe on the 11th run.
  • Time betw
