before the wii shop closed, you were able to use the virtual console, meaning you could get old games on the new hardware. But the Wii shop has closed and so has the virtual console, so yes the only way to play it is if you already downloaded it, or you hack your Wii for it.

there are many home brewing tutorials, you just need an address card, wifi connection, and some methods need a flash drive. you can find them on youtube

Here’s a video that thoroughly goes through everything that you need to do, from installing homebrew up until installing wads. I can’t say how to find wads, but a quick google search should be all it takes
