i was speedrunning claire a and when i got to the cog wheel room in the red hallway, the licker constantly kept jumping at me. is there a way to make the licker not jump at all or control it so it stays away from you

Walk straight forward one step, then start using UP+Left to run past it. Do not hold UP+Left immediately. This is probably one of the more consistent lickers in RE2 once you have the movement down. This and the first licker you meet are probably some of the more 'consistent' lickers in the Claire A scenario.

Having the Grenade Launcher equipped can also affect how certain lickers react to your movement, so it's advised (at least for method I'm about to show) that you have the GL equipped or the movement could possibly be slightly different.
