Hey! I just realized that there is a new ruling regarding ways to capture the game, as wwell as a save/load prevention rule. as far as I know this wasn't a thing recently.

I find it kind of weird that those were added out of the blue without contacting any of the runners of the game. This means that all my records should be labeled as Emulator despite not being emu because I can't be bothered to capture my game feed on camera, which I also have no way to do with my current setup. Considering how important stylus control is for the game I feel this run at high level is extremly unlikely to not be done on actual hadware. However if you want to be picky about it, whatever it's no big deal.

The one thing that reallymakes me scratch my head is that on top of that not allowing game S&Q makes no sense on an Any% category. If you want no S&Q then it should be a separate category. Even if for whatever reason reseting allowed for actual RNG control, then this should be part of the Any% category (and if it was the case, I doubt it would be used because it would not really save that much time anyway)

Resetting the game is not allowed after a run starts because the DS and 3DS have different startup times, both with hard reset (power switch) and soft reset (L+R+Start+Select). The in-game save/load/quit is still allowed. Hard/soft resetting the game isn't. I'm sorry if the wording was not clear and you misunderstood. I'll update the wording to reflect that.

Considering this is any% I don't see why soft resetting (or anything) shouldn't be allowed. If it turns out one hardware causes some options to be slower, then tough luck. But as you said, it's fine to capture a DS/3DS without a dedicated capture card, and buying a new one isn't too expensive. Considering you only reset because something wrong happened in an enemy phase, and you would then need to save that second, it feels like a weak argument.

Out of curiosity, do you have timing regarding soft reset speed? That's the first I hear about it for this game.

Controlling a cramped DS for 1 hour, whether it's with buttons or a stylus, is less ergonomic than using mapped keyboard buttons and a mouse via emulator. For a slight ergonomic advantage, the DSi XL is the best "large screen" hardware because the 3DS doesn't have 1:1 pixel mapping. But it's still real hardware and the larger screen does mean longer movement with the stylus.

Considering the amount of apm and precision you need in this run, I would definitly argue that it's not true in this game. At the very least I don't see myself executing as well and efficiently on mouse+keyboard. I could see an OSU player being good with a tablet but that's about it. I do agree that the screen space to put your hands is a bit complicated, but the run is short enough to be too much of a problem. Also considering the placement of Start/select I don't think the DSi XL would feel better

I think seeing stylus actions on camera adds to the run. I ran a 4.5 hour JRPG, The World Ends with You, and it was entirely done on a DS Lite.

I I can see why, and I think I agree too, if you can get a good visual setup like you did. But I think I personally prefer running and recording clean feeds ^^

So then the world record I did (and all my previous runs) should be in a new any% category, as I always used soft reset if bad rng happens during C20 as its faster than loading

Well, I was called to look into those rulechanges, since it was unclear, where they even came from.

First and foremost: I reverted most of the rule changes. Emulator Runs and Resetting will be allowed and do not have a seperate category again. Music needs to be on for the entirety for the run.

I personally think just banning Emulators and Capure Card recordings just restricts people from trying to learn, how to speedrun the game. There is a reason, why you can mark emulator runs to begin with on the leaderboards and especially for a game with that few runners, it should not be that restrictive. Also you can do precise and really fast inputs on an actual console and until this day, nobody has really beaten an actual console run with an emulator, neither on AWDS, or AW4

As for the advantages the regarding regional / console differences: Those things will always exist and in the greater scheme of things, it doesn't make that huge of a difference as usually reloading the save is usually the fastest method. So why forbid slower resetting methods, when it does not even guarantee, that the strategy will work after those resets? I don't see any point in having to restrict it even further.

For the record: Those rules did not exist until five months ago and nobody, besides Gippy, were aware of those rulechanges at that time, until legrandgrand asked in this thread.

I would not mind, if those changes to the rules were discussed with anyone here five months ago. This was not the case here.
