So I realized I don't have 4 hours lying around so I can't do the run until next weekend or the one after. But I really want to share the new any% strategies I found while practicing my run.
Entire run change (Gold): As I was playing the game I realized how we barely collect any gold that aren't from enemies. Now, at first this didn't really matter as anything giving you over 100g that wasn't from enemies took a long time to do. But then I remembered that gold bones gives you 200g at the end of the level. So if I picked up a gold bone in A-2, A-4, and B2 (Might be able to get away with 2 levels), that I would have the power gauge 2 unlocked for B-3! And also by collecting 2 or 3 more bones in C I could have gauge 3 for D! (Although you don't actually need the gauge 3 in D-1)
Specific Levels (Non-small things): B-5: In the Conservatory (Piano room), after getting the dog out from behind the Piano, wait for the lights to come back on, and then walk at the door and spam X and you should skip the fight. ¤Saves 25 or so seconds¤ E-2: In the Jungle Exhibit, after watering the spike ball plant, skip toad and go right to the Ancient Exhibit (Not having toad skips the Sneaker fight in the Grand East). After beating the Ancient Exhibit fight, light the wood and leave it outside the portal, then get toad in the Jungle Exhibit and take the portal back. Pick up the wood and continue as normal. ¤Saves 10 seconds¤
Do you have any thoughts?
Interesting... Sadly, I'm not an actual runner because I don't have time to get a run. But hopefully someone that actually runs it will implement that on a run.
Those are some excellent ideas. I never even considered getting gold bones because I just wanted to avoid the E. Gadd call the first time. It is 200 gold and it doesn't take an extreme amount of time, so it might be better to go for them, but it still does take time. I'll have to do a run where I try getting gold bones. But also it may be good to think about not going for gold at all... any time you focus on getting gold, you're investing time. The current best known in-game time for the game is 3:01 (there is no video for this run, so that's why it's not on the leaderboard). That was set with 5948 gold at the end, which means he only unlocked the 2nd tier power surge and probably never focused on gold. Granted, this player is much better at the game than I ever was, so his time would be better than mine even if he did go for gold, but it is still worth looking into the idea of ignoring gold completely.
I also think that getting the gold earlier would make the run easier
Hey @Bananana, for your most recent run submission, I would like you to upload your splits to https://splits.io and add them to your run. If you need any help on how to do this, just ask. If I need more evidence, I will let you know. In the future, If you beat the WR time, more evidence will be needed. Unfortunately, a video will be necessary. I can't think of any other way to verify a WR time. This is kind of a weird place to talk about this, but speedrun.com still hasn't implemented a messaging system yet, unfortunately, and I didn't know how you'd like me to contact you.
In my most recent run (3:05:28), I was able to use all of your new strats. I really like the gold strat that you suggested. I had level 3 for D-3 and E-1 which helps a lot. Almost had level 2 for B-3. Your Conservatory strat is something that I thought was possible for a long time. I'm glad to see it actually is with the right approach. The E-2 route change also feels faster, even though I accidentally didn't use the portal back to the entrance after getting toad. I wonder if a route change like that is still faster in 100%... Also, have you done any searching for an out of bounds route? It'd be really awesome to see some more cool glitches in the run.
Congrats on the 3:05 dude! I'm glad my strats could help. Also in terms of OOB, this game is pretty limited because you cant change rooms like you could in Luigi's Mansion 1 (Edit: I mean movement between rooms is more limited that Lm 1). I'll look into it, but any strat will be hard.
On the topic of Strats, is there any way to manipulate the mouse in A-1 to always get the key near the bottom of the stairs or is it entirely RNG?
I actually thought it was rng for a long time, but it turns out that the mouse stops for a moment when you look at it. You can hear the mouse's jump sound (twice) as well. It's hard to describe how to get this right, but I can say that you need to look at where the mouse is as you head down to it (watch your flashlight). I guess just watch a run and see how their flashlight moves. (I have no clue if this is any helpful)
Yeah, it's not rng; it's just movement. Whenever you put the flashlight onto the mouse, it flinches. It will only flinch once though, so to make it flinch a second time, the flashlight needs to come off and back onto the mouse. To make this happen, you need to do some fairly precise movement. It starts with where you are when the mouse cutscene thing starts. I find that it's best to position Luigi just below the carpet in front of the doors. Any further away from the stairs, the mouse won't flinch at all. Any closer, you risk running into to railing. Now for the rest of the trick... the first flinch comes from just immediately looking in the general direction of the mouse. Just run to the stairs. Be sure to keep a diagonal angle though to keep from hitting the railing and to eventually get the flashlight off the mouse. The second flinch happens when you reach the stairs. You turn Luigi to run straight down. If the flashlight was pointed enough to the right, then it will have come off the mouse. Moving Luigi straight down will move the flashlight back onto the mouse for a second flinch. If all of this makes sense, then you'll see what I'm talking about by watching a successful early mouse. Here I got it in my 4:10:59 100% run at 25:53 in the video
I Had a go at it in a run this morning, and it seemed to work, but then the run died, thanks to the crows in E-3. If only there were a way to kill the crows before they started ruining my runs.
Ah, you're talking about the pesky ones in the Jungle Exhibit. You can actually kill the crows with the strobulb before using the gold bloonberry. I think that there are only like 2 or 3. I can't remember though
I might do that when I get a chance to do another run, but it would probably be faster to figure out places where the crows can't get to you when you're collecting the coins.
I was experimenting with pause buffering greenhouse skip, and managed to get it without cancelling Luigi being scared the first time. Is there any chance that this could save time if pulled off successfully?
Also, Congrats to Banananana on the WR
I'm not really sure what you mean here but Luigi getting scared the first time doesn't matter, it's only the second time that matters. I also highly recommend discord for things like this because we can respond much faster than here
Ok, I thought the first interruption mattered, as Riidolsk got both in his 100% run. I'll also look into joining the Discord server.
