Floppy vs CD-Version

Hi Guys and Girls,

I have just finished my run of TSOMI on my Amiga emulator.

You maybe aware that there are some differences in both versions. Like:

  • Not skipable Dialog (but you can speed up the Textmessages)
  • CD-Version runs and loads a bit faster (have to check out the whdload version)
  • Speedglitch idk I cant activate it (maybe it does not work here)
  • Different Ending ?

Is it possible (and does it make sense) to split the Leaderboard into CD-Version and Floppy Version? If the differences are to minor of course I am also happy to be ranked in the current leaderboard.

You can check out my run here:

I am using WinUAE for emulation and using floppy disc images.

Pretty sure I can squeeze out some more minutes.

Have fun

Heya, welcome.

Interesting choice. Although I would say its not worth creating another category since this is much slower. Unless more people ran it. I will however add Amiga as a platform.

I would be interested if you can try getting the speed glitch to work. Oh and what's this different ending you hint at?

Anyway, go ahead and submit it and it can go on the leaderboard.

Heya Thanks for replying and adding the platform.

I am just playing around with a lot Amiga games lately, this was next :) It is totally fine to be ranked on the same board, maybe I can claim 4th in the near future.

About the different endings, maybe I am jut missing it, but pretty sure that Herman does not appear in my ending. I am also missing the sparkle on the Lucasfilm Logo, have to try to escape it at the correct time (will give it a try)

Getting the glitch is not too hard, it's harder to be sure you have it. I always had to time how long it took to walk from the lookout to the bar door, that should make it clear if you are walking faster.

Regarding the Hermanless ending, that's interesting he doesn't appear. I don't see you do anything different. Maybe that's just a version difference.

Cool thx.

I ran some Tests for activating the Glitsch, here my results:

Logo Esacpe after 5s at Bar at 23s Logo Esacpe after 4s at Bar at 21-22s Logo Esacpe after 3s at Bar at 20-21s Logo Esacpe after 2s at Bar at 20s

Can you tell the time difference with and without Glitsch? Without the sparkle I was using the Music and the time past in your Run as reference. I think escaping between 3-4s should be correct in my case.

I was also playing a little bit further and could not notice a big time difference to my own run as well. Is it possible to run the floppy version on SCUMMVM like Monkey 2 offers? So you can try it yourself.

About Herman: Maybe cut throughout Space Limitations and later readded for CD-Version. Maybe there is more. Some parts I do indeed different like buying the boat without refusing any extras or blowing up the damn with help of the sun...dunno if this affects the game in any kind.

You can tell the difference for sure the longer you play. The longer you go into a run without this glitch compared to having it the more obvious it becomes that you lose time.

Of course also the more you run the game you will become more used to how fast the game is, so if you didn't have the glitch you would be able to tell fairly quickly. After 150+ runs I'm 99% sure I can tell if I don't have the glitch as soon as Guybrush walks past the poster.

I have no idea about running the floppy version. We all just use the cd-rom version by default.

You can indeed use the lens in the spyglass to blow up the dam instead. It could be faster since you avoid a line of dialogue you have to read when you pick up the rock. I tried it out and I found if you put the gunpowder on the dam when you ENTER the scene for the first time then it's ready for you on the way back so you can use the sun on the lens (but only works when used in the correct position, otherwise Guybrush just burns the scenery. So it can result in a mistake). More testing is required on this. The difference between the strats may be almost unnoticeable.

Hi,

I will test this glitsch again anytime soon, thx for some more details on this.

Yeah some puzzles can solved in different ways (I always used the sun to blow up the damn, because this solution blow my mind as a kid...so cool^^) - did not realize you can save an extra line of dialog. In correlation to your post about the sowrd fight insults (onyl knew one Multi-Insult [with the breath], great stuff btw). We (or Me) can create a Topic with the different solutions to figure out which one iis the fastest. I.E. like mentioned above, how to blow up the damn or howto talk down Stan and so on.

What really annoys me in the floppy version is, that you cant skip the dialog with the period key...in MI2 it works or is it another key? On the other hand in TSOMI you can scroll through your inventory and select items via the number keys 1-6 which is not possible in MI2 so weird.

Q - scrolls the inventory up A - scrolls the inventory down 1-6 - selects from inventory objects shown on the screen

Also does anybody has some exp with this function: Reposition Instantly CTRL r (use instant repositioning if you find scrolling too slow)

Thx
