Fix black screen on steam - keyboard method for 3D on/off

Fixes Issues with Peggle on newer PCs with Windows 10+ and a modern processor and graphics card.

The game starts and loads normally, but after loading or after selecting something on the menu, the game hangs with a black screen or starts flashing black and white.
This is caused by the 3D hardware acceleration being active.
This is how you deactivate hardware acceleration with the keyboard:

Fix
Run the game and make sure it is the active window
Press and keep pressed on the keyboard the keys Ctrl and Alt, then press D. The default Windows notification sound will play. Release Ctrl and Alt.
Press Shift + F8. If it pops up a message saying "3D Mode: Off", now the problem is fixed.
If the message says "3D Mode: On", press Shift + F8 again.
If you want to know if the "3D Mode" is on or not, press F8.

Installing the no-pause mod on Steam version on Windows

I'll leave the guide up anyway, it might help someone.

Since a few months ago, the rules have allowed using the no pause mod in runs. It simply disables pausing the game when you click on another window. It's a small quality-of-life thing so you can switch the song you're listening to in the middle of the run for example, without losing any time.

Short version:
Replace Peggle.exe with the modded one. Delete partner.xml in the properties folder. Copy the userdata folder from ProgramData/Steam/Peggle to ProgramData/PopCap Games/Peggle.

Step-by-step version:

1. Go to the Resources tab and download Deluxe and Nights no pause mod. Open the .zip file and extract the peggle-no-pause.exe file, by dragging it to your desktop for example.

2. Open the Steam Peggle directory. In Steam, go to Library, right click on Peggle Deluxe, and go to Manage -> Browse local files. The Peggle Deluxe directory should open up.
You can also manually find it in Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Peggle Deluxe.

3. Delete Peggle.exe. Go to the properties folder and delete partner.xml too. Otherwise you'll get an error message when opening the game. Don't worry, you can recover the original files easily. I'll explain how later.

4. Move the peggle-no-pause.exe to the Peggle Deluxe folder, and rename it to "Peggle".

5. Open Peggle in Steam. Everything should work, except your save files seem to have vanished. The no pause mod is based on the non-steam version, and it uses another folder for save files. That's alright, we can copy the Steam save files to the new location. Close Peggle.

5. You have to enable showing hidden folders in your Windows settings. Type "folder" to the Windows search, and you should find "File Explorer Settings". You can also find it in your Control Panel. Open it. Go to the View tab, and find the "Hidden files and folders" setting. Change it to "Show hidden files..." and press OK.

6. Your Steam save folder should be in C:/ProgramData/Steam/Peggle/userdata. Copy the whole userdata folder.

7. Go to C:/ProgramData/PopCap Games/Peggle. Paste the userdata folder.

8. Everything should work correctly now. The game should keep running even when you click away from the game window.

To uninstall the mod: Right click on Peggle Deluxe on Steam -> Properties -> Local files -> Verify integrity of game files. Steam will delete any non-original files, and redownload the original ones. You can do steps 7 and 6 in reverse to move your save files back to the Steam save file location again.

In scott% you can use right click to speed up the game at all times. Holding right click for the whole run is kind of tiresome, so I use a simple AutoHotKey script to invert right click. It makes the game speed up by default and slows it down when I hold right click. Much nicer, right? So, here's how to do it:

1. Download and install AutoHotKey: https://www.autohotkey.com/
2. Right click on the desktop, click New -> AutoHotkey Script. Give the file a name.
3. Open the .ahk file you just created in Notepad or any text editing program.
4. The file already has text in it, you can leave it there. Copy and paste this below:

RButton::click, up, right
RButton Up::click, down, right
Esc::ExitApp

5. Save the file.
6. Open the file to run the script when you're ready to start your run.
7. Press esc to stop the script when you are done.

When the script is running, using Windows is obviously tricky. That's why I put the esc command in, so you can easily shut down the script. Also, using the menu buttons in-game requires you to hold right click. Enjoy playing scott%!
