What's the point of having Official "Unofficial" ะ•mu Leaderboard thats off SRC.

Emu runs might have an advantage over Wii or VC, but no internal advantage over themselves. What's the point of having a leaderboard for them thats officially unofficial just to have it not on SRC, instead of just putting them in a separate Tab like all other games do it. Yes, I've read https://www.speedrun.com/nsmbw/thread/rhxii and there are no good arguments really in that statement.

wdym there are no good arguments in that statement?

"The community decided to ban emulators a long while ago." - That's not an argument "Emulators are unnoficial releases" - This is irrelevant, since when does this matter for any speedgame? It's literally the ROM of the exact same game, but played on an Emu, "unnoficial releases" are not some sort of modded boogeyman. "Loads are much faster and way too inaccurate than the Wii." - The boards would be separate from the wii and vc boards so them being faster is irrelevant, also inaccurate loads are equally present in the Wii version, they cut out loads for fast runs and dont for slower runs where load times are less important to the time. I don't see why this can't be done for Emu "Even though console loads are different, it's only a few seconds of difference on them whereas on emu it's way more because not everyone has a good PC" - see above, cut the loads out "On emulator it's too easy to cheat." - You can cheat anywhere, most games that have Emu boards don't have any kind of rampant cheating problem, it's not like Emulators make cheating utterly undetectable "YOU ๐Ÿ‘ DONT ๐Ÿ‘ NEED ๐Ÿ‘ A ๐Ÿ‘ LEADERBOARD ๐Ÿ‘ TO ๐Ÿ‘ RUN ๐Ÿ‘ SOMETHING " - You don't need your second Kidney either, would be pretty nice to have though. "the answer will remain the same. Emu is banned on the leaderboard and that's it." - unfounded absolutists statement

dawg If you just tryna get a Run Up on the Leaderboards, Just Buy it it aint that expensive, however i think the Most reasonable Argument for banning Emu is that its Not an official Release . Saying "other Games allow Emu" doesnt really Matter since it was a decision Made By the Community, thats basically it with all the good Arguments, i agree with you, making a 3rd subcategory Just Like physical and digital would be nice

Germany

I don't understand the fixation on "official-ness" of releases, its the literal exact same game, running on different hardware (like VC no less) not some third party bootleg clone or something.

What does that have to do with anything?

ngl @_abyss actually makes some pretty good counter arguments. I think making emu runs separate from physical and VC but still putting them on the boards would bring more popularity to the game and most likely wouldnโ€™t be an issue. iirc the main argument for emu being banned is that itโ€™s easier to cheat? Iโ€™m not sure how that works but iโ€™m sure someone with more dolphin/general TAS experience could give more insight. Also, โ€œjust buy the damn gameโ€ and โ€œit ainโ€™t that expensiveโ€ are not valid arguments at all lmfao

@_abyss so here's the problem, right? Dolphin is an emulator with TAS capabilities. Now because of this, if Dolphin were allowed on the main boards, someone could just whip up a suboptimal TAS, and try to pass it off as a real run. But that takes more effort than it's worth, and if it does happen, and a mod asks you if you can display gameplay at a similar level, and you can't do it, then you've already failed at cheating. Literally just make the effort to get a copy of the game and learn how to run it normally, it really doesn't take that much, and it's way better than cheating and trying to cover up the fact that you cheated. If you even try to cheat, the mods will immediately know that something's fishy.

@Volza yeah, because Dolphin has TAS capabilities, it's easy enough to just whip up the equivalent of a 24:xx or 25:xx run without too too much effort, but it's still tedious and time consuming. That's a pretty big issue imo

Seeing as runs on any system can be cheated wouldn't Dolphin's TAS capabilities just be something that would argue against emu being with console. It gives a higher chance yes, but if the issue is that someone could cheat it wouldn't affect the other boards and if it's not a record or high time then the person basically just wasted their own time right? Not advocating for cheating but if they aren't caught and it isn't a great time isn't it not that huge of a deal on it's own category?

To avoid thge cheating problem, you can generaly just record full-screen of dolphin with the borders data showing whether it is a movie playing or it is an RTA game Also, a lot of problems may just come from differences betwen emulators that can be fixed allowing only 1 of them, which wouldn't be a problem because anyone can get any emulator; make it dolphin exclusive for example (after all dolphin is the one wii emulator known of all times)

Btw the kidney example was odd lol, but i agree that "you dont need a leaderboard to run it" doesnt make a lot of sense as implies the same on every leaderboard on this site: we need a further explanation on what makes unnecesary the leaderboard over other leaderboards like the existing ones of this very game. If "leaderboards are not necesary" you might as well the entirety of this game from SRC lol, "not like it is needed to speedrun anyways"

@_abyss my Point was with " Buy the game" to Figure Out If you Just dont wanna Buy the game or If you actually found Something Worth debating

Germany

And if I just didn't wanna buy the game, would that make my points null and void?

It's like 20$ - 30$ used. You can find it cheaper then that as well

I agree on Volza that you can't just go and say โ€œjust buy the damn gameโ€ and โ€œit ainโ€™t that expensiveโ€ as arguments lol, that is directly attacking the financial situation of each individual outside of the gaming comunity Even if it isnt like "that much money" in this case, if they have alredy a way to play it in emulator and are used to it, you can't just force people to throw on their money to be accepted while denying emulators arguments because "they aren't needed anyways, just buy it" And well you can also argue for that one classic 14 years old user that straight up doesn't get any money yet (no job or anything) anbd might have more difficulties to get it past (you need your parents to get it for you)

@_abyss No, your Points are still valid, i was Just tryna Figure Out which of those 2 scenarios are true but you still havent answered the question

Germany

No, I don't want to buy a 14 year old game for a console I don't own to play and get a worse experience than what an emulator would give me, is that satisfactory to your inquiry? Really this isn't about me at all I never really expressed the desire to upload a run to the boards, I just think the separation between an ""official"" src board and an ""unofficial"" spreadsheet leaderboard that might just as well be part of src is stupid and the argumentation for it backwards and insufficient.

the game might be 20-30$ but you are forgetting that the potential runnner might not even have a wii which adds lets say 70$ to the money to spend and if they want a decent recording quality (aka no camera pointing at tv) theyll have to get a composite capture card and lets take the classic gv-usb2 as an example and add another 60$ and then depending on where you live lets say finland youll need to add shipping 30$ to that and then customs 24% of the 60$ which would be 14.4$ so in total to run and record with decent quality you need 194.4$ (assuming you have a pc already) if you lived in finland like in this example. now if you are american you can take off the 14.4 customs and lower the shipping to below 10 probably but thats still alot of money to be able to have your run on an "official" (src) leaderboard
