I'm tying to start at NSMBW speed running and was wondering If anyone had any tips! Thanks!

Hey ! You should join the discord and look to the #Ressources.

But I don't really have any tips, learn the route, practice and when you learned the route and practiced the levels you can start to do some runs. But I'd advice to not go for 556 in 5-T and Bombless in 8-A those are complicated tricks that you should learn at least when you get a sub 25:30.

Welcome to the community though, Enjoy and Good Luck on Future runs !

Yeah, as he said, I'd highly recommend joining the discord. I'd like to think we're fairly helpful people. Two general tips I have would be to focus on not dying rather than doing fast strats and to practice later levels just as much as levels at the beginning.

Hey man. Idk what kind of running you’re gonna do, but I’ve just been attempting 1-1 any% just because it’s an easy way to get good at the game and practice for when I eventually do full game runs. I’m not very good at giving advice, but here’s some motivation: This was my first ever time speedrunning anything, and after only 2 days of screwing around, I got a top 10 record. A couple days later, 8th place, days after that, 6th. You need to constantly try to improve yourself and work on past mistakes. Now, in singular level running, deaths don’t really do anything other than frustrate the heck out of you because you have to restart your save file; so yes, try to avoid those. But the thing with individual levels, since death doesn’t really matter, you SHOULD ALWAYS be trying to improve your speed and try to find the fastest routes. It might be very discouraging to see the world record and how fast they’re going (trust me, I know how that feels) but I’m the short amount of time I’ve been running this game, I’ve actually found some strats that actually improve upon the wr attempt. Don’t ever think you can’t do better, because there’s ALWAYS some way to be faster. Finally, be ready to get pissed, and I mean PISSED with a capital P. You WILL mess up. Always. And it gets INFURIATING over and over and over. Whatever you do, don’t stay angry, try to cool yourself off, because the angrier you get, the worse you will do. And if it gets to a point where you just can’t calm down, stop playing. It’s always better to come back calm and do good than get some extra runs in and do terribly. And if you’re doing a full game run, I’ve got terrible internet right now, so YouTube won’t load but search up how to speed run NSMBW and a video should show up that explains everything. Have fun running.

I'd like to correct a couple things. Firstly, ILs aren't exactly the way to go for practicing full-game runs because we don't use the penguin suit in any%. So going for a good IL time is very different from going for a good full-game time. Secondly, IL placement isn't anywhere close to full-game placement. I'd say a top 10 1-1 IL time would compare to about a 28:00ish any% time. I agree with the rest though. Keep working on improving, take breaks if needed, and believe in yourself. Also, like mentioned above, join our discord! We would very much love to help you there! Unfortunately we don't have any sort of official (full) "tutorial" but in the #recourses channel on the discord we have some bits and pieces of levels that are more difficult to learn, as well as a video showcasing many good beginner strats.

Wow, thank you all so much for the help. I have been getting better at 1-1 2 and 3 and I'm working on going faster in world 5. I will join the discord and maybe I'll get better in no time! Thank you!

Well when I said IL’s were good for practicing real game speed runs, I meant that they’re good for getting a feel for the game and learning to make fast inputs and decisions, and constantly try to become faster. I’m well aware that penguin suits aren’t allowed, but it’s really the technical parts that IL’s help with.

Penguin is allowed (as seen in cannonless and 100%), it's just slower in any%. But I see what you mean.
