Speedrunners have been aquiring specific versions of games to have the fastest experience since forever; I understand how that could put someone off from a competitive standpoint but it's something typically rooted into every community as the expectation as long as that version is official hardware (or equal to/slower than official in the case of emulation).

Sometimes you'll find PAL ports of games where it's been optimised to be equal speed to the NTSC release despite still being 50hz but that's not the case with HF or ST - these should be seen as simply bad ports in that regard. It's not a bad thing for NTSC to be faster because that's the original release of the game - it's just a conincidence that the PAL release was poorly optimised and slower because of it, usually that's not the sort of thing you'd consider a region split for - not to mention doing so would further segregate the already small community - it's worth considering but I feel like it's really difficult to justify.

Hitshee's idea provides a nice middleground to me however - since TurboSpeed is an official feature of the game, I think allowing PAL to utilise the TurboSpeed Unlock Code as a handicap of sorts to mitigate the slowdown incured by poor optimisation would work quite well to bridge the gap as long as the agreed upon star count for this new PAL rule doesn't go past the intended NTSC release default speed. It may not be a perfect solution as I'd expect stage transitions and text speed to remain the same but it does help bridge the gap and I think that's a really cool solution without upsetting leaderboard balance for NTSC - what is rightfully the intended speed of the game.

If a change like this happens I'd also like to see a seperate brand new category that allows everyone to use the TurboSpeed Unlock Code without restriction so we have people trying to beat the game at ridiculous speed levels - this situation is the only one I see making sense to region split since the upper levels of what's possible reach a cap.

Are we allowed to submit runs to this leaderboard for the most updated version of Alpha; Alpha 2 Gold? (also known as Zero 2 Alpha in Japan) I'm assuming yes but it isn't mentioned in the rules so I just wanted to be sure.

Why not simply create a seperate sub-tab for JPAL SD under the same single leaderboard you already have here for other region SD runs instead of an entirely new leaderboard with the exact same categories that you already have?

I bring this up because I feel like the way things are now alienates the JPAL community. I don't think that just playing a different region means you should be regulated to a Category Extension board. Having a seperate subtab instead wouldn't interfere with other region runs after all.

I found this game from PJ and klaige's AGDQ 2017 run of Any% Co-op but I noticed that category doesn't seem to exist here? Was interested to try this out with a friend in the future.

Text mashing in some form is going to be a big part of any RPG speedrun but you get desensitised to it after awhile so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's Undertale itself that interests you that's the main thing - I havn't run too many categories but I really enjoyed my time here while I was focused on it. If none of the main categories interest you there's also extras over at https://www.speedrun.com/undertalecategoryextensions

@Brock0903h Since you don't have any submitted runs yet does that mean you're a beginner? I would reccomend the old Kak Route for Any% just to get yourself aquainted with the game so you can find your feet and get comfortable with things. Some quick youtube searches of ''Any% Kak Route'' should let you find tuts and stuff.

@JookieTheLookie Nah reinstalling the game in that situation doesn't fix it, it'll just show the post-geno 10min blank wait screen when you open so it wouldn't be a true reset even if you waited it out.

As long as you've seperated your game from Steam as thepotato_666 described above all you need to do is delete the files in your appdata folder located at C:\Users*****\AppData\Local\UNDERTALE and re-open the seperated game.exe to have a clean slate. (Don't play from the Steam launcher)

Some quick corrections on JediJess' earlier post. Not all CRTs are made equal. HDCRTs for example are digital not analogue so those types will be plagued by the same issues modern LCDs are. Plasmas usually suffer from the same problem with some small exceptions.

Simply viewing something on an HDTV does not "make it look better" but rather it's all about how the content was designed to be watched and it just so happens that technology has evolved in a way that makes watching/playing standard definition content difficult to do without compromising on the experience in some way. There are many factors that can make a difference to this like the quality of the TV or monitor you use and the signal strength of the analogue cables - assuming the set you're using even supports the type of cable you're using to begin with. Those are just some examples too, the list goes on; some amount to subjective differences you may not care about while others are objective deteriments like increased input lag based on how the tv/monitor you decide to use processess the standard definition signal - these things arn't usually something you have to worry about in the digital age with modern content these days - it's just when consuming standard definition content where this all becomes a problem.

I could go on but It's going to be alot more efficent to direct you elsewhere rather than ranting here. So with that said, If you'd like to learn more I highly encourage to check out these videos from My Life In Gaming's YouTube channel, they have a wide variety of videos to help you learn about all things Retro Gaming.

The TL;DR is that with the right equipment you can have a lagless speedrun experience no matter what TV/Monitor you decide to play on but it's alot easier and more cost effective to do so on an SD CRT.

That's not how this works, if it's not on the list of approved emulators then it is banned. Just use a solution that follows the rules and you'll be fine, it's really not that hard.

The community discussion for deciding rulings on SRM and ACE and it's upcoming community vote is going on right now over on the OoT Discord. If you'd like to contribute and have your voice heard then I would recommend heading over there instead of voicing the opinions here. It's also the best place to learn the route yourself as Mutant mentioned earlier.

If literally anyone does anything against the rules that's for the mods to think about; not anyone else. I feel like derailing a forum thread with random "what if" scenarios just frustrates people.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with playing on VC or Emulator but that's a minority group in the scene as a whole which is going against the grain and because of that you shouldn't expect anyone else to take those platforms very seriously either.

The truth of the matter is that If you don't own an N64 for your SM64 runs then you arn't actually serious about it's speedrun community. I'm not trying to make fun of anyone by saying that, it's just how things are. The SM64 community has too much deep rooted history with the N64 to throw that way of thinking aside anytime soon and it's because of this that other platforms are treated as stepping stones until you're ready to change.

The last couple pages have been severly offtopic. Please try to keep your thoughts on point guys for everyone's sake otherwise there isn't any hope of people taking category suggestions like these seriously. That's just how it is.

@lostontheinternet To asnwer your question, races are something entirely different. They're typically no-reset enforced and the concept of "race categories" arn't exactly the kind of thing that exists in speedrunning. Any category CAN be raced but new categories arn't made specifically for that purpose.

Take OoT for example; some meme categories for that game allow you to skip the intro cutscene and still be able to submit to the leaderboards - and that's good for races - but that rule isn't there to make that category racable, it's just an inherant rule of the category when it was created.

As for 10x Canonless itself, it exists today simply because it always has since back when they had OG as the only method available to them. It was created as a joke, not for real consistency practice (because OG was all about luck).

I think the difference of opinion for why some people do and don't like the idea of 10x single star is that it goes against the idea of it being a meme and there are people that feel like there's no point submitting a leaderboard time if it's "just practice".

Whereas I (and it seems some others who have shared their thoughts here) feel like it's because I get to submit a time with my practice that it becomes useful because I'm able to guage my rate of progress better as I continue practicing. It's a wildly different way of thinking and I can see why it's seen in a weird way. I've heard some even say it's illogical. It's not how people generally do things - which is why I believe it's seen as "unnessessary".

Just because it's against the grain doesn't mean that way of thinking is wrong though; everyone is different and people practice in different ways. I just feel like if there's alot more than just myself that feels like it'd be a helpful category then it's worth the community's time to at least consider giving people that option because I can't see a single reason why allowing it would harm the community in some way.

Currently the closest thing to this is the Stage RTA google doc but it's only showing the fastest method of collecting a particular star once as a resources reference, it's not a leaderboard for the whole community's use in it's own right as a form of guaging improvement which is the big difference.

@dumpdome64 We understand you feel that way but the vast majority of posts on this thread so far indicate that there's a community interest for it. You can't deny that.

And yes,10x Canonless may have started out as a meme but now that there's so many more options than just OG method, the category has evolved for alot of people into a sort of challenge category as a way of training consistency.

I'd love to hear some of the mods thoughts on these ideas - it's good to present differnt viewpoints but just arguing about it is pointless to everyone; that's for the mods to decide not us.

A bunch of us on my stream have been kinnda half joking about the idea for the past few days. I'd grind the heck out of it too! :D Personally I can see this sort of things working really well for stages like Canonless with specific complexity and difficulty in the setup to justify it's inclusion as a sort of training-stage. (ie: Breezeless, Owlless, Log Skip, Pilliarless and LBLJ) Assuming mods enjoy the idea, a single new tab with sub categories to house these would be a nice fit imo.

Speaking as a mod for other games, I'd typically suggest this kind of thing in the IL Leaderboard for a game but I see the SM64 community tracks full levels in their IL's instead - which honestly answers alot of my inital confusion for why 10x Canonless existed as a cat extension in the first place.
