Recommended Capture Card for Each Piece of Hardware

Counterpoint (for most likely a bot post lmao): internet for people can be dodgy and feeds can cut out intermittently and capture direct on console maxes out at 1 hour, which gives 1 point back to capture cards since local recording would save a run with intermittent internet. On top of that, having a capture card allows people to actually show timer on screen through programs like OBS which can be an important thing for load removed times without having to play back the run a second time. Then there's the obvious issue of older consoles that don't have these capabilities and that's all I really need to say.

Made this thread cuz noone else has anything like it (and still noone has), not coming from a place of expertise but more just a general compilation of community thoughts/knowldge built on what people have sent through this thread/DMs. The only stuff I can truly talk about/reccomend from experience are HDMI and 3DS capture cards. This thread should be a good place to start for most people looking into capture cards however imo instead of starting from nothing (as discussed somewhere around page 2, 3 years ago). I do think the disclaimer contains enough warnings for people as well.

if someone else makes a thread with tons of research or something instead of something compiling community thoughts with minor checks, please feel free to pin it over this forum post, I'd love to see that happen.

This is a great and comprehensive guide for capturing footage from all kinds of systems, especially for those new to speedrunning or recording gameplay! One thing I’d like to add is that for systems like the PlayStation 3 or 4, using the built-in recording features can be a quick and easy alternative if you don’t want to mess with external capture cards, especially for runs that don’t require ultra-high quality. Also, for those recording handheld systems like the 3DS or DS, don’t forget that NTR CFW and Snickerstream can be super useful for wireless captures on newer models, but it’s important to check game compatibility and whether it’s allowed for the specific speedrun category you’re doing. Thanks for putting this together! Looking forward to seeing more capture tips in the future! Calculadora de Horas

TBF the "better option" became to upscale with some converter like a retrotink and using an HD capture card.

My capture card cost me 5 dollars. It's the most generic 1080p USB capture card, but the catch is that it has very low latency—enough that I can even play some games by looking at the preview screen. My Nvidia GPU does the encoding, though.

Does it have to be a video or can it also be a photo?

@Pigouni46 You have to check the rules for each game. Some allows without a video proof, most don't.
