Only SFX must be audible, you may mute the music and voices if that’s preferable. Apologies for the late response!
Most gadgets can be stacked together to make them stronger, which includes quick charges. In this specific case the difference is pretty insignificant so it’s not really worth doing, because it already charges very fast.
It’s written in the rules that modifications of any kind are not allowed. Check ‘Game Rules’ to see the rules that apply across all categories.
Until further notice the rule has been reverted and cups will be expected to be played in order going forward, it turns out there are more advantages to allowing that style of play than initially anticipated after watching a far larger quantity of submissions. This sudden change will not impact remaining runs currently in the queue.
It turns out we’re still super indecisive. So with that being said, if enough people dislike the rule we can change it back. You guys decide.
Ideally we get this sorted out as soon as possible, so please respond when you see this with your thoughts.
Context: All Cups speedruns - should we allow the cups to be played in order (Donpa > Secret), or should the runner have the freedom to choose the order?
Honestly no not really, other than the fact that it's been the standard for the past three Sonic racing games. It was basically the only rule we were particularly indecisive about. Two of us were on board with the idea of allowing any order, with the other being hesitant but not completely against it. We were basically just waiting to see if anyone would bring it up before actually changing it. It is now gone.
All speed classes (including mirror) will be merged into one, with Super Sonic speed being separate. If you’re only comfortable with playing on the lower speeds you can still participate, but you’ll be at a disadvantage.
There aren’t any meaningful differences that warrant them all being separate categories, so we are drawing the line at that, at least at this time. This is how most racing game communities do things from my experience.
@alumni As said in the post itself, the announcement was unexpected. It is literally not our fault that it came out of nowhere, but I fully agree that it is not ideal. As for a place to post PBs, they will go into the same channel as time trials currently do as we already have it separated into two for both speed classes.
@Valorr I don’t really want to try pick apart his response (I agree it was poorly worded but I do think he was being a tiny bit sarcastic) but I’m 99% sure he was referring to time trials, as all three of us (the mods) have already held world records within that mode in this game. At this time none of us have attempted a full game speedrun, but others have within our discord server which has provided valuable feedback on top of what we’ve also looked into and discussed.
To be transparent, the rules and categories are about ~90% complete, but the additional time will definitely give us that extra room to iron things out. However if they opened when initially expected to there would be virtually no problems. They are in an acceptable state right now (though obviously things are subject to change later down the line), we just don’t think we’ll have the time to meet the demand of submissions immediately. If you want to consider that lazy or selfish then fair enough I guess, I mainly suggested the idea of the delay because I was looking out for the other mods who admittedly did want more time (primarily due to external life reasons). If it was solely my decision the embargo would’ve been a lot shorter, but we came to this decision as a compromise and believe once the event concludes we will be ready to go.
Personally, I am very eager to begin reviewing runs, but even I don’t want to be stuck dealing with the overwhelming majority of submissions during that period while the other mods are busy, as I am under the assumption we’ll be bombarded with them. An All Grand Prix speedrun is well over 90 minutes even on Super Sonic Speed, so please understand that is a tall order for mostly one person to sit through. I would feel guilty for essentially ignoring them while trying to grind for the rewards in the event, I certainly could review a couple, but I think it would be easier and more fair if I just waited until we were all ready at the same time to maximise productivity.
Frustratingly, SEGA are pushing FOMO tactics, and we currently have no confirmation on whether the rewards (most importantly the gadget) will be available at a later date for those that missed it, so it is within our best interest to unlock it here and now and pray SEGA will be reasonable. This delay also gives us a good time to discuss the validity of these potentially limited timed exclusive gadgets to see if they should be allowed in speedruns.
What is happening now does not at all reflect on how future events will be handled, this honestly was unexpected and despite others wanting more time the leaderboards were going to open regardless. It is totally our fault to not have enough moderators ready for the launch, and we are currently in the process of hiring more moderators to help us out (more info in our discord server) to ensure we can be as efficient as possible in the future.
I was worried that this was how things would end up, and I am very sorry for the inconveniences this has caused. I hope this clears things up and we can all move past this.
No, as I said the timing was unfortunate. This event is only three days, so I really don’t think the delay is worth stressing over. As soon as it’s over things will proceed as intended, and we will be better prepared for future events (we also intend to hire more moderators).
For now there doesn’t appear to be any reason to ban any particular gadget outside of the limited time ones, but we will need to see how things play out. As for timing, even if you get it wrong or things change, they can be manually adjusted afterwards. It is likely that timing will begin as soon as you gain control in the first race, and then end as soon as the final race is complete. To ensure times can be adjusted if necessary, it is recommended that you begin the recording on the Grand Prix menu before entering the race. The only thing I would suggest avoiding doing for now is playing as Super Sonic, as we aren’t sure what to do with him.
I apologise for the inconvenience. Nothing is stopping you from completing runs in advance for when the leaderboards do open, though. If the event was any longer things would be different, but three days is not much time at all to grind for everything, and regardless of whether the leaderboards did open none of the moderators would be readily available to review runs due to it. The timing is just unfortunate and we didn’t anticipate/plan around this, things will be more streamlined by the time the next event rolls around.
Also, Festivals offer exclusive gadgets as rewards, which could potentially affect speedruns. For that reason alone we encourage people to give it a try even if reluctantly.
Yes, individual grand prix cups will be available. DLC cups will be added whenever they release.
Hi, after taking a second look it would in fact appear you were using LDM4 and I was incorrect with my judgement. For that I apologise and your run will be reviewed again shortly, I was very sleepy and the video quality made it difficult to tell.
If you can delete your resubmission that would be appreciated, I can reinstate the original.
Apparently, it’s approximately a 5.88% chance to get it in 8th place, and then the odds progressively decrease the higher your position. The distance between you and 7th place also matters, so if you are really far behind the odds will be much greater. The All-Star item also cannot appear in the item roulette until around 30 seconds has passed.
Done, I'll hold off adding All Missions until someone does a run for it. If I've missed anything please let me know!
Hi there, yes we are aware of the other versions and wanted to add them here but we were not sure on how different they were from each other and never got around to doing any testing besides noticing the character roster and course selection was a little different. We are not very knowledgeable on Java games you see. I'd be happy to add the categories right now.
Definitely think something like that would be far more interesting, however I would opt to change it from buying the most expensive thing in the store to unlocking the Blue License (50,000 SEGA Miles). This is because while the grind to buy Alex Kidd/Opa-Opa is slightly shorter, you would need to keep track of how many miles you have in the back of your mind for the whole run, and then be absolutely sure you have enough by the end and go buy them. Making a single miscalculation would basically kill the run. So by grinding for the Blue License you would not need to worry about anything because once achieved you’ll receive a notification about it, and that’s when the timer would end. In addition, because of the fact you would never need to exit gameplay, this completely circumvents the problem of loading times and keeps everything fair no matter the platform.
I am willing to make this a category and put it in the Category Extensions section, however for the category to be created there will need to be at three runs completed first, as that’s the requirement I’ve set for all other categories in the past.
I still think that people underestimate how boring this category will be lol
All Achievements has been talked about a lot, which has always perplexed me because the run would be a good 4-5 hours of actually playing the game, followed by about 2-3 hours of nothing but grinding for SEGA Miles until you reach the Gold License. It doesn’t sound fun at all and I don’t think people realise how monotonous it would be.
The category would likely need to use RTA timing (or realistically LTR but it would be so tedious to time and would take forever to do), which means that someone with a really fast PC could easily claim the record and keep it because they save too much time just on loading screens alone.
Assuming the lap skip glitch you are referring to is similar to the Highway Zero one you found the other day, are you implying you have got this trick to work on other courses too? If it is only possible on HZ then it would be pointless to make a new category for, but if it can be done on several courses, then it would make sense.
Also, given how unique this glitch is, I'm requesting that you create a guide/tutorial which thoroughly explains how the glitch works and how to pull it off. It may be possible humanly but if nobody knows how to do it then that defeats the point and nothing can be done with this.
Right click ASR in your Steam library > Properties > Local Files > Browse... > Open "settings.ini" with notepad > Edit "WINDOWED=0" to say "WINDOWED=1".
Additionally to change the resolution of the window (it cannot be stretched), edit "SCREEN_WIDTH=" and "SCREEN_HEIGHT=" to whatever works for you!
Upon watching your run it seems like it’s the latter, I tried playing ASR on my laptop about a year ago and it was always loading into levels that caused me the most trouble but once into the race it was usually bearable.
Maybe running the game in windowed and lowering the in-game graphics settings will help? As well as lowering the recording settings you use? That’s all I can offer though.
