0.- The Basic Rules

Cruis'n World is an arcade-racing game developed by Midway and was later ported to the N64 by Eurocom.

This leaderboard is focused on the N64 version of the game, and all the runs, as June 2 of 2017, use the NTSC version of the game. PAL runs at 83% speed, but the LB is focus 100% on IGT, RTA is a non factor.

What is the deal with this game? Well, it's fast, it's fun to play, and it's still developing new meta, with Multidrifting begin the more predominant technic in the game.

This are the basic things you will need to know to RUN this game:

--------Full Game Runs (NG)--------

-If you are doing a full game run, please reset your console everytime you are going to reset a run (unless you are resetting on the first level). It's for your own good.
(Fixes a bug, reset difficulty)

-They have to be done in a new game nothing unlocked. Using only power level 1 and the original cars. (In championship run, it's okay to use what you unlock, like PL2)

-This runs are IGT, but the tricks do NOT affect the time. 
We use the elapsed time shown before ending the race, and sum all the time to calculate the IGT of the run.

-You can use this page https://www.ingametime.com/ to help you calculate the time.

--------Individual Levels Runs (IL)--------
-If you are doing an unrestricted Level run, we expect most runs will be done with The Speed Demon and Power Level 5 (We have a guide posted here for the fastest way to unlock, this is something you can easily do in an afternoon). 
However, you are free to use anything you would like under the rules.

-If you are doing restricted, see guide 8 posted under guides.  

-Power Level 6 is NOT allowed. (Gameshark only)

-This runs uses IGT, tricks do not affect the time in practice mode.
However, if you use any other mode, beware that you should submit the elapsed time before tricks are applied (similar to NG).
Additionally, championship lap should be set to 3.

1.- Turbo Start (Beginner)

Turbo Start (TS) means that turbo you can get at the start of the race by doing the normal Mario Kart "Rocket Start".

In this game you are not restricted to the start, instead you can do it everytime you are in neutral gear.
(Manual transmission have an advantage in this sense)

Turbo Start = Neutral Gear + A + [Timing] R+A (Gear Up)

What timing? Well, on the rpm (The right-down corner) you need to get the bar to the orange part, and the change the gear up.

The fact that you only need to be on Neutral Gear to do the TS allow to do multiple turbos before the GO.
You only need to change the gears down to neutral and do the TS again.
AND yes, you can do a TS mid race, if you crash or lose Multidrift, just go to neutral and TS.

Why is it important to be able to do multilple TS before the GO? So you can be more consistant with them and be able to TS all the way thought a Full Cruis'n The World or Championship Run, and you dont need to restart the race or go start slow.

Additionally, you can cancel the wheelie animation, or any grounded "trick" animation (wheelie, side ways car, drifting) by releasing the acceletator.

2.- Turbo Start (Advanced)

You can get an advantage at the start of the level using what I've coined "perfect boosting." The trick involves setting off the boost exactly when the level starts. It saves about 1.5 seconds and is extremely good to use on dead runs or on opening stages and IL's

3.- Drifting - Introduction to Multidrifting

This game have a pretty complex drifting mechanic.

Drift = A + B + [Turn Direction]

Drifting save some speed by allowing more tight corners way better.

Now, here it comes the more interesting thing about drifting.
Your speed/acceleration goes UP the moment you START the drift, and it can go down to the normal speed mid drifting. I will call this speed "Drift Speed".

Drift Speed last about 2 to 3 seconds, after that you go down to normal speed. You can refresh the time of your Drift Speed by doing another Drift, this is called "MultiDrifting"

Multidrifting is the act of continuesly doing drifts to conserve your drift speed.

This is great becuase of Drift Speed Conservation.

Drift Speed Conservation: When you get a high speed by any mean (turbo/downhill), you can keep that extra speed by doing a drift and conserve it as long as the Drift Speed last.

So, the point is to continuesly doing drifting speed to conserve your TS speed. And if you lose your turbo speed, just use another turbo OR do a TS and conserve them.

Multidrifting for long periods of time can hurt your hands. It's highly recommended to pick up a soft stick n64 controller. 4.- Multidrifting - Drifting types

To achive Multidrifting, you need to drift multiples times, and each of them need to be pretty close together. To do this, you need a way to link the drifts. This are the ways (in the order I discovered) to drift in this game.


--------1.- Turn Drift--------
(Easy, Turns)

This is the original intended way to drift in this game. You drift before a turn, and take it Very Clean.
Avoid doing this drift for too long, since this just don't conserve speed. Move to the next ones.

--------2.- Autocanceled Drift [AD]--------
(Easy, depends of the road to work, Straight road)

This drift abuse the road to perform a drift, and the game canceling the drift for you. After the drift you are free to do another one and conserve the drifting speed (since you only need the beginning part).

Kenya championship is a road where you can easily AD.

AD = Drift. You don't even need to release the aceleration button.

--------3.- Snake Drift [Manual Drift]--------
(Hard, can be perfomed everywhere, Straight road) (This is kinda hard on your hands, just be careful if you have a hand condition)

This drift abuse the system way to check if you are able to do a drift. By turning you car to the left, you will be able to do a drift to the right. After the beginning of the drift, you will need to release A and re-ajust your car. (Cancel it manually)
(This can be done from right to left too)

You can conserve your Drifting Speed in almost all the tracks of this game if you dominate this trick.

The most prominent (and early) example of Snake Drifting is Italy Championship.

--------4.- Mid Drifting--------
(Dificulty vary from Medium to Real Hard, only way to conserve Drifting Speed in long turns)

This kind of drift is a child of both, Turn Drifting AND Snake Drifting, becuase you need to do a drift MID turn, cancel it, and do another one.

In most of Cruis'n The World tracks, it going to be pretty easy to do, since their turns are not that sharp. But on Championship is where the dificulty to do them goes up significanly.

Real Hard Mid Drifting: Kenya Championship have 2 pretty heavy Mid Drift that take a good time to dominate, but that is the only way to conserve your Drifting Speed for a whole lap.

Medium Mid Drifting: Italy Championship is pretty much Mid Drifting and Snake Drifting all the way.

5.- Expert Multidrifting - CAT

Car Avoidance Technique (CAT) 

========

It was discovered that momentum will tank if traffic is too close to the driver while multidrifting (an elongated motor sound will play that we are calling getting "catted"). Cating involves multidrifting in such a way as to keep space between traffic and the player. If done correctly, multidrifting speed can be substantially maintained and time saved on any level with traffic. Additionally, the catted effect appears to occur in other situations such as if the car makes collisions with walls and certain barriers.

6.- Emulator Setup

If you can only run this game on a emu, it's allowed under the following setup.

7.- How to Prepare for Unrestricted IL run submissions (Fastest way to unlock what you need)

Time Commitment: Roughly 5 hours 

Step 1: Championship Beginner run (Set to 1 lap) (Beat all stages- you just need to get top 3)
Step 2: Championship Pro run (Beat all stages)
Step 3: Championship Master Bonus run (Beat just the new stages)
Step 4: Spam Russia (All Champs) for about 3.5~ hours -- stop when you unlock Speed Demon
Step 5: Cruise the world run (any difficulty)

You should have Speed Demon (fastest car) and all of the courses. Access them all from the practice menu.

8.- Restricted vs Unrestricted IL Submissions Explained

Unrestricted is easy, do whatever you want. Push the limits of the game!

Restricted is a category that focuses on mimicking the full-game run experience. Accordingly, any track time you get in a full run CAN be submitted as a restricted IL.

More detailed version of the above:

Cruise the World (Restricted): An IL counts as “Restricted” if performed with a car available on a new file and without the use of any speed upgrades. Furthermore, training mode is banned (CPUS and traffic is required).

Championships (Restricted): An IL counts as “Restricted” if performed with a car available on a new file and without the use of any speed upgrades passed power level 2. Furthermore, training mode is banned (CPUS are required).

I want to briefly explain the thought process behind Championships (Restricted), the reason PL2 is allowed is because it is extremely easy to unlock in a run and almost the entire full-game run uses this upgrade. Further, it is possible to complete a run starting in NYC and doing Germany later, so Germany is not necessarily at a disadvantage being the first logical stage to complete.
