I use ntsc-j original console with a Japanese copy of sm64. Sorry; this question is probably asked a lot and has probably become redundant at this point. Regardless, I don't know when to start the timer. Pls help?
There's a little more to it than that. Unless going for top tier times or doing single stars/stage RTAs most people aren't too anal about retiming. That said, for timing by hand, you'll want to power on/off and start the timer at the flash that occurs about a second after powering on. If you're lazy you can start your timer at -1 second and power on and hit timer at the same time
As dumb as it sounds, if you use the reset button, the timing starts when the shutters appear (basically as you hit the button), so it's "faster" to use power switch over reset button. I agree that this sounds retarded, but it's how things are ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Perhaps Gothic or someone will pop in and clarify further
Honestly I don't know why its not at file select. It seems like if it is an outdated rule it should be changed. One thing is also SM64DS starts on file select
It's a Japanese timing standard and since the original runners of the game were the Japanese then the community followed. It is NOT going to change and ffs it's 8 seconds difference it's not a big deal. And honestly, for you to suggest the ruling should be changed when you don't even run the game is a fucking joke in itself, I'm afraid.
Would definitely be nicer if it was just file-select timing.
Can I ask why? Like this shit really gets to me lol, it is 8 seconds of your life to time correctly? It's also not gonna change. Like I honestly don't understand.
@GothicLogic For me anyways, FS is just easier because I have an easier time splitting and pressing A on the controller at the same time. Whereas with RS, I have to reach awkwardly to turn on the console and split at the same time. The other problem with RS is that sometimes my n64 sucks and when I turn it on it fails to actually turn on so I have to try again. Which makes things slightly inconvenient. It's not about the 8 seconds (I couldn't care less about that) it's merely for convenience's sake In all honesty though, it is not much of a bother. It may cause some microscopic amounts of hassle, but it's really not that big of a deal when we start the goddamn timer lol. Just saying that FS timing WOULD be easier. Albeit only a little.
Love you Gothic btw. Good luck with the 1:44 :P
You don't split as soon as you turn on the console though, there's about one second when you flick the switch before you start the timer. Personally I just think that it's silly to not start from power on no matter what. Thanks though.
I just filmed a run of mine that started from file select. If I submit this will be it be declined? I'd be fine with adding time to it but I'm just curious if I have to throw it away.
start the timer when u turn on the console is absolutely stupid , we need change that rule
hey guys i don't really play sm64 at all but i think that we should allow wii u vc for single star because it's official hardware
thanks!
I've been trying to find a real answer to why runs start on reset/power-on for a while. It's clear now that there is no real reason behind it. Tradition is probably the worst reason as well.
I'll always start my time from file select, and if anyone cares enough, they can just tack on the few seconds if they're that anal about it.
Set your livesplit timer offset to -1.00 and start it when you push the reset button
We would like to announce that VC and EMU subcategories are now active on the Stage RTA leaderboards (under "Levels"). Stage RTA involves collecting all the stars in a given stage including the 100 coin star. Timing starts on star select and ends upon collecting the final star. You are allowed to us
