White Day (2017) Speedrun Technique/Efficiencies Collection

[WORK IN PROGRESS]

A collection & guide to all techniques that are currently used in speedruns for White Day (2017). The purpose of this guide is to collect all of the various techniques runners are using so that other runners can use them and newer runners can complete competitive runs faster. This guide is focused on PC running but the techniques can be translated for use on Console. All Techniques in this guide were created by various runners, none of which are myself. Thank you to those runners for moving the tech in this game forward.

General Techniques

Fast Dialogue Selection

  • Objective: Make dialogue selection faster and more reliable during runs
  • Basic Concept: As in most games, dialogue can be selected quicker with keyboard than using a mouse. By using the 'Left' & 'Right' buttons in the game, you can select the dialogue as soon as it appears on the screen, avoiding lengthy audio clips and reducing run time. Coupled with spamming the 'Skip' [Back] key, it can reduce dialogue time significantly from a vanilla run.
  • Technique: By using a M&KB AND a Controller in tandem runners can continue to use the strategy above while substituting the 'Left' & 'Right' keyboard buttons with the Controllers shoulder buttons (L1 & R1). Unlike with the keyboard controls, the controllers input LINGERS within the engine and will automatically trigger the dialogue option selected once it is available to be selected. Coupled with spamming the 'Skip' [Back] key, it can make your dialogue selections efficient and less straining physically
When making dialogue selections with KB&M, you would have to spam the key that corresponds to the dialogue option you want to select, then spam the 'Back' key, and repeat until the scene is over.
 
When using a KB&M + CONTROLLER, you only need to hold down the shoulder button that corresponds to the dialogue option you want to select, then spam the 'Back' key, repeating until the scene is over.
  • Result: Minimal time loss due to slow dialogue selection & reduction in physical strain

Fast Item Pickup

  • Objective: Make item pickup as fast as possible

  • Basic Concept: When picking up an item, the game brings you to the menu and requires you to manually exiting it using a button, slowing the momentum of your run.

  • Technique: Exiting the menu after an item pickup can happen WITHOUT THE MENU EVER APPEARING. This happens by hitting the buttons used for exiting the menu (RMB or 'Back') immediately after clicking on an item. WARNING: This technique can be tricky, especially since pressing RMB before picking up an item brings up the pause menu, which I BELIEVE does not affect IGT but does break momentum.

  • Result: Save fractions of a second during EVERY item pickup


Specific Location/Action Techniques

Main Building 1

LOOK DOWN - AKA Pre-Tree Quick Key

  • Objective: Get the MAIN BUILDING 1 KEY faster
  • Technique: When you meet So-young at room 2-8, your viewpoint will be saved and remain after the cutscene and dialogue finishes. By pointing your view at your FEET, far enough down to see PART OF HEE-MIN's FIST DURING THE RUNNING ANIMATION, you can pick up the key after the cutscene instantly and start to turn around before the fade from black finishes. Please Note: The game will still take away your control and show the spot where the key previously sat on the floor.
  • Result: ~1-1.5 Second Time Save

Specific Run Techniques

Game Over Skip

  • Objective: Save several seconds by activating a glitch that speeds up the 'Game Over' screen
  • Technique: Spam the ESC key just before and while Hee-Min falls to the ground once being kicked. This glitch happens at random. (Runner lyingfigure believes the probability of this glitch is affected by both whether the player is using a Controller AND M&KB (Decreased odds of glitch happening) and how quickly the player can spam the ESC key (Quicker = Glitch happens more often). All top runs in this category utilize this glitch, making this technique (and subsequent RNG) mandatory for a top run.
  • Result: ~2-3 Second Time Save

Seong-A Animation RNG

  • Objective: Reduce run time through Seong-A RNG
  • Technique: When Clicking on [Flirting with] Seong-A's lower body, she has 2 animations which can follow: one where she crosses her arms and stays in place, and one where she stomps her foot, punches her arms downwards, and takes a few steps forward. All top runs in this category have 2 OR MORE instances of this 'stomp & walk' animation, making good RNG basically required for a top run.
  • Result: ~2-3 Second Time Save
