Hey y'all,

I use the real Sega Genesis cartridge in the Analogue MegaSG (an FPGA device). When I submitted my first time I selected real hardware and the mods placed a comment questioning how it should be handled in the future. Rightfully so, it's a complicated topic.

Was there a decision made on if Real Hardware or Emulation should be selected if an FPGA console was used? I want to make sure I'm properly categorizing my runs.

Hey ! My humble two cents as a non-moderator :

• Even if an FPGA implementation can always be prone to imperfections, it is still, by design, much closer to real hardware than it is to software emulation.

• Also, I think it is in our best interest not to distinguish FPGA implementation from real hardware, because otherwise this would also raise the same kind of question for the reverse use case : real console + FPGA implementation of Virtua Racing on a flashcart (e.g. Mega Everdrive Pro).

If there was any actual event of an implementation flaw (console FPGA or Virtua Racing FPGA) having a crucial impact on a runner's performance, we could always revise our point of view and moderators could always create a new "FPGA" entry for the Emulation field (I guess it could be applicable for any combination of console and Virtua Racing FPGA), but in absence of such case, I don't see any reason to make things unnecessarily complicated.

Hopefully other people will notice this thread and continue discussing this :-)

Thank you, this is certainly how I want to approach things for the time being. I feel there's obviously big differences in trying to be a cart versus trying to be an entire console when it comes to complexity. I have seen some concerns being raised in other groups about accuracy concerns. Especially when it comes to Saturn FPGA cores, but I would imagine that it is only a matter of time before that will be solved. They've come a long way. I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm and I hope that as always, if something did come up it can be discussed and addressed.
