tl;dr - it is faster to soft reset after finishing a map and saving than to watch the flashing cutscene.

more - after you defeat DK on the last level of a map, you're prompted to save, then the map flashes for a few seconds, then the new map appears. Originally suggested by whatisevenanything, it appeared to be faster to reset after saving rather than watching (he thought it had to be a hard reset, and thought it would be emu only).

See:

I considered soft reset, and decided to test it on both GBi and SGB2. Turns out, it's faster on both.

See:

How much faster? Approximately 2 seconds faster on emu and GBi, and approximately 1 second faster on SGB2 (due to the SGB enhancement packets causing lag). This is for every map transition, so it adds up over the course of an entire run to a decent amount of time save.

This is not a major glitch, it is good to use.

Hi.

I contacted the developer of bgb prior to posting that comment. I asked:

"do the "SGB + GBC" and "GBC + initial SGB border" emulated systems both emulate the packets that are sent in a Super Game Boy enhanced game (which cause frames of lag)?"

The response was:

"SGB + GBC emulates a system that does not exist, so it may produce undefined behavior (depending on the game)

initial SGB border emulates a SGB until a border is sent (or until a timeout), then it restarts in GBC mode (without SGB emulation) but keeps showing the border."

So, it shouldn't actually be emulating the SGB after the border is sent. If there any sort of lag or delay, it is because it is being ran as the GBC. If you have more specific questions, I'd suggest contacting the developer of bgb (as I did), since I can't answer anything further. Info on how to is here: http://bgb.bircd.org/#email

Now, I think the most ideal system selection in bgb is "Gameboy." I made that comment initially because it seems that a lot of people really care about the SGB border. I'll go ahead and remove my comment, since it's pretty unclear right now.

Another glitch that could save time is the bubble glitch in Wario's Castle. However, it's only been done by TAS as far as I know (I've attempted it RTA, but never successfully).

Such a route exists (for a TAS). For it to actually be faster than the normal Any% Glitchless route, it would require a number of frame perfect tricks, including ones that runners generally do not practice. Basically, it won't happen, and it would probably be slower in the end due to the runner having to attempt the tricks numerous times.

The run will be removed when a new WR is submitted.

Simply put: it's a marathon for the heroes who speedrun handheld games.

"But what is a handheld game exactly?"

Well, we're looking at consoles that meet both of the following definitions: they are designed to be strictly portable, and they are designed for gaming. This includes consoles like the Gameboy, Nintendo DS, PSP, Game Gear, etc. This does not include consoles like the Switch nor any phone apps.

Handheld speedrunning is fairly underrepresented, and we want to bring light not only to those speedrunners willing to put in the time and effort to run the games, but the games themselves in the hope that more speedrunners will want to learn and run the games.

The marathon will be streamed live on http://twitch.tv/speedgaming from July 12-14, 2019.
