So I read the new update, and as many already know I heavily disagree with it. I'm gonna address a few points.
First off, I will quote the sticky: "PS1 emulators is where most (if not all) the controversy comes from. As FDS is allowed for PS1 games ran on a PS2, it has been noted that "Emu is always going to be slower than console". However, the whole aim of the emulator is to be accurate to the console that the games were originally meant to be run on, which is the PS1."
I am in the camp that thinks all emus should be allowed since a PS2 with FDS will always be faster than any emulator anyways, and I find faults in the idea that emulators should be compared to a playstation 1. First problem is that nobody runs on playstation 1, and our goals for making comparisons between the emulator and console are to measure the strength of players and strength of times on the emus or consoles people choose to use, and the console people choose to use is PS2 with FDS, not the PS1, so it doesnt make any sense to me to compare the speedruns on a PS1 emulator to a PS1 console instead of a PS2.
That's the first issue, but suppose the only concern some people have is that "the whole aim of the emulator is to be accurate to the console that the games were originally meant to be run on" which i'm aware is how some people think, but i feel this idea is flawed
Because by this logic, PS2 with FDS turned on should be banned, because load times are not accurate to the console the ps1 games are originally meant to be run on.
The emulator in particular I would like to have unbanned is PSXFin, which is only innacurate in that it has load times faster than ps2, but it is slower in loads than a ps2 with fds, and therefore there is no grounds for banning it in my opinion.
I'm quite opinionated on this, I feel as though there's literally nothing accomplished by banning emus, particularly psx fin, other than widening the gap between legal emus and legal consoles and removing the easiest ps1 emulator on the internet for beginners to download. please give me any additional thoughts or comments on this, and also, please do not respond with "Well you can still run on emu, we just won't accept your runs on the leaderboard," because that's like saying you can still break the law, you'll just get arrested for it. It also doesn't even address the issue at hand.
finally:
"If your run uses an emulator not listed here then it will not be accepted. No WR is currently set on a banned emulator, and therefore is not a cause for concern. Again, please open a new thread if you would like to discuss this."
for shits and giggles i'd like to point out that I have the crash 3 105% ng+ world record on PSXFin, a banned emulator.
i could bring edh and modern. also have packs of return to ravnica and conspiracy and a few others. i could bring if people were down for a draft.
my flight gets in at 6:20 pm in chicago on the 18th
So I have always struggled with not having the ability to pause runs, such that it severely limits the time I have to do runs due to the expectation of interruptions at certain hours, as well as having anxiety. All I request is that we make a rule change to allow at least one free untimed pause, but with as many restrictions as others may feel necessary such as limiting number of pauses, or requiring the entire run with a pause be streamed not just recorded.
I only want an option available in case me or other runners need it and to put myself and other runners at ease with peace of mind knowing that they can finish valid runs even if they are interrupted in the middle of it.
I'm only concerned with adding this to the 105% category since it's the main category I run and it's over 2 hours long but the door is open to implementing it in any other categories for crash games people want.
i think im gonna buy plane tickets. they havent spiked to high prices yet i hope.
im cheap and willing to sleep in awful conditions at nasa to save money. id love to hear any cheapskate plans if anyone has other good recommendations.
crash 3 105% - 2:20
i plan on not booking a room and sleeping in the stream room and maybe paying someone like 20$ or so to stash my stuff in their room and using their showers. Is this good plan?
It is also the fact that this isn't a rule being established it is a rule being changed, and for little reason. There have been no problems with any runner using any innaccuracies to help them run the game. And suppose the burden of proof doesn't lie on the moderators to prove emulators are innaccurate, it most certainly is their burden of proof whenever there is a rule change (compared to establishing these rules at the start). and you have no proof that innacuracies in psx fin can provide advantages during gameplay, only theiries. and so this rule change is absurd.
Tell me, do you think the burden of proof lies on me or other emulator users to show that the emulators we use are not innaccurate to the point where we can abuse any out-of-bounds or manipulate hitboxes or rng? Or do you think it lies on you, the moderators, to prove that you indeed can abuse any out-of-bounds or manipulate hitboxes or rng? Because I think this is the basic issue we disagree upon.
i was merely trying to get the point across that no matter what, emulator is slower than ps2
I have issues with this.
I run all ps1 games on psx fin and I would prefer to continue doing spyro runs on that emu. I interpret the justification you have for allowing other emus a bit differently. While you say you cannot allow it because you are not sure of it's innacuracy, I would think there should instead be no ban on emus with no certainty that it is innaccurate. As for psx fin, I have used this emulator to run Spyro 1 120% in the past, and would like to continue using it. If emulator is not faster than console, then what is the point of banning it? Anybody who wants World Records in these games has to play it on PS2 because of the faster load times on it. psx fin is also one of the easiest emulators to download and makes it even easier for new runners to get into the series. Also the innaccuracies claimed to be had with these emulators are minor, and in almost all cases have no significant impact on gameplay. By banning more emus, all you are doing is preventing runners from using easy to download options like psx fin and you are preventing zero people from abusing inaccuracies in these emus to their advantage in rta runs.
You don't discriminate against emulator runners right? I was hoping that submitting runs i do on emulator won't hurt me. Because i can easily arrange to play on console at the event (i own a console, but no capture card).
i kinda agree with what kirbymastah was saying. The text seemed way too small and the pertinent info (game name, runner, category, and estimate) should be big n bright. the only other minor thing was the gradient covering the edges of the couch feed. I don't think it ever looks good to have any graphics cover up the game feed or the couch/webcam feed.
The layouts for the most part I think are really good. The colors used worked well. I think a place to have scrolling text/info would be really good to have so we can show on stream all kinds of information about things not super important to the run (AGDQ has this and it works decently) in a small amount of space.
Oh, and we also need a layout to use in between games.
I could help out with stream layouts. I would be a decent candidate for the role as I am currently studying multimedia.
I would also offer to help with judging the games but I wouldn't really be able to do that since I have plans of sending in my own game submissions.
Game Name: Crash Bandicoot: Warped System: Emulator (PSX Fin) Category: Any% (No Item Glitch) Gameplay Estimate: 0:55 Ending/Bonus Estimate: 0:10 Donation Incentives: Spyro the Dragon demo Sample run video:
Description: This is a short and relatively consistant category, and breezes through all the games levels. There are many small and impressive looking timesaving strats throughout the entire run, as well as very interesting and unintended movement tech.
Game Name: Crash Bandicoot: Warped System: Emulator (PSX Fin) Category: 105% Gameplay Estimate: 2:30 Ending/Bonus estimate: 0:10 Donation Incentives: Spyro the Dragon demo Sample run video: http://www.speedrun.com/run/emk54x1m if that doesn't work, then I suppose this: http://www.hitbox.tv/video/836958/
Description: My main category and one that has yet to shine in a big marathon. This run was only really done in a marathon during ESA 2015 by MartinForslund on the second stream. This category is a crazy display of skill and requires consistancy to do well in. This the Crash game that introduced time trial relics, which are normaally obtained on revisits, but with a dozen or so really tight and difficult one cycles (collecting gems and relics in one go), you can save tons of time, and they are sure to impress. A few new extremely tight one cycles have been proven to be possible in this game in the last few months to save 2 minutes, and deserve to be shown off in a good marathon run.
Just want to stress that i'd really much prefer to do a run of 105% than any%.
Thanks that cleared a lot of things up. I definitely agree that allowing early exit strats, and probably wormholes, would be bad for the 100% category.
Was also curious if all peak race had to be done RTA. If it uses the in game timer than I would argue you should be allowed to pause, only maybe once or twice in the run (although enabling pause buffering strats would be bad). Just to make it friendly for people to run, but it's a short category. I am not so opinionated on this idea but I thought it was worth bringing up.
And does 100%/snowflake/big challenge end on collecting the last item you need? People might split after collecting the last item they think they need so then they check their stats and realize they are not finished but they stopped their timer.
Hey I just wanted to post here because I'm in the midst of learning to speedrun this game and it sounds like many rules clarifications and changes are happening right now, and a few things concern me:
I don't agree with the banning of the select warp rule because that makes it far too ambiguous and hard to enforce. If you wipe out, you automatically select warp. and sometimes that can be an advantage for you because you can just so happen to warp ahead. Unless we can make the rule more defined by saying 'no pressing select' for instance, then you have none of this ambiguity. Still, banning select warps i think is also silly because you can have peoples runs become invalidated instantly mid run by one dumb select warp, even by accident.
I'm 99% sure All Mountain 100% is all big challenges, collectibles, gold medals, rival challenges, and career highlights, as is defined by the checkboxes in the transport menu. Buying things in the lodge isn't required for 100% (but buying stats might be recommended)
Speaking of which, 425 snowflakes (and i assume all big challenges) all have the same rules. you can and should level up stats as long as you dont collect a single item.
All Peak Race (clean)??? have no idea what makes it clean other than no intentional select warps. I personally will be choosing to run this category using select warps or whatever category it would be (all peak race with select warps?)
Lastly, how should we start/stop timing in each category? it doesn't matter to me what is decided on but as long as we figure out a distict action to use to make start/stop times and leaderboard times universal.
Appreciate if people get back to me on my thoughts
Thanks
