Just submitted a 1:06.02 retimed, and the timing I used in this run complies with how revenant timed his run (time starts when meteorite hits the water, ends when the fade-in to the final screen ends). Honestly if this also doesn't end up being faster, I'll be so clueless.

A similar thing has been done in a different RPG Maker game, called Ib. We tested a bunch of languages and concluded that Chinese is by far the fastest language to run. In this case, it'll require some testing, but I'm going to predict that the languages you listed are slower than English, since their wording in sentences tend to be as long as English structure, or faster, in general.

There is no need in applying for moderator as there will presumably be a low level of activity, and I'm very active on this site.

skip dialogue with period key. judging by the run you submitted you had subtitles on.

Additionally, all runs don't have to be in emulator, though playing in ScummVM may serve as a bit of an advantage due to predictable and potentially faster loading times, and being more compatible with all Windows versions.

The CD-ROM games are typically hard to acquire, so many of the Humongous Entertainment games were ported to steam running in the ScummVM emulator.

Alright, then for now I won't add them since not many people run this game in general. If anyone wants to do research on what language is fastest then go ahead, that'll give the mods a better reason to add the languages.

Sounds good as long as we know there's a clear difference between the languages. Have you done any testing on this matter yourself? Otherwise, sounds good, I can add all of the languages available on the Steam release.

I was thinking about this when I did runs but I already knew that hard mode was the fastest to use in runs. Overall, I’m down for that change, but the final decision is up to @guywith

I use VisualBoyAdvance, though Gambatte is probably the easiest and most preferred way of emulating GB/GBC games.

I feel like this would be a good category since the wall clips start to get more dull as more runs are done. The addition of an "Any% No Wall Clips" category would be a great idea, just because beating the game properly without cheesing your way through it sounds more fun, and I am assuming that Any% would get dull due to all the wall clips.

Let me know if it sounds like a good idea!

Hey there, I would just like to let the mods know that there is a PC version of this game which is vastly different from the GBC version. Just so runners don't get confused, I would specify that this speedrun.com page has a GBC label next to the name, like this: Elmo in Grouchland (GBC)

In case somebody wanted to add the PC version of this game to speedrun.com, this way there would be no confusion.

Thank you!

The Chinese version is faster compared to the English versions due to faster text scrolling throughout most of the game. The paintings with the names you have to enter are also a big part that separates the two versions. The first painting you have to enter in the Chinese version is faster, because it doesn't require having to reroute and reading the sign on the wall, which is required in the English version. The second painting is slower in the Chinese version, however, because it requires you to enter the name of the painting, character by character, while the English version gives you a choice of three different names. Also, the Chinese version requires you to talk to the ant in the green room to pull off the ant painting, which costs about two seconds compared to the English version, where you can go right up to the painting and pull it off. Still, the Chinese version is faster than the English version, and is so far the fastest language to run in this game. However, I've been theorizing that the 1.02 version of the Korean translation of Ib may be faster than the Chinese version; who knows though, the version has not been found yet.

While testing out some path select combinations in the debug mode, @SubmarineCpt and I found out that having the History Report in the Old West is faster than having the Calculator in the Old West, since you have to get the keys, then you have to go through the cutscene where you have to select the key to open the chest. Then, you have to click the chest once you click the correct key, which has a cutscene that can be partially skipped; you can see this in a typical Any% route that has the Calculator in Old West. Since the Calculator couldn't be placed in the Old West anymore, we decided to put it in Dinoland, since with good RNG it could be fast as well. Submarine and I decided to make these changes because we have been doing some Any% Random Seed races for the past day, getting close to seeing every single combination that this game can offer.

Overall, this new route saves time over the typical Any% route because History Report in Old West is much faster than getting the Calculator instead. Also, if given good RNG, the Calculator in Dinoland can save time over getting the Calculator in the Old West. Mainly, the overall time saved not having to get the keys in Gold River, and opening the chest in Hubcap HIll. Instead, we take the wire cutters in the Rock Mine, and save Virgil Clyde in Hubcap Hill, then going to the General Store, and taking the History Report on the window. The save file, for non steam only, will be provided in the Resources tab for this speedrun.com page.
