This is kind of a dead thread because I never read things but in case you're still interested read this: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U-lFVpDHuoW3AeQvm2SojPWsFT68TuSawmC5ulNx5qE/edit It was written for a specific segmented project so certain things like enabling autojump may be irrelevant; the section you'll want to make note of is "correctly recording demos."

Notably, I specifically advise against using the speedrun_demorecord plugin for segmented runs because it makes it annoying to control which demos you want to keep and which demos you want rid of. Also, the plugin itself is pretty horribly broken and has weird effects on the game in some cases for reasons nobody is sure of. The only reason I reckon it's still used in RTA is because nobody has made anything better.

And definitely don't follow max's advice of closing the entire game whenever you get a segment, because that's insane. Just copy the recorded demo to a new meaningful name. The "naming demos" section of that document provides a reasonable way of doing that, but of course you might choose to organise your demos in any way you want.

The only preserved copies of old versions of HL2 and Portal are for Windows, so you're gonna have to use Wine. Last I checked (years ago) it already worked pretty well, although I've never tried it on Mac. You might have an easier time installing PlayOnMac or WineBottler or whatever.

You should be able to Google that stuff but lemme know if you need more help.

The nice speed display is part of Ghosting Mod, and IIRC it shows horizontal speed rather than overall speed, so it's more useful. Only works for HL2 though.

Edit: also, don't worry about optimising bunnyhopping too much in glitchless because you'll basically only gain speed between jumps and then get capped again (not really because glitchless doesn't exist but that's a whole other thing)

Hi I'm a bit late but I'd like to correct a couple of things. First of all, Source Unpack (build 5135) isn't the oldest version; it is in fact the latest version released before the SteamPipe update in 2013 or so which did weird things to save glitches and also made load times horrible.

Next, 3420 is indeed an older version but I've not seen anyone using it for OoB runs yet, not counting Icy's "no passing through portals" runs. In theory it makes it possible to save time in 02 but it has a couple of downsides like horrible FOV and no radios (although the latter only applies to inbounds). It also has free movement OoB which helps a little in 02 but makes other skips harder since missing a portal shot puts you in freefall. Also, I might as well mention I have an older build again, 3258, which I think is from only a few months after the retail release, however it has broken demo recording so it's not very useful. Oh yeah and the speedrun demo record plugin only "works" with 5135 (although it's a broken mess so it doesn't really work in the strictest sense anyway).

I assume you either mean "is on the whitelist" or "isn't on the blacklist" - I can't remember which type of list Portal has.

More importantly though, scripts are not allowed for any Portal runs. A script in-game is defined as any bind to multiple commands, whether directly or via an alias or cfg file, or a plugin command like y_spt_autojump which automates perfect input. AutoHotKey and other external tools are also banned. The only exception to the rule is save;load, for historical reasons and because it's a minor convenience that doesn't really affect gameplay.

You are of course free to use autojump in your own time for fun but this leaderboard is only for scriptless runs. Hopefully this is really clear now ?
