It'd be very cool if there was some addition to the description about what was improved.

If we compare RAZZLINGTON's and my run the most obvious difference is the map. The map I use has more coal-rocks which require a lot of running but I think they speed up the early game enough to be worth it. Additionally I skip electric mining entirely and rely on burner mining drills instead. The assembler for burner mining drills should produce them faster and more consistant than just handcrafting. I have a loop for science packs that helps with distribution into the labs.

Hi Tignass, thank you for looking into this. A auto-splitter for factorio would be wonderful.

I'm posting here to ask you what should be the splits.

Splits are for the moment very individual in that every runner has their own splits. Off the top of my head there are 4 different events used for splits:

  • Entity placed (power, lab, locomotive, silo)
  • research finished (steelaxe, bots, silo)
  • (first) product finished (science, bots)
  • the 'game finished' message at the end

An other thing that we have to do manually is start the timer at the first frame. It would be very pleasant if the auto-splitter could do that for us :)

Edit: For the 100% category there are splits at certain achievements.

especially because everyone here only seems to care about operator APM.

You have a very unique view on speedruns. I never heard anyone call the runner an operator. APM is not that important in Factorio speedruns. The abillity to come up with a strategy and execute it without too many mistakes is (at least for now) way more important.

Perhaps if someone likeminded comes along and posts a video..

If everyone thinks that way things will never move forward. Sometimes it's on you to make the first step, just like Splee did here.

I think it's unfortunate it's not a bot specific run, as it's obviously designed that way.

Bots are one of many starting irems. I don't see how it's obvious they should be the focus of this scenario. The name is wave defense, so the obvious focus is defense/combat related.

I kept on suggesting deathworld, but got no takers.

Deathworl is a speedrun category for over half a year now. Feel free to play it and don't forget to submit your run ;)

Hey Splee, you inspired me to do a WD run myself. Now we can bug Anti to add the category :)

I like the rules you laid out above. Went in without watching your run. The car was a big miss on my side :/ Strategy-wise I looked for a map with all resources inside the initial wall, go for oil earlyish and commit to landmies (which I think I overdid). The fact that you can farm upgrades but not research anything gives the scenario a unique twist with a lot of strategic freedom.

Not sure what exactly it is you are looking for. For up and coming runners we usually recommend to stick with one of the existing categories and use a map from the leaderboard, that approach doesn't require any time in preview ;)

Regarding the map exchange stirng you posted: Why is there so much water? Why are cliffs and uranium enabled?

GOTLAP is 530 / 375 consumed. To make sure all labs work until the end I overproduce a lot. Production is usually around 600 / 500 by the time the locomotive is placed.

We do have both categories right now, just with different names than you are suggesting. Any% seems to be more enjoyable for most the runners and the audience. The New Game+ category however is just any% with imported blueprints. The NG+ category was meant to be a gateway for newer runners into any%, but recently most new players skipped that step or didn't submit their runs with blueprints.
