Hey folks! Let me just say here that I really love vermintide speedrunning; I think it is great in many forms for many people and I want it to be big! I think there is more than enough room for everyone to be represented in some way on speedrun.com without leading to an absurd proliferation of subcategories but to get there I think we need exactly one thing--community.
I fully support BnH's idea of getting together in one semi-exclusive place where the people who are invested in speedrunning can make it a thing. I find that when passionate people post on forums it tends to emphasize where we disagree, but when we can hear each others voices and meet each other as people we tend to find common ground. I don't want to see walls of text in forums, I want to see back and forth in discord chat, I want to meet and hear you folks. We are the kernel of the speedrunning community. So let me be the first to say it. Screw drama!!!. Let's make speedrunning v2 a thing! Along those lines, BnH I pm'd you on discord...let's all have a chat.
There is a TON to go around. The game is amazing and I think it has huge growth potential relative to V1. There is so much energy and passion in this small group of people that I only see two ways that we fail
- Waste time and don't get our stuff together due to internal dissent. we can't have legitimacy without consensus. There is no speedrun.com without speedrun community. Period.
- Fail to get good PR/public recognition of speedrunning v2 as a legitimate and serious way to play V2. Remember, speedrunning in verm gets a bad reputation because it is associated with "cheating" (because "ez loot lul") and with "no skill" (because "block and run forward lul"). These are two real PR problems that stand between us and legitimizing speedrunning as a legitimate challenge and community. These PR problems are the reason we need to get together and support each other or we will not grow and no one will care about our accomplishments.
As to the Discord...I don't think it matters too much, but here is my 2 cents. It makes sense to me to put it on a new discord personally so we can keep the traffic down without special effort, but it also makes sense to put it in SquirrelSquad because we will be able to transition even more new, up and coming hardcore verm players into speedrunners if we put ourselves out there. I could go either way but I sway slightly towards SquirrelSquad. SquirrelSquad will 100% be the hub for serious vermintide and I think it is necessary for the growth of speedrunning for it to be perceived as one form of serious play as opposed to a separate activity all together. Actually, the more I think about it the more I think we might need both, a private discord for the kernel of speedrunning that has shown themselves to be invested members of that community and an open, public face on squirrelsquad.
