This is a discussion that comes up regularly in the Discord. You're able to replay levels at any point during the game and this would be the best way to do ILs, so at some point you have to define the rules. What loadouts are acceptable to do a stage with? The ILs that usually get the most attention when this is discussed are ones done during an any% run, but there are multiple any% routes with varying levels of %.

Basically, there isn't really a community consensus on acceptable rules and the community hasn't really had the drive to come up with them.

The large number of battles in the sequel that involve casting Haste on the fighters and letting them go wild make me inclined to never ban the Quick option.

We don't use the in-game timer. It has some known inaccuracies. In particular if you quit out of a stage then any IGT used in the stage is reset.

MoO1 doesn't currently see a lot of activity. I did debate the series thing at one point, if only to eventually have a leaderboard for Master of Orion 3 (I'm sure someone out there probably wants to see it). Let's do it. If Civilization has a series, why not us?

Odds are good that those are new challenges added in a later patch that weren't in the original one.

Burn, S-Attacker and Spark to ZR for me. Movement tool.

I'm not particularly good at mashing and prefer to use ZL for Crusher or Stinger as Sophia/Jason but I do occasionally menu to change that shortcut for Jason (say if I needed seeker for a boss weakness but normally spam stinger).

Bind to ZL as Andreia.

As a sanity check I went ahead and pulled out my Switch. Reproduced bubble wrap as Shovel Knight. It's definitely there, but might be a little unintuitive (even as plague knight).

After some discussion on the discord, we're renaming some of the categories to make them more consistent with other speedgames. The plan is to switch to an any% w/ restrictions framework

Ex:

Before: QFG1VGA Major Skips After: QFG1VGA Any% No Stat Glitch

No categories are actually being changed. We're just re-naming existing categories to better fit conventions set by other games.

Patch 1.3 for the Switch has been released, as well as the version dated November 29th for Steam. Unfortunately these versions have patched out the old method of doing the Divido clip which means any runs on the older patch will have an insurmountable advantage over more modern runs. Since we don't currently have a good way to downpatch to 1.2 without jailbreaking the Switch, we've split out Any% and Good Ending categories into Modern and Legacy sub-categories. All existing runs have been put under the Legacy sub-category. If you've been looking forward to running Copen, a new category has been added for him.

I would agree with your interpretation. Some people might disagree about where exactly to end the timer, but as currently written it should stop with cursor change on Ad Avis' death.

About quitting/crashing/killed and the run being over: Don't know if there are any specific rules for or against it. My first fighter 100% run contained a couple of crashes and possibly a death. My mindset is that you can keep going, but only load saves that you created during the run, though at a certain level of optimization a game-crash or death would be a dead run anyways.

I haven't done magic-user in a while, so don't know how well the ems fix applies to Mage's Maze (I imagine it would help). But the wonky color things, we don't have any real fix for it.

The speedrunning subreddit has a starting page that you might reference (https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/wiki/faq), though could be out-of-date. Really the important points are:

  1. Correct dosbox settings (cycles=10000 is the rule, EMS=false makes your life easy)
  2. Have a tool to stream/record your runs (OBS is great for this)
  3. While not strictly necessary, a timing program helps a lot (I use LiveSplit, but there are others).

I'll comment some more about splits - they're hard to keep consistent if you're still routing. Don't worry too much about them until you're positive that time improvement comes from better execution or luck on the path you're already going to take, or maybe just use them to remind yourself what your route is. My splits have largely gone unused in fighter 100% due to the inconsistency of random encounters (I could be 2 minutes behind because I got additional encounters early, and then suddenly be 2 minutes ahead because my kobold fight was faster as a result and I finished training earlier).
