SOR2 is a great game to run!

I've started playing around with the Streets Swapper (switches randomly between SOR1/2/3 every time you kill an enemy) and also have a lot of experience running SOR4. If you ever decide to take up 4, give me a shout!

Most people would advise that you always upload your PBs as for one, it lets you see your progression years later, and two, it lets other runners see if there are tricks or techniques they could use.

I personally am in the camp where I only ever upload a new PB when I am happy with it. For instance, if my record is 5:26 and I get a 5:25 but I know I am capable of a 4:59, I'll probably wait on the 4:59 and not upload the 5:25.

A lot of people on either side get angry about it but at the end of the day IT IS UP TO YOU. If you want to upload all your PBs, go ahead, nobody would (or should) complain.

hahhah has the right of it - you really need to be checking the individual rules for each game you are wanting to run.

TYPICALLY speaking you don't require a timer at all and you can simply re-time your run manually afterwards (and a good Verifier should be re-timing your run when you submit it).

Additionally, so long as the game video/audio is clear, most leaderboards don't care if you are doing commentary / have a facecam / etc overlayed on top of the run so I don't see why a community would care if you added a timer in after-the-fact so long as your gameplay is not obscured by the timer.

But again, you need to check each game's rules to be sure.

Just noticed coolkid is doing an SMB2 run. After Summoning Salt's latest video I am very hype for that.

Played Oddesy for the first time this week, I don't see how people can complain about the SM64 camera after playing it lol it was a lot of fun but the camera killed me so many times.

Good luck!

It has been 2021 for me for almost 3 hours and let me tell you - it is wild!

HNY to all you speedrunners, and casual gamers; to all you trolls and the helpful folk on these forums; to the bots and the TASers; and especially to anyone who decides to play Streets Of Rage 4 in 2021 🙄

Something else I think will help you JP that I didn't really make obvious in my previous post:

Consider your speedruns as a challenge against YOURSELF, specifically against your average self.

Trying to take on the #1 in a game is always going to be mentally draining. Even trying to play against your own "best ever run" can be overwhelming. So instead, I like to think 'big picture' - am I playing better today, than against my average play over the last two or three months? If so, it doesn't matter if this specific run isn't perfect, so long as overall I am playing better. If not, then why not? What do I need to improve?

In the heat of the moment, setting short-term goals to really push yourself is good. But taking a step back it is good to remember that you are probably playing a lot better today than you were yesterday/last month/last year and in the end, we play games to have fun and we speedrun to improve ourselves first and foremost, the records and leaderboards come secondary to that.

"Splits" are basically splitting the full game into segments and gauging your pace against it. For example:

If your game has 5 levels, your splits would be Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5.

Your "PB splits" is your Personal Best time for each segment ie:

Level 1 completed in 3:49, Level 2 in 4:25, etc etc

What and how they work depends what you use. Livesplit is the most famous splitter program. You would be best looking up Youtube tutorials on how to configure Livesplit as there are plenty of more professional explanations out there than what I could provide you over text :)

Hello,

Every game has its own specific rules however generally speaking, you will need to submit video evidence for your run. (You should check the actual rules of the game(s) you intend to run first however).

There are many ways to record - again the specific communities can help you in more detail. However basically:

  • you can use a capture card to record your TV output to your PC if it is console game you are playing
  • you can use Twitch or OBS to record your monitor if it is a PC game you are playing
  • you can use a phone camera / DSLR / webcam to record your screen if it is a mobile/handheld game you are playing

That obviously is just an overview, you will need to make sure that whatever method you use abides by the rules of your chosen game(s) community. But typically speaking - where there is a will, there is a way, even if it is just pointing your phone at a screen and hitting record!

Hello :) what do you mean by list?

If you mean a sub-category of Roblox, you need to ask one of the moderators of the game community to add it.

If you mean to add to your own personal list of games, there is a "Follow" button.

Either way, if you type "Roblox" into that search box at the top it will lead you to the Roblox community :D good luck! Have fun!

Nice one! Well, if you don't know, the GTAV boards can be found here - https://www.speedrun.com/gtav

There is also a forum there to ask questions, a discord and several resources :D good luck with the runs!

Oh I might watch that too. I'm not a Mega Man fan but the category sounds interesting and the runner is good!

Pretty much what everyone has said above. It is ridiculously hard to look at a well established game and a well established route and think you can leap right into it.

You will probably enjoy just playing the game(s) casually at first, try to optomise your run yourself, then try to add in one or two timesaves/glitches and build your way up to it. Nobody leaps into something at the top tier, ever - you don't go to the gym and start lifting the heaviest weight in your first session; you don't put on a pair of football boots and expect to score the winning goal in the world cup final tomorrow; etc. It takes steps, it takes practice, it takes moving forward in increments.

However.... there is something to be said about have an AWARENESS of techniques before starting, so that you don't build up bad muscle memory.

But yeah as has already been said - take it in chunks, one step at a time, and if you are looking for specific resources for specific games, ask that community - most will have a Discord, but at the very least they will have a forum here and they will have Moderators who should be able to point you in the right directions.

Hello,

I don't know your reasons behind not submitting runs, but I feel compelled to point out that literally nobody will submit your runs for you or browse your YouTube looking for runs to submit.

Hopefully you keep enjoying playing games and if you ever do want to return, see you then! Happy New Year.
