So pausing to menu doesn't pause your time?

Considering that runs are based off of ingame time, is it legal to throw two pearls, pause, and then do trigonometry calculations to find the stronghold, and then unpause? As long as I manually do the calculations, without a calculator (is paper and pen fine?)
