Hello! Made some changes to the leaderboard and wanted to document and explain them here.
-
Added milliseconds. Please do not submit your runs with milliseconds included. We will frame count and add the milliseconds when we verify your run. It will likely be reserved for podium runs only.
-
Removed the NES/Famicom separation from the Any% board since there is no significant difference between them for that route.
-
Added an "Any% (Deathless)" category. This is the old way of running the game before the "shortcut" was implemented. I copied over the old WR runs that fit those rules, but there are also still in main category because they are also the Any% WRs of their day. Anyone else is free to either move their eligible runs to the new category by editing their submission, or they may submit a duplicate if they want the run represented in both categories.

i have added the variable.
added a variable to the individual planets leaderboard to specific which monster was used. since the big20 rules require you to kill the enemy kaiju, you'll want to use godzilla, but the top strats use mothra, but skips fights. this way you can compare your runs against godzilla runs only.
thought i'd start a thread for big 20 advice here for anyone who doesn't have discord, but if you do have discord you should join our server and get advice there. here's an earth tutorial i made a long time ago for JSR when he ran godzilla for his AVGN Trials. i think it could be helpful for people to get started, but it's a little outdated. i'll list a few "updates" below. it looks like the big 20 rules require the enemy monsters to be killed, so you'll want to use old school godzilla strategy, not the newer mothra strategy which skips the fights.
-you don't have to kill mothra first. but it's good to do it early so you don't have to move the "cursor" farther on the map.
-you can hit both of moguera's hitboxes at once with a tail slap if you hop a little while slapping.this doesn't wok with gezora because she has only one hitbox.
-in the "brain tree" screen, you can jump up high to make the metroids fly high then you can duck under them. this is faster than using a breath weapon to avoid knockbacks because the breath weapon causes lag.
-kicking slows you down a little bit on side scrolling screen, so you should probably do it less than i did it in this video. but i wouldn't go so far as to tell you to never kick. it can still be handy.
i vote no.
seems like way too much effort for such a small community. there are so many tracks, many of which we don't even see in the main category.
as a general rule i don't like categories that don't require additional skills beyond the skills used in the main category. It's not enough for the rules to be different. using more nitros and not having to worry about pickups feels like less skill, not more.
If we did feel like we needed more categories i'd be more interested in something like "All Tracks(In Game Time)" or "Max Stats, NO Nitro Usage". But individual tracks for this doesn't excite me.
i don't think you can make multiple IL boards, but you might be able to make it a variable, have that variable listed in a column, then make runs of different variables not obsolete eachother. so if a runner has runs with both moneters they will both be listed, but the slower one won't have a place number. if people want to see the leaderboard with just one monster they can use the settings to "filter" by the variable.
oh yeah i remember that. "exact change only"
nah. that doesnt seem to be it.
wow. that's pretty wild. i wonder if it has to do with both trucks passing the finish line at the same time, possibly on the same frame? like the code can't count both laps at once. i can maybe try to replicate in a TAS to see if that's it.
i'll take a gander
I made a mesen/mesenRTA request over a year ago here: https://www.speedrun.com/mtpo/forums/azz48
as best i recall, it seemed like there were a couple of moderators who were fine with adding it, but at least one mod who felt like there were "enough" approved emulators for people to choose from. i don't think an official decision was ever made and i didn't feel like pushing the issue at the time. but if mods are willing to re-open the discussion i would like to once again voice my hope that we can add at least mesenRTA (which removed the "run ahead" option, among other things). I have unsubmitted IL runs i'd love to finally submit to the board.
-open livesplits -right click for menu. -select edit layout -select the "+" button. -control > manual game time -press ok -right clcik for menu -compare against > game time
there shouldn't be any difference in the RNG system in general. the only real difference between consoles and emu, in terms of RNG, is where the RNG "starts" because the memory is being initialized differently. BUT if you do the razor shield manip, which works on both console and emu, RNG will start in the same place. this makes the razor shield manip the great equalizer.
Hello current and future Feuders!
We've made some changes to the leaderboard and wanted to explain them so people understood the reasoning.
WR strategies in Family Feud involve a strategy called "seed targeting" which we use to ensure we get desired questions. Unfortunately, Emulators and Flashcarts provide a level of consistency when starting up that makes it easier to do this, especially when a TAS can be used to hunt down the right frame to start a game. (FCEUX in particular can target the BEST seed early after a reset with aid of an audio cue).
So in the interest of fairness it has been decided that Emulators and Flashcarts should not share the same leaderboards as Original Cartridge. Under the two categories ('Fast Money Win' and '$20,000') you can filter the board by selecting the appropriate variables. 1p1c and 1p2c can also be selected as an additional filter.
Even though the Emulator/Flashcart categories have more runs posted to them, we are keeping 'Original Cartridge' as the default variable since the accessibility offered by those options is not the same as popularity.
Mesen does not have a "faster processor speed". Mesen bans were a knee-jerk reaction to the run-ahead feature, which many people mistakenly thought was undetectable. This is not true. Use of run ahead can be detected so long as the input display feature is turned on. You can learn more about that in this youtube video I created:
Unfortunately many of the games that were quick to ban Mesen have been slow to unban it. But for the record: Ninja Gaiden, one of the most competitive NES speedruns, has unbanned Mesen.
As Xenkaroshi pointed out, MesenRTA is a great alternative. Not only did it remove the run ahead feature completely (so that moderators don't have to bother detecting its use) it has other enhancements that make it harder for people to get away with certain shenanigans like romhacks and memory watch. I made this "infomercial" detailing all of that which you can watch here:
variables can be set to not obsolete eachother. so your fastest OoB and fastest No OoB runs would both be displayed. we do this on family feud for emu/original cartridge/flashcart.
the fastest of the runs would have a number placement on the board. the slower run would be listed but have a "-" in the rank column.
for example if that change were made now. ProfessorRetro's OoB run would be in 1st place and his No OoB run would be 5th on the list, but Ischbinder would still have "5th" place.
hello. i know i'm not a member of this game's community, so my opinion shouldn't hold much weight. but i've been following this discussion and wanted to add my 2 cents.
i believe there's a difference between runs that pre-date new tech and runs that deliberately choose to not use that tech. the any% runs of the past were any% when submitted and should remain as such. "No OoB" and/or "Glitchless" categories are fine in general, but any% shouldn't be gutted of it's entire history.
What categories you have and how they're regulated are of course up to your community, but just for the sake of showing a way things could be done: In jaws, there's a death exploit that started getting used for WR runs a couple of years ago. Eventually I added a Deathless category, which was the traditional way of running the game. I copied over the legacy WRs that fit the category's rules but kept them in any% also. In the forum post announcing the new category I told all other runners that they had the choice to move their eligible runs, leave them in any%, or make a duplicate submission.
