I agree with Wryvin. It's a lot easier to enforce vanilla only than to try to decide what mods are okay or not.
It's also worth noting that using mods (in general, I don't know about this game specifically) can have some weird side effects that could potentially give you an unfair advantage. It's unlikely that anyone would really be able to capitalize on that, but it's certainly not impossible.
I didn't consider using ghosts as proof, that makes a lot of sense.
Clutter wouldn't be an issue. Speedrun.com can support multiple leaderboards for the same game, so IL's could be completely separate from the rest of the leaderboard (look at Star Wars: Battlefront II for an example of this). With this, each level could be a category and each engine class could be a tab. 48 categories is a lot, but as long as there isn't an artificial limit I think the system could handle it. And since it's completely separate, it wouldn't have any effect on the existing leaderboard, and people who didn't care about it would never need to see it. It would still be a lot of work, but I don't think it would be a waste. A couple people have already expressed interest in it, and I think there would be plenty of submissions considering how easy it is to do and prove a time trial (not having to worry about recording or timing the run yourself makes things a lot easier for new runners).
But, all things considered, I get where you're coming from and what you're saying makes sense.
Sorry for bumping this, but I wanted to chime in and say that I would like this too. Keeping track of things on multiple sites is annoying, so I would rather have it all in the same place. I think it would also be good for new runners. Time trials are relatively easy to do and very easy to prove (all you really need is a picture of the end card), so it would be a good way for new runners to get into the game.
As for the Mario Kart Players Page, many of time trial runs on there don't seem to have any proof attached to them (for lower ranking runs it's fine, but world records should at least have something). That site also doesn't allow glitches or unintended shortcuts in their runs. I don't know if there even are any, but if someone found any then we wouldn't be able to use them there.
Also, in-game leaderboards definitely don't make this pointless. I don't know about this game specifically, but generally speaking in-game leaderboards are ridiculously easy to hack, and as a result are incredibly unreliable.
I think in the original thread we specified that victory was required, but I guess we didn't include that in the rules. As for team killing and then switching for the victory, it's an interesting idea but we probably shouldn't allow it. I think it would make things too easy for some game modes.
Does Origins even really have any major skips? I haven't had time to watch a full run of it (other than my own, of course).
I'm not a mod, but since you did all the maps in a category together, I don't see why this would be an issue. Nothing carries over between maps in Instant Action, so it doesn't give you any advantage. You'd basically just be treating the other categories as IL's. It's also be worth noting that this would be an extra incentive to do 100% runs.
Just out of curiosity, how long do you think the full 100% run would've taken you?
I think it would be useful if you could dismiss old notifications. That would make it a lot easier to keep track of what's actually new, especially if you get a lot of notifications. Although, even something as simple as lightly graying out notifications you've already seen could serve a similar purpose.
I don't stream on Twitch (my internet isn't reliable enough, and I wouldn't be able to stream at a consistent time), so I don't have the problem of the video getting muted, but when I uploaded my run to YouTube it forces ads onto the video because of the music. In the future I'll probably turn off the music in game so that I don't have this problem.
Cool! Just finished recording a Hunt run. Once I have all the levels timed I'll submit it.
Categories all sound good to me. Rules look good to, sticking to defaults makes things easier for everyone. Having Jedi on all the time could be fun, but I think it would make things too easy (especially for Conquest, since you would pretty much be able to take all the command posts immediately with virtually no resistance). For XL missions, it's probably easiest to just not require them in 100% runs, as the only other option I can think of would be to have separate categories for consoles and PC (which I think would be a bit overkill, especially considering there's only one console runner at the moment). I like the suggestion for loading times, that way we only have to worry about timing the levels themselves.
Edit: My mistake, there's more than one console runner, there's a couple PS2 runs in the Galactic Conquest sections that I didn't see.
I'm glad someone suggested this. I was planning on doing an instant action run for the first game, but I don't have any way to record my Xbox. I haven't done any SWBF2 runs (the campaign and Galactic Conquest are a bit too much of a drag for me personally), but I would if this category existed. I think I would be interested in an "All Maps Conquest%", but I'm open to other possibilities as well.
