Good job, guys! As of 5/28/2020 we've donated 604,488 grains in total.
¤HYPE UP¤! We've already fed 31 people for an entire day. (takes 19,200 grains for each!)
Keep going! I'll be updating this post every 100K!
Update July 2022: I won't be doing total updates. Maybe someone can take over and sticky a new post. I wonder if we've hit one million... :))
I just realized I can help yall out with this for the future. If you mess something up while submitting a run, need a time change, want to delete the run, etc:
Go to the hourglass symbol in the navigation bar. Click "view all." Under "runs awaiting verification," simply click on the run you want to edit/delete. It will take you to the video of the run. Click on the vertical ellipsis on the topright of the box (above the video). There you can easily change or delete your run.
If you need more help with things like this, please ask!
Thanks for your interest, guys! I'm so glad you are speedrunning this game!
While the community grows, I would suggest getting mod practice by requesting a new game (Games (dropdown), All Games, Request a game). There are a bunch of new webgames and indie games out there that need leaderboards -- if you do a run of it and request the game, you should hear back in about 2 weeks if kirkq (admin) accepts it. You are automatically the mod of the game and can get practice setting up the leaderboard, making rules, and verifying runs. Jaychalke, I see you've done this already. Make sure you upload a run to Golf It or they'll take your LB (leaderboard) down :D
Second important thing to consider -- you need to be accurate with timing and know which runs to reject/edit. Jay, on most of your vids you do a good job with accuracy on timing. But endtime should always be taken at the exact moment when you see the final rice count appear. In one of your videos, the clip cut out before hitting 100, so I rejected it. In another, you added 1.5 seconds to your run because the video froze on your final 10 grains -- I will have to edit it and increase the time to where I first see you hit 100 grains (not an arbitrary time somewhere in the freeze).
If you guys keep it up and submit more valid runs, this will show me your dedication and ability to moderate. I'd love to have you helping me out!
Hey guys!
Before this channel explodes with more runs, I wanted to ask about Twitch chat usage.
Currently, the rules state that all runs should be solo runs, but nothing is explicitly said about using the chat to get answers quicker (and to have more fun).
As we discussed before, there are only a few subjects that use critical thinking and may take more time to answer. For instance, answering SAT questions takes more time than basic math. Twitch chat could be exploited by getting a crowd of people to answer your SAT questions for you.
What do you think? We could ban it for some categories and allow it for others. Or perhaps we could make separate categories like SAT (No Twitch Chat) and SAT (Twitch Chat).
Please let me know what categories might be affected by this. Thanks for your input!
Jay! Dude! I'm loving this haha :D
I have rejected the runs that you specified. Would you mind if I verify the rest over a span of time? This will get Free Rice more views on the home page -- every day people will see a new run or two by you.
Or I can verify them all today, just let me know.
Thanks! I'm glad you are getting these runs going. I hope some competition comes in soon :D
I need the names of these cars for categories: Mystery common car between Snow Plough and Ice Cream Truck. Mystery epic car between UFO and Ghost Car. Mystery legendary car after Shooty Speeder.
All are labeled "???" until you unlock them. I have the rare one: RC Car (between Big Rig and Sport Turbo).
For some runs, users write something like "run starts at 2:20" in the comments of their run. Is it possible to allow for submissions of YouTube videos that start at a specific time? Currently, any video submitted with a time modification (?t=##m##s at the end of the link) will ignore the modification and start at 0:00. This fix would save a lot of editing time for users who submit runs using YouTube.
June 2018 Edit: Thanks for implementing this feature!
This seems useful for longer runs, like 120 Shrines and 100%. Can you post a video of these finds? I'm sure people would use them if you posted a youtube link.
Discord: https://discord.gg/CcqRdrw (General discussions - you don't have to run this game to join!)
Free Rice: http://freerice.com/content-group/speedruncom-0 (Total rice accumulator for our runs -- we don't use this much)
Free Rice Beta Speedrun.com Group Code: SSE4WDX3
Woot! Let's keep it up, guys! Hopefully we can get more runners as they roll out the updates :D
Hey, mod here!
If you have the full version of the game, please let me know if the categories reflect what's available for play. I know you can play up to four players on multiplayer, but I'm not sure about solo play.
Thanks!
Update: I have a new favorite way to time runs! Download and read the instructions of this tool: https://github.com/Slush0Puppy/retime
It provides accurate millisecond timing for YouTube videos in seconds. Created by @SlushPuppy/Beta tested by me.
Hello, all! Just thought this post was necessary because it will help mods verify your runs faster.
There are a few ways to time your game, but here's the one I like best:
- Download a video editor like Shotcut
- Load your video into the editor
- Use the millisecond counter to step frame-by-frame.
- Record where your run starts and where your run ends.
- Do the math
- Submit the correct time :D
This process only takes about 3 minutes! While using a timer on your phone may be somewhat accurate, Google says: The average reaction time for humans is 0.25 seconds to a visual stimulus. Keep that in mind for future submissions!
I just wrote a nice post that got deleted because I logged out in another page... :/
Summary: The speedrun.com homepage has the "latest runs" feature, which is perhaps one of the best on the site. It really helps get all sorts of games the recognition they deserve, and even helps people find games they may want to run.
Currently, the "latest games" acts like a queue that is based on when runs are submitted. But it be based on when runs are verified. For example, a user named Jonas submitted a Color Switch run yesterday that was verified today. When I logged out of my account to see where it was on the latest runs page, it was the last game featured. I reloaded the page a minute later and the run, along with several other runs that the mods verified today, were grouped together off of the page. This is because other games that were submitted and verified later pushed Color Switch off of the "latest runs" page.
Please change the page to feature runs that have just been verified. This will help ensure that all games get the attention they deserve -- until an "exploration" feature is implemented (see ROM's suggestion above).
WR history graph fix #2: It would be great to have a switch to toggle every category off/on so we don't have to toggle all of them just to get a close-up on one category.
Edit 07/27/2023 WR Graph All Categories Toggle is more or less fixed with the update allowing us to select a single category. Thanks!
Thanks for the update, kirkq :)
I noticed something this week about the WR history graph. If more than one person beats a record in a day, the only one that shows up in the graph is the faster time. For instance, today over at https://www.speedrun.com/Color_Switch/gamestats you can see that ChocolateTheGaming beat the WR for Challenge 1-10. But in all fairness, jonasobv beat the record earlier in the day, so his record should be displayed on the graph as well. I've seen this occur on other leaderboards as well (like Disney Crossy Road).
Hey Luton! I'd love to glance at that paper when you're done with it.
I started speedrunning this past December on Disney Crossy Road (mobile game like Frogger). Then I moved to webgames because they are much easier to record. I've noticed a lack in web-game runs since I've been here -- the games that I run usually have to be submitted as new leaderboards.
Before I answer your questions, you should know that I speedrun for different reasons than most. For me, its not about grinding to achieve a new record and beat others. Really, I just like building community -- I actually encourage others to beat my scores. It's really cool when it happens, too -- as a mod, I can verify the run they submitted and it goes straight to the speedrun.com front page for all to see. During its time on the front page, usually 30 or more people will watch the run and, hopefully, at least one or two people will consider running the game themselves! I also like starting new leaderboards to help spread the word about less well-known developers who are looking for a chance to get their game on Steam. One example: https://www.speedrun.com/Code_Red
Now to answer your Qs: Firstly how much practice do you do for some of your attempts? With the exception of Disney Crossy Road, which I play for fun a few days a week, I practice enough to upload a competitive first run. This means that I will play the game through at least three times before I make a recording. After my first recording, I may choose to improve the time before uploading. I usually won't run the same category again once its on the leaderboard.
What are some of your favourite games to set records on? Why? Disney Crossy Road was my start to speedrunning. Since they frequently release new levels (Beauty and the Beast came out this week), I like to set records for those to help promote the game on the speedrun.com front page. Color Switch is a lot of fun to run because it is also a popular mobile game with tons of levels. Many of the categories don't have record holders, so it's fun to be the first one to attempt WR. Finally, I enjoyed running Code Red so much that I set up and played three categories for it. The first is your regular Any%, but then I added a Pacifist% (kill nothing) and a Genocide% (kill everything). I hope other people run the game with me and help promote the guys who made it!
Finally, how often have you repeated record attempts, either to beat your own record or to better someone else's? As I said before, I rarely go back and PB once my run is on a leaderboard. I'm just not that competitive haha. Maybe I should, if I really want to get people interested in running the games I moderate...
