Generally, what are you seeing is basically the video output of the console being sent to a computer to be streamed and recorded via a capture card, and generally there is a video splitter in the mix that sends the signal to a TV as well. The timer is being added on as a layer over the stream going through the computer, and the splits are being controlled on a keyboard.

@6oliath there a discord invite somewhere?

thread: Speedrunning

Basically a thread where anyone can advertise games. Won't be as useful as one might think. People are already free, more or less, to make a post on the board saying "Hey! Come check out this game for speedrunning." The thing is, most people are already expending a good amount of time on whatever it is they are playing. Picking up a new game and getting a decent run might require months of effort, which is hard to fit into your schedule when you are playing another game for months. Additionally, most of the people speedrunning are not really hanging out on these forums.

IMO, it's better to give suggestions to people who are actively asking on the forums for some games to run. They'll generally give you their platform range and tastes, etc. If a game you know of is a good fit, then by all means. Heck, I refer people just generally to my profile if what they are seeking describes a good portion of the games I've played, and that attracts some people to leaderboards I mod that could more runners. I'd rather see a single thread where people looking for suggestions can ask, but I imagine since a lot of newish speedrunners generally ask, they aren't going to see the specific thread for it and will start new ones anyways.

I'd probably just try to contact a full mod or admin on the discord, honestly, and let them know the situation.

Looks like it's some basic self-contained software to play the FnF rom, but it doesn't work accurately. Some of the functions of the game appear to be as such: the arcade game has some functions that allow it to change view (presumably left, right, and back) while you are driving. In this particular running of the game, which appears to be cobbled together by hobbyists who work on getting arcade roms, this function doesn't work correctly. When the input is pushed, it freezes the game, and when you push it again, the game unfreezes and glitches out.

Basically the result of inaccurate emulation.

Welcome. I don't have any particular suggestions, but I have ran a random assortment of stuff, plenty which are less than half of an hour, on my profile. You might something of interest.

In either case, best of luck on your runs.

Can take up to two weeks (three weeks if the backlog is getting big). I got three submitted, one back from the 16th. Just takes some time.

I didn't think about that, but ya I suppose so. Could be something that's added by request and approved by moderators, just so it wouldn't in appear on leaderboards where it wouldn't be relevant.

Only really thinking about it since here we are, but couldn't it be possible to list category extensions on a lb in the same way the "Full Game Runs" and "Level Runs" are listed? It'd basically be like duplicating the Full Game Runs code and then calling the duplicate portion "Category Extensions" instead.

thread: Speedrunning

@Carmageddonlord1 Ah, I see now. For some reason it's listed as BuzzingCars in a lot of places. That is obscure.

On the bright side, looks like the developer released a lot of their old stuff for the public domain last year, so I can grab it later on and see if I can play around with it. Windows 95-ME software can be sort of finicky, especially if no patches are available.

thread: Columns

Just curious, but this game is pretty well ported, so I was curious if this lb accommodates runs from like Sega CD and Turbografx and such?

Are you playing through DOSBox? If so, you aren't going to be able to use "Game Capture" to capture full screen game play. Honestly, if you are playing anything really old, Game Capture is probably not going to work.

As described above, you have Global Hotkeys turned off (most likely) in LiveSplits, which is preventing your hotkeys you set from working when another window is selected. Probably going to want to check to make sure your LiveSplit hotkeys don't overlap with hotkeys in DOSBox or whatever game you are playing.

thread: Speedrunning

Never used GOG before, and I don't know what game you refer to, so pretty limited what I could say. Is there any reason to believe the GOG release is in anyway different from the original DOS version of the game? Are the two versions clearly marked as being different versions? It seems like both things can be accommodated for if they are in any way different by their release details. Generally, I'd imagine, the resolution of the game has probably been approved, which can affect game play.

Red Alert is a game that was released for DOS, and also released for PC (where it can play faster). Additionally, it's been updated by fans up to 3.03 and released for free, with various things fixed. There aren't enough runs to separate that all into subcategories, though the details are still kept track of with a variable and by platform, and people tend to play the most, free, fan updated version. When you keep track of certain details about versions, they can be converted into subcategories later if it becomes more applicable.

Alright, so the thing about this, is that photo verification is limited it what it can sort of cover. As far Score Attack is concerned, that's obviously alright; their is two ways to verify a time for that, at the end screen of a run, or through the in-game leader board.

For Normal, Tokoton, I'm not sure what I could possibly verify other than the time needed to get the default first place auto high score in the game, which is 600k and 500k. Could do the same for Quest as well, at 400k points.

For Quest, Any%, I would need to a picture of the end game screen to verify all 8 levels were actually compeleted. (You can play Quest and basically just let the timer run out over and over, and get a sub 8 minute time. So the only way to actually confirm the rounds are beaten is the end-game screen).

It does seem like, outside of the Score Attack rankings, that you'd be slightly disadvantaged in taking a picture of the ranking on an actual GBA. Why? Well, because in a recording, I can verify the exact point in time someone hit, say 600k points. But on the rankings, you'd need to 600k points and then end the game to stop the IGT to give you a ranking.

Additionally outside the categories I've described above, any other future category that was made would probably be video verification only, because there's no actual way to verify anything was complete (get to level 10, etc.).

So, given all that, I don't see any issue with allowing the photographs of GBA scores for those specific categories. It will take a couple days to get all the categories and all the rules set up correctly and clear as possible, so keep an eye for that for further clarification on what kind of picture you might need depending on the category.

Fair enough. I don't really see anything unreasonable about it; I would guess it would come down to the ease in which it could be implemented. I imagine RTA is a fixed field for a reason though, so might be hard to get functionality removing it. But given that it might be simpler than that, I don't really see any negatives with the idea.

thread: The Site

I mean, if someone submits a real-time when they aren't suppose to, whoever is verifying the run can just remove that real-time. That being said, not necessarily against the idea.

thread: The Site

If the game has been up for longer than a given period, not even Super Mods can delete their own game. The board in question is like 3 years old.
