You need to show the bottom screen when beginning the run (selecting New File) in case we need to retime the run. Otherwise, only showing the top screen is fine, but we would prefer both screens.
By the way, if you need help making your recording setup, come ask in our discord! (linked in the sidebar)
From a game completion standpoint, I totally agree that No Powerups is arbitrary and shouldn't be a category. However, I really think that it presents a fun and unique challenge, which is more important than whether or not the game treats it differently (number of stars on your file) in my opinion.
We have decided to allow this method of RNG manipulation. Thanks for the input, everyone!
Reviving this thread a second time because it is once again relevant. If you're confused, read the rest of this thread.
PidgeyProwler recently thought he found a new RNG manipulation method for Wii U VC. It turned out to be the same method posted about in this thread; he just wasn't aware of it.
Pidgey is currently doing runs with this method of RNG manip because he didn't know it's currently banned. I told him during his stream that this isn't a new discovery, and it is banned. He said he's okay with his potential new PB not being accepted because he's mostly doing runs for practice.
What are your thoughts? Do you think this method of RNG manip should be banned? The other mods and I aren't sure where we stand on the issue, so we would really appreciate if you expressed your opinions.
VC and emu have significantly faster loading times than DS, so we add on an amount of time to make it fair. Think of the Time Without Loads column as the "Real Time" column, and the Time With Loads column as the "Adjusted Time" column. The reason they are called what they are is because I can't change the names of the columns; I would much prefer to call them "Real Time" and "Adjusted Time". Sorry for the confusion.
To clear up what Kraken said: don't reset if you don't get the shell in 1-2; you can get it every time in the red toad house (there's a consistent setup) for a 15 second timeloss. If you miss it in the toad house, then you should reset.
You don't need to reset if you die, unless it's a game over I guess. Just keep going and try to beat the game for your first run. Also I guess you should reset if you die in 1-T, because you need to use the blue shell for the secret exit. Going through world 1 and 2 loses many, many minutes.
In the future, you can try recording with your webcam/phone/camera off to the side a bit, so your face isn't visible in the reflection. As long as we can still see the screen clearly, you are allowed to have the recording at an angle like that.
That works, NihilistComedyHour. And UbuntuJackson, the reason is just personally we don't like how it looks when some runs have milliseconds, and others don't. It's inconsistent, and we don't like that look.
But yeah I'll add milliseconds to the old WR but to the new one and that will fix it.
Thanks everyone!
Yes, aesthetic reasons. Again, I was just wondering if there was some setting I missed that would solve this problem. If not, I will gladly use one of the two solutions I mentioned.
Hi,
I'm the head moderator for New Super Mario Bros. (https://www.speedrun.com/nsmbds). A few days ago, the world record was set at 23:03. Today, the same player set a new record with a lower 23:03. After verifying the run, I noticed that the older run was still shown on the leaderboard, and the new run was only shown as an obsoleted run since we only time to the second. Is there any way to easily change this?
I realize that the simplest solution would be to add milliseconds to his two runs. However, we as a community decided that it doesn't look good to have only one run (or only the top runs) be timed with milliseconds, so if one runs is, then all should be. We also decided that we didn't want to time every single run to the millisecond because that would be a lot of work for us moderators, and anyway there are runs without video that we would not be able to time.
Another solution would be to reject the old WR, verify the new one, then verify the old one again. The dates of the WRs could be changed too, if that's necessary to make the new one visible by default. I don't like that solution, especially if we have to change the dates, because it would cause the WR data to be inaccurate. However, if there is not any easy way to make the new WR show up by default, I will use this method or any other method that works.
Thanks, MyLittleWalrus
Downloading ROMs is the illegal part of emulation, so as moderators for this website we're not supposed to condone doing it. Someone else could probably help you, though.
desmume is the only allowed emulator. There is a setting you need to change to make it not run like trash, but I forget what it is. Does anyone else remember?
We have made our final decision: for all categories, the leaderboard will be split between official releases and emulator. This will not affect individual level runs.
I've tried a crouch only run before; you need to uncrouch for all pipes. There are a lot of reasons why the crouch-only run is bad and arbitrary. You can do it if you want to though.
We were talking about this on the discord server, and I posted a message regarding "the right to speedrun". I think it should be added to the discussion here on the forum:
In my opinion, speedrunning is not a basic human right that should be granted to everyone. If you can't afford the game, or your parents don't allow you to own a gaming system, then sorry but you might not be able to speedrun. It sucks, but speedrunning is not a right; it's a hobby that includes a small entry fee.
v1be said it in this thread (the messages by the deleted user). It was more of an unwritten rule
Right now we have it so that VC runs should have video of 5 seconds before file select. I don't know if anyone follows that rule though lol
Reviving this old thread because it is relevant again.
It is now possible to manipulate RNG on DS/3DS, and I'm guessing some people would reevaluate their opinions on the matter. I still think it should not be allowed, but I'm willing to discuss this again.
If you're confused, read the first post in this thread.
