Actually a good idea! I'll get right onto adding the categories.

Nice runs so far btw!

All good here, yeah! Viper's description was talking about the time seen on the speedrun timer on screen, not the video timestamp.

Not a runner (yet), but yeah it's pretty much this. Usually, the game's lowest % gets figured out before setting the category up and then runners just try to get the fastest time on said lowest percentage. The routes will often look drastically different compared to Any% etc.

As for this in BP I'm curious how well it would work in the end. Should be a fun challenge, but I'm wondering if accidentally destroying one billboard would already invalidate the run or if the % will allow for minor mishaps like that.

Truly, one of the posts of all time.

I appreciate your enthusiasm @ispor, but you should look at what most games, especially the PlayStation Speedrunning community as a whole usually settle on. These discussions have been had numerous times before regarding other games and people have come to some generally accepted standards. @Subsonix has brought up some great points as well!

Big PS game series like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, etc. all seperate Emulator runs completely from console runs for various reasons. PS Emulators - no matter how great they are - all show inaccuracies to varying degrees compared to their console counterparts, especially when it comes to things like emulating lag/slowdown in a busy game like this. Also, console categories should work as a way to seperately rank runs performed on any official means of playing the game. PS2 (usually with FDS enabled) is almost always the fastest option to do just that and is therefore the console you'll see the most when looking at top PS1 speedrun records.

Very rarely will you see Emu and Console share a leaderboard. This usually only happens when a leaderboard is neglected/set up by people who don't know much about these things or when Emulators put you at a disadvantage with slower loads and otherwise function equally. Spyro & Crash Bandicoot games are an example for this ruling. Usually, PSN rereleases get ranked alongside other console versions, as they're "official" releases emulated on console, but I've seen them ranked seperately from both Console & Emu before (FF7-9) and totally understand the reasoning. Personally, I'd not be opposed to adding a seperate category for it.

As for PAL & NTSC versions: One region's version will always be more optimal than the other so if you wanted a faster time, you'd get that version and use it for future runs. Also, it's easier to get a different region's game than it is to get the perfect console if you wanted a top time so accesibility is less of a reason to split regions here. Unless the content of the regions differ drastically, all regions are pretty much always ranked together.

Just giving my two cents on the matter here. Again, Tume would be the one to settle on and apply any big changes to this board.

Of course you can post offline recordings! As long as they're one continuous video without cuts/missing parts in between you're good to go. In fact, I'm not aware of any boards on this site that require you to have streamed your runs before posting them.

(Personally, I'm not able to stream stuff either due to bad internet so I can relate.)

Say no more. I took care of it (as good as the site allows me without revamping the whole board - it will look much better once they roll out the announced subcategory changes). Everybody feel free to submit the runs yourself so that details like run date, drive type etc. are accurate!

PS: I've noticed you picking this game/run up a while ago and was hoping you'd wanna submit to the boards sometime. Nice!

As of now, I don't think there is one. Sorry!

That's what the Any% category is for. SeemsGood

I see no reason why it shouldn't be allowed. RetroArch just works as a fancy frontend to load the exact same mednafen which is allowed on these boards.

By the way, you can put a dedicated Discord server link in the sidebar on the left. 'Edit game' and it's up there.

Reject runs running on a faster framerate then their original releases. No doubt about it, imo!

Either 1 or 3. Option 1 would make some current leaderboards look much better since the IGT is measured in a points-system.

Hey man, glad to see some more interest in this great game! If you wanna discuss more with me and anyone else who might be interested, just join the #MGSR discord, we got a Ac!d channel over there at https://discord.gg/4vrB3Kb ! I'm interested to see what you can bring to the table.

Oh , and I'm already in the process of doing a multi-segmented NG run myself (even though it's been on hold for a while). It just takes a ton of time to get everything just right.

I'd also like to see 'Wreckless' being a thing for certain categories. There's many reasons for it, as some of us already mentioned here. I think the best solution would be to set up subcategories (Wreckless / Wreckfest? :D) for all the categories in question. That'd be a quick fix that's easily set up.

I'm not a mod, but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be allowed. As far as I'm aware, the only thing different in the patched NTSC-J version is the language.

Well, if you wanna do Time Attack runs, then check the Level Leaderboard for most Tekken games. You'd be doing one TA run per character. Putting up 'full-game' TA categories wouldn't make that much sense to me, since it would be too similar to the more fitting categories that we have now.

Lower Saxony, GermanyMarlonH86 years ago

Nice stuff! I wish we wouldn't have to downscale them to 18x18 though. Would look much better like this.

EDIT: There's a problem. The High Scores seem to get lost at times. I've tried several ways to keep them saved, but they don't always seem to be there anymore when reloading your save. Then again, the High Scores were possible to load the first time I've tried.it (and made this post). _ The "Score Skip" let's you consistently skip around 2 seconds after each race. You get straight to the "Bonus Cars" screen and skip the two prior screens & animations.

A little up to a lot of preparation is needed to fully set up the skip for future runs. In order to do so, you'll need to set 3 High Scores that you're very unlikely to beat for each or most of the races in your run. You can then save your Wreckin' Racing / Smash 4 $ Career and it'll be there to reload the next time you turn your game on. Of course you'd have to back off to the Main Menu after loading your "Score Skip Save" so you can start a new Career like always. The High Scores however, won't reset. They'll stay loaded until you turn off the console.

Lower Saxony, GermanyMarlonH86 years ago

Firstly, all races on PAL begin after the green lights are turned OFF instead of ON, That is around 1 second later than on NTSC. Therefore NTSC saves around one second per race for full runs.

Secondly, PAL load-times seem to be a few seconds longer compared to NTSC.

Now for the real DEALBREAKER... Every single race is one lap longer on PAL! That means PAL runners lose "X" amount of time per lap multiplied by "Y", the number of races in the category!

Tl;dr PAL is not a viable option to speedrun this game competitively, unless you want to do ILs, as the timing starts from the moment where movement is possible.
