Alright guys no more excuses we got everything set up and retimed, let's see those console submissions lmao

Decided to retime this to the original 2:18:01 RTA while doing the LTR retiming. I think ending the run before credits is fine as long as you grab the trophy before 1:13 on the timer, just to make the run a little better overall

Alright it's been about a month, and I think it's time we reached a decision here. Unfortunately, I was not able to get in touch with Nara or Munchakoopas over this time frame (no fault of their own), but after communicating with other runners and other speedrunning communities, it seemed that sum of IGT and splitting the leaderboard between consoles and PC were the clear favorites.

Based on the feedback I heard (and to have consistency with Bowhemoth and ILs timing methods), we're gonna try out sum of IGT. If that doesn't go well or we realize they just don't really like it, we'll go back to RTA with the console/PC/Wii U categories ranked separately.

This change will affect current times on the leaderboard for ANY%, 435 MEDALS%, SSA ANY%, AND SSA 108 MEDALS%, but I'll handle all the retimes, so nobody has to worry about resubmissions or anything. Going forward, you can continue to submit with your RTA time or submit it as your Sum Of IGTs, as I will manually retime each run regardless. I'll start this process this weekend, but it may take a while as the next couple of weeks will be pretty rough for me IRL lol

I know some runners expressed in returning to these categories after a timing change was implemented, so I am looking forward to seeing some new Runbow submissions in the near future!

Hey y'all,

Long time no see.

I've reached out to a few runners of the game via twitter and some mods of other communities about how we can level the playing field for runners on different consoles in the categories that use RTA timing. There seem to be 4 primary lines of thought.

Gonna preface this by saying this shouldn't affect Bowhemoth or ILs, since those already use IGT.

  1. Make no changes and keep the leaderboard as it. I think this is just lazy to not try and fix this, but it's still an option to consider

  2. Have a moderator (probably me, Moosh), retime all new runs and old runs. The leaderboard would then include both times but be sorted by time without loads. This is the most work intensive fix, but it's just figuring out when and where the load times are, then just manually retime runs without loads.

  3. Split each leaderboard between consoles and PC versions. This is the easiest and simplest solution, but this already turns the already sparce leaderboards of any% and SSA any% into even smaller ones. This also doesn't address the issue of Wii U times still being significantly slower than Switch / potentially Xbox times IIRC, but that could be achieved with another leaderboard split, but that just makes the visual aspect of the leaderboard being divided a bit worse.

  4. Go the Sonic 2 route and calculate run times as sums of each in-game level's time. This is also a pretty easy fix, but introduces some new questions about excessive waiting on the map or how deaths factor into the final run time (as mentioned earlier), so that would require further discussion.

  5. Take the NSMBW approach where high-level runs are subject to different timing conventions (for example, in SSA any%, a time of 15:00 on Wii U being retimed without load times using method 1 or 3, but a 15:00 on PS4 not being retimed for not reaching some other threshold). This doesn't address any actual new timing methodology, but does make it somewhat easier to moderate (though, Runbow isn't exactly getting a lot of traffic on the regular, so overworking the mods isn't that big of a deal right now).

I would love to hear anybody and everybody's thoughts on this matter :)

Dope run. Thanks for making sure sound effects were still audible despite turning off in-game music.

It's not a real deal breaker, but one of our anti-splice measures relies on hearing the game's soundtrack. If you plan on submitting more runs, it might be worth considering how your can listen to music while still capturing both components of in-game audio.

Again, if it's just easier to not worry about, we probably wouldn't reject a submission as long as we can hear the sound effects, but I thought it was worth bringing up anyway

Nice run! However, for future submissions, could you enable the death counter? The option to turn it on is right above or right below the option to toggle the IG Timer in the settings menu.

It's just a small cheat detection method that helps the moderation team out quite a bit :)

Hey uh turns out i just like completely forgot to do this lol. Let me actually add the SSA stages to the IL board before I forget again

Just realized how funny this run is in retrospect

No idea how or why this YouTube video plays in 29 fps, but it's consistent across the devices and platforms I've tried.

I also don't know where the originally submitted 18:39 RTA time came from, but after retiming it, I determined this to be a 17:50 and 13/29 frames. This could be a discrepancy between 29 fps vs 30 fps, but I don't really see how it could be realistically. If you could clear up where you got 18:39.000 from, that'd be a big help.

Hey small update regarding timing going forward.

Since we have times on both the Individual Level leaderboards and the any% leaderboards now, Alex and I thought it'd be a good idea to clarify how the leaderboards are currently set up.

The any% leaderboard is pretty much the same, except there's the addition of milliseconds when you go to submit your run, both for IGT and RTA times. Since we don't have any% runs that need to really be timed down to the millisecond (as of yet), just leave the milliseconds box blank for both IGT and RTA times when submitting new any% runs. If you do fill it out, we'll just set it back to 000 ms. Once we get to a point where milliseconds are critical to settling high-ranking tie breaks, then we can just go in and retime your run to include both times down to the millisecond. Please keep including using Livesplit times as RTA times (if you choose to include your RTA time at all, remember me and Alex always retime RTA manually) and your in-game time displayed on the final cutscene as the IGT (which we double check but don't need to retime or anything).

The IL leaderboard is a bit different since the levels are significantly shorter. Here, please fill in the milliseconds box when submitting new ILs. Once again, your RTA time will be what you time with Livesplit or some other method *(should you choose to include it), and the in-game time will the final time from the end level cutscene (the level door opening, the cutscene at the end of A-top, or the cutscene end of the Owl fight) minus what the timer started at for that stage or sequence of stages. Just like for any% times, Alex and I will manually look at over both times before verifying an IL, so you don't need to stress out timing or retiming anything yourself!

If you have any questions regarding this or anything else, feel free to reach out to me (]Moosh/MCMooshroo) or Alex (nim_smg1)!

We're working out the kinks of getting milliseconds on the leaderboards. This is a 58.114 IGT and the YouTube video shows a completion of 58.133 (58 seconds and 4/30 frames) RTA.

I'll re-time it when I get a chance later today or tomorrow

Retimed to a 12:43 and 26/30 frames. Great run even though you was obsoleted on the same day!

Retimed to 12:50 and 2/30 frames. Congrats on the back to back WRs!

Nice job on the PB, and very strong B-2. Keep on it!

North Carolina, USAMCMooshroo2 years ago

Another really nice run. With a cleaner B-1, I could easily see you bring the record down to a 12:3X. Especially with final boss fights like those!

North Carolina, USAMCMooshroo2 years ago

Retimed to a more precise 12:56 and 28/30 frames. Very clean run beside the minor hiccups in the final boss.

I'm sure you noticed the little lag spikes in the video around 3:07, 11:37, and 12:42, but luckily you recorded your audio which sounds unspliced to me (also the timer freezes too which I can't imagine would be the strat if you were trying to splice lmao).

Excellent job!

I did think about adding in-game level times together, but I don't know how we'd implement it when it comes to menuing. We'd probably want to see how other games handle this and see if it works for Runbow

The sum of level times isn't unprecedented though, I think Sonic 2 does something like that

Retimed to 18:07.96 - Love watching you improve at this game, keep it up!

Also sorry I haven't added the SSA ILs yet, I thought I would have more free time when I said I would do that originally.

North Carolina, USAMCMooshroo2 years ago

Didn't see any issues with this one. Retimed to 17:11 and 18 frames. Very nice, and welcome to the leaderboard!
