I'd just buy an N8 and ask for setup guides when you have it in hand. It's ridiculously simple these days, and the N8 is the easiest and most well supported now. No one here will help you with finding roms though, that's uh... less than legal.

Livesplit (a timing software) and OBS (a video capture and streaming software) are what most folks use. Both are free, and both run on your computer, not the cart.

Technical stuff might seem a bit daunting, but you will need at least some basic proficiency to start speedrunning. I'd learn how to do it yourself and ask questions here when you run into problems rather than letting someone else do everything. You'll get more out of it and be able to fix your own technical problems eventually. Just my 2 cents.

Feel free to reach out on Twitter, Discord, or Twitch though. Happy to try to help/answer questions.

Keep in mind that if you want to hook up the capture card and still play on your CRT, you may need a spliter of some kind.

Also, another tip: Most early consoles and TVs support S-Video, which is nearly indistinguishable from RGB and component, and which most cheap Cap cards support.

S-Video cables are usually fairly cheap depending on the console, or at the very least cheaper than the official RGB and component cables for most consoles. There's a few consoles that may not support S-Video depending on the specific model though, so feel free to tell us what you're looking to use.

Most use a capture card called GV-USB2: https://www.amazon.com/DATA-connection-video-capture-GV-USB2/dp/B00428BF1Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1546893652&sr=8-1&keywords=gv-usb2

I use one of these because I think the sound quality is better: https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-Definition-Composite-Cyberlink-C039/dp/B00603S1OS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1546893719&sr=8-3&keywords=avermedia%2Bezmaker%2B7&th=1

Don't be me unless you're really tech savy. There's far more tutorials for the GV-USB2. I'd be happy to help with any problems ya run into regardless.

Eh while I agree it's mostly a matter of preference, there are some controller latency considerations, and thus some very clear leaders.

Here's a post where some testing was done on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeague/comments/8wvf9u/controller_input_lag_comparison_more_info_in_the/

The short of it is that using quality controllers over Bluetooth reduces input lag, but also that current gen console controllers over USB have less latency than your standard $20 Logitech.

I speedrun a few arcade fighting games via Fightcade/Wolfmame on PC and I use a Dualshock 4 over Bluetooth almost exclusively now. It's the only controller that feels as responsive as a real stick and buttons to me.

What problems is Amarec supposed to solve specifically?

I had borrowed a GV-USB2 when I was deciding on what SD capture card I wanted to buy and never had any trouble with it recording and streaming directly to OBS if I used the 32bit version of OBS.

I don't use a GV now because I didn't like the sound quality. There was either minor distortion or noise depending on the console, and while I could take care of that with a few simple settings in OBS, I opted for an Avermedia EZMaker 7 to not have to deal with it. The video quality is not quite as good for more modern SD consoles, but I can live with that.

@Bokoblins You might be right, I assumed they were a bot advertising some free to play game, but it looks like they may actually have a record for a high score on the game. My bad!

A lot of forum advert bots like to use "look at my high score on <link>", so it looked suspicious to me.

Just to add, I use S-Video exclusively and the cables are relatively easy to find since they have been the same from PS1 to PS3. The quality is amazing, to me indistinguishable from RGB, and with a GV (which supports S-Video) it's the best you can get without breaking the bank.

I do agree though. The state of PlayStation emulation is almost universally dreadful, PS1, 2, and 3 included. Heck, somehow Sega Saturn is more accurate now thanks to Mednafen. Who'd have thunk that.

I don't think there is a solution, but keep in mind that you could always use a camera, cellphone, or camcorder to take video as well.

Realizing that save scumming a Map Level scroll in Castle of the Winds actually worked to reveal the whole dungeon. The map generation really is static per floor upon your entry on the floor, not procedural per quadrant like I'd assumed.

Well, it's still an emulator, and from what I hear, it's not terribly accurate for some games, and not terribly fast compared to PS2 with fast driver settings.

I'd assume it would only be allowed for the games it officially supports.

It works. I've used my PS3 with a PS2 S-Video cable to a GV before.

Some caveats though:

PS1 classics will always be slower on PS3 than PS2.

If you play a PSN game and the game has filters applied by default (like some Capcom fighting games), you have to turn those off to get the input latency benefits you're expecting.

Works great otherwise.

Hey @Bemels, I understand where you're coming from, but the other side to this from a community perspective is that it's actually a disservice to the rest of the community to have runs that can't be properly verified.

Certainly there can be exceptions, and some communities prefer an honors system that doesn't require verification anyways, but in general it tends to hurt the rest of the runners to not be able to see where folks did things right and wrong, and what strategies were used. It also hurts the board history as you can't see how strategies have evolved in the course of an individuals runs, and it also hurts the runner themselves, as they can't see exact spots they need to work on, and can't ask for feedback. On top of all that, it's also disheartening to new runners who might go to great lengths to legitimatize their runs to be beaten by a picture.

Like folks have mentioned, the bar is not high.

Personally I use an Avermedia EZMaker 7 because I don't like the sound quality from the GV-USB2.

I'll admit the video is a bit better on the GV though.

What type of Mac? Generally they are quite capable (albeit a bit over priced), so it makes me wonder if you are using hardware acceleration when you should be using your CPU. Make sure you have your encoder set to Software on the Advanced tab in settings.
