For archival purposes, these were the first speedruns (of the demo) before the full release. If I missed any, please post them here.

As of today, turbo is allowed for the B button (the firing button.) Inspired by the allowance of turbo in Metroid Dread speedruns, this is for the sake of accessibility, and preventing repetitive stress injuries.

For console:

  • Use a third-party Gamecube controller that has turbo, to play on the Game Boy Player add-on for the Gamecube.

For emulator (Bizhawk):

  • Config > Controllers > Clear the binding for the B button under the Normal Controls tab, and bind it to your preferred key under Autofire Controls.

Let me first provide some context:

I've been wanting to best my world record of Lilo & Stitch for the GBA, a game which I'm the supermod and (currently the only) active runner for.

However, after 15 minutes of play, my repetitive stress injury caused me too much pain to continue. This effectively means I cannot complete even one run of the game (which is 20+ minutes long) because of the constant mashing required.

I recently heard the news about the Metroid Dread leaderboards allowing turbo. I'm SO excited at the possibility that this may become common in other games that require mashing, making speedruns more accessible to a wider audience.

Now, I run Lilo & Stitch on the BizHawk emulator. Technically I can easily turn on a turbo feature, so that I only have to hold the button to shoot instead of mash it. However, I don't know of any methods to do this on a GBA console, as you can't exactly use a third-party controller on a GBA that I'm aware of.

Is it possible to use turbo on a GBA console? Maybe there's a turbo controller one can use on a Gamecube with the Game Boy Player addon?

I care very much about the accuracy between emulator and console. I want to instate rules that are both fair and equal, while also being accessible.

The only option I see currently is to make a separate category for emulator runs and allow turbo for emulator runs only. However, that doesn't help console players avoid repetitive stress injuries.

So I wanted to get some advice from the community. Thanks to all in advance!

Far exceeding any of my expectations, I just beat Lilo & Stitch (GBA) in 21:45. I was just aiming for a mid 22, I had never even considered sub 22 could be real. Could save 6 seconds on the first split since it was sloppy, but the rest of the run was just so solid.

I'm really proud, so I just wanted to share with the rest of the speedrun community! https://www.speedrun.com/lasgba/run/mk75p23y

May be a stretch, since I can't imagine many western speedrunners are fans of sumo as well, but the best (and most authentic) sumo game out there recently got an official leaderboard and discord.

We'd like to invite any sumo fan, any wrestling fan, any fighting game speedrunners - heck, just anyone who is interested - to come check out the game. If it seems too confusing, don't worry; we'll happily answer questions in the discord, and guides are being put out soon.

As it says in the title. Is there a game you speedrun that you WOULDN'T recommend to other runners for any reason? Maybe because of length, difficulty, crappy mechanics, bad music, et cetera et cetera.

Thanks to the creator of the TAS, there's a way to skip the autoscroller prior to the final boss. If you press A twice within 6 frames, you can clip into the ground or ceiling. This isn't humanly possible by spamming A, but it's easy with a simple pause buffer.

You just have to make sure you keep holding right as you do this trick, and only let go of it when the first mosquito is about to finish his first flurry of shots. It's not too difficult to time, but if you want to go for a safer strat, just never let go of right. It costs about 5 seconds but you should hit the "end level" trigger everytime.

Y'know that one game that you pick up and play, have a lot of fun with, maybe even discover some cool tricks or glitches, only to find out no one speedruns it? I'd love to hear about them! I'm always on the lookout for hidden speedrun gems. I would love to try out suggestions from you guys. And maybe this thread can be for finding and sharing these lesser known games with the community!

My underrated game is Cyber Cross. I'm a fan of Sentai, so I decided to give it a shot, and it was more fun than I expected. To my surprise, despite being released over 30 years ago, no one speedruns it! It's fun casually, but I found it even more fun as a speed game. I'm excited to lower the time further and further.

What about you guys? What's your underrated speed game?

This is just something I'm curious about, that I'd love to hear about from you guys.

To speedrunners of retro games: What draws you to running retro games, and why are you turned away from running modern games?

To speedrunners of modern games: What draws you to running modern games, and why are you turned away from retro games?

I enjoy speedrunning games from any era, so I'd like to hear why some runners prefer one over the other. Thanks!

This game is relatively straightforward, but having a No Super Punch category might be favorable, considering that it can one-shot or two-shot every boss in the game excluding the final boss.

And also considering there's some pretty cool kills you can get on bosses using the powerup weapons, mainly the boomerang on the Lobster boss, where you can time your boomerang to glide across the screen on top of the Lobster, allowing you to two-cycle him.

There could also be some cool challenge categories, like Pacifist, or No Hit. If you're interested in running any of these categories, or you have a solid category idea of your own, let me know! (Although I discourage meme categories.)

A glitch I discovered while routing the speedrun for this game. You need the red sword powerup, and you need to be on your last star. Then attack an enemy right when it attacks you at the same time as another enemy (or something in the environment) damages you. So you attack, an enemy attacks, and another enemy hits, all on relatively the same frame.

You will lose your powerup, but then certain enemies who come within range of you will die, and at the same time, you'll take damage. This glitch goes away the next time you jump or attack. And you can only recreate this glitch in certain spots due to it requiring specific enemy positions.

I was able to do it on the 2nd level of stage 6 (the enemy base), where it affected walking enemies, not just jumping enemies, and it even broke open a powerup drone. But I wasn't able to recreate it on video.
