What's up everyone

I haven't seen a tutorial for the oil puzzle (garage puzzle) anywhere, so i thought i'd solve it properly and record the data for new runners. Like i said, i haven't seen a guide/solution anywhere, so i hope i haven't wasted my time. Feel free to take the info and incorporate it into your own walk through.

Please Read: I spent probably an hour learning the variety of solutions and recording them. There is a slim chance i have missed a combination, but these were definitely the regulars. Also, they might not be the quickest methods, but i wanted to start somewhere.

Key for puzzle:

Letter in brackets = Highlighted letter (the goal essentially)

Letters following the brackets = Dials that are red (highlighted)

The final set of letters are the solution to that particular puzzle.

(A) a+c = b,a (A) a+c+d = c,a (A) a+b+d = c,b,a (A) a+d = b,d,a (B) a+b+c = d,c,b (B) b+d = d,a,b (C) a+c+d = b,c (C) b+c = c,d (D) a+b = b,d (D) b+c+d = d,b,a,c

Agreed, and while we're on the case. Self verification on runs seems counterproductive . . .

I agree Ankoku,

I'm sure our active mods will sort it :D

I'm not saying create a category for cheating, just something that permits the door skip mod and controller mapping mods. Rules would still need to exist for this category obviously, hence why i said moderators should suggest a single door mod and a single 3rd party software for mapping controls.

My overall point - We shouldn't merge all of these extras into the categories that are already established and completed how the game was intended to be played. I refer to this as bare bones run. It's would be seen as disrespectful to those runners that have already invested so much. Shifting the goal posts/rules after a year isn't smart, no matter how small the change is. It would be like telling everyone that IGT isn't valid anymore, RTA is what matters. This isn't saying that some rules couldn't be revised in the future, it's just keeping things as simple as possible. Adding an additional category seems like the most sensible solution.

We're now talking about RE2 and RE3, I don't want to continue this conversation in a REmaster thread.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers are plug and play for REmaster, and if people aren't satisfied with that, they have a keyboard. In my opinion, If they want mapping tools, add another category that also includes door mod. Everyone wins.

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

I just downloaded the official drives from Microsoft (which was done automatically when i plugged in the controller), and it works absolutely fine. :)

@Furry I personally don't agree with extras, I believe the game should be run how it was intended. in this case, with a keyboard for RE 2 and RE 3. If you can map a controller in game, that's different.

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

Seems i was misinformed about not being able to plug and play for RE2 and RE3. The same should apply to that. No need for third party software.

I won't lie, i use third party software to map the controller, i just don't submit times. I personally don't agree with 'extras' on legitimate platforms. The game should be run on how it was designed, emulators exist for mapping and accessibility.

In REmaster's case, just make a door skip category that also allows 3rd party software controller mapping. If that category is considered, I would suggest which mod was used and which mapping tool was allowed, this would eliminate inconstancy and further moaning. Basic rules.

Might as well throw my opinion into the mix.

The reason 3rd party software isn't frowned upon for mapping a controller in RE2 & RE3 is because controllers aren't plug and play, REmaster is. There is literately no need for controller mapping on REmaster. In fairness, unless you're totally garbage at stair skating, the time save is minimal. This doesn't exactly suggest it should be allowed, because you then have to ask yourself, where does the 'mods' stop?

Whats stopping anyone from doing something even more ridiculous? "I'm on PC, we should optimise it more . . . . fuck it, lets remove enemies". Obviously it's a bit extreme.

To shut everyone up, open a category that allows door skip and controller mapping. People can view that category how they wish, It's subjective if it's seen as a joke or not then. I think for people that run this game with no 'additional advantages' it's disrespectful to intrude on their times. It seems that the goal posts shift months down the line, rather than making it clear from the outset and that's why Lileya is pissed.

Done, sorted. . . . Everyone is please.

I'm not commenting for my own benefit, i just want to show Roo the support he deserves. He has done a lot to better the understanding Dolphin.

Like Steven said "the leader board was added when the vote ended, not long after that it was taken down by request of people that were going to run it. Until further testing has been done".

That request was made by the same people that wanted the category in the first place. We could have left it there, but we decided it would be appropriate to address the concerns of stability first. Hence the removal.

The testing is being done before it is reviewed and added. If the vote didn't have a majority, there'd be no point of doing the testing. If the results prove it's not stable, It wont be added regardless.

I wouldn't worry Trance, everything is being considered to best benefit everyone.

Thanks Steven, It would be good to see a few people test these settings to see how theirs run and report back.

I agree Steven, I don't think there is stable emulator in existence in fairness. I have used a few in which people have praised its performance no end, and yet they break for me.

This is more about testing which settings best work for everyone. I want to test a few things that have crossed my mind the last few days before saying anything (particularly versions of EMU).

I will set some time aside this evening and hopefully post my own conclusion. Anyone reading this, test the settings on your setup and let everyone know how it ran.

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

Everything is being tested methodically, this takes time. GameCube Emulator is seen to be unstable and shit by a lot of people, i don't want to submit false information to the thread. Regardless if that is positive or not, I don't want to go ahead with false expectations or information.

Unfortunately, I work full time, stream and have a life outside of this, so the process is a little slower than expected.

It might be worth mentioning. If anyone is offering their skills to help, i would appreciate that.

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

I don't think it should be added until it's 100% confirmed. Unfortunately, my time is limited to help find the answer to all these concerns.

Either way, just wait until the information is gathered before it's added.

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

Yes

I'm completely in agreement Zenix. This is how every discussion/decision should be handled, so thank you for this compromise. I'm surprised this thread has remained diplomatic.

Since this discussion originally started, i have been testing the dolphin emulator and can only praise its performance, and am almost at the conclusion that's near as perfect. I have tested RE2, PAL, NTSC, NTSC-J and they all reflect the same stable FPS as console. The only thing that is worth noting, when going through a door, or activating a CGI cut scene (not that the cut scenes matter) the FPS shoots up to 60FPS before returning to normal upon entering the next area. I can only assume this is down to the coding/optimising of the EMU. The limiter causes door loads to lag/stutter, so it's pointless implementing that.

The only test that remains is the side by side test (which just so happens to be the most important). I will only be doing this with NTSC-J seeing as it's the most desirable. Having run GC EMU a number of times myself and visually compared strats and player performance against EGT's of other runners, it appears to be virtually the same as the console. That being said, i want facts, not speculation and anecdotal evidence. xPessimism will run the console version and compare FPS, EGT and RTA very soon.

A couple of things to note: Display input should be standard on emulator - This minimises cheating at face value. You could still cheat i know, but it's minor risk control. I will post some settings that i have been using on the EMU that i would recommend as standard. I have tested most of the setting variances and these are the most stable. If we need to alter them to cater for other players, this is fine.

These settings (including FPS) was tested by making several save states in game that each had unique things/moments that may impact the games performance and comparing the relevant data. Limburger and myself agreed that the first licker hallway was a fairly sensible area to begin with seeing as it has two door loads, a change of music, a CGI cut scene and fast animation changes from the licker. The same things were also tested at Birkin 2, seeing as the background is in motion (which is unique when you think about it). Anyway, my point is that standard emulator settings should be enforced from the outset. I know this sounds silly and obvious to some, but it's easier to set standards/rules now, rather than running into issues later. We don't a runner to play the "stupid card", claiming not to know any better. This usually creates a huge argument.

Finally, I know a lot of people say this emulator runs like crap but i would like to stress that this emulator is somewhat PC intensive to run. My argument - you probably won't be able to run it, the same way you won't be able to run REmaster on PC. It's not an emulator issue, it is a hardware issue. That isn't a reason to dismiss the category.

I know there are a few runners that arent happy about this change and there are a lot preconceptions on certain categories e.g. N64 & Dreamcast is the worst versions. Let’s remind ourselves, this is about time optimisation of each category and having fun (a novel thing i know). Regardless if you think PC is the best or not is subjective. The only thing that PC naturally suggests is that it's more competitive, therefore the time is more LIKELY (note that word) to be optimised. I'm trying to dismantle the prejudice views against certain categories/versions etc. For example, Limburger is a few steps away from potentially proving that DreamCast is actually the most optimal console version to run. This version is hated just because of a short sight from the community. The lesson - Don't always take things at face value. Any run has the potential to be more optimised than PC, just because PC is the fastest, it doesn't make it the best run overall. Please don't dismiss categories and players for that reason alone.

This isn't about attacking other runners, this is about recognising that this is objective and fair. It should be noted going forwards as a community.

If people still don't agree with this, Zenix said it best. When RE2 & eventually RE3 remake happen, we can all play the standard PC, PS4, Xbox One versions. Until then, let’s open the doors to the community and address a market that is easily accessible.

Happy running everyone!

P.s - congratulations on reading all of that.

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

"Breaking records left right and center".

Complains about optimal times, plays RE5 and only plays PC. k thx GG .

Refuses to compete against the likes of Bawkbasoup on console, why?

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

Allow me to educate you. There is 7 billion, and rising in this world. If you honestly think you're the best in the planet, you're seriously insane. The same applies to every runner out there. Either way, you're avoiding the issue, why pull punches on Bawk?

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

I agree Dara.

I have no idea why Trance decided to pull punches?

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

So you don't have any other versions (apart from PC) refuse to buy consoles, and yet you're against Gamecube EMU? Logic.

Also .... what's up, can't TAS consoles?

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

Why the hostility UhTrance? Bawk has plenty of good runs, If you think otherwise, why not challenge his times?

EnglandJayBoneElite9 years ago

That isn't the root of the issue. The root of this issue is not having fair categories that are somewhat consistent across the series. Furthermore to that, not everyone can afford to buy consoles and imports of the game. This essentially, is a pay to compete since biohazard is the fasted and easiest run. As you already know carci, i am from the UK, you already removed Gamecube PAL from the categories because there wasn't enough interest. Instead of removing a demographic, why not remove something that no one actually runs like ext 1, 2, 3 or hunk?

We shouldn't disregard a demographic, interest or no interest. There will always be someone that wants to start running it.

I would like to emphasis that i and most others don't have the luxury of spending hundreds of dollars to import particular consoles and games. They're increasingly becoming more expensive. This is why i'm eager to push for Gamecube emu.

Well equally, that isn't a good enough reason not to add it. Read what people previously said, there is a lot of interest in the category. That also implies there will be a lot of competition . As we all know, it can be tedious to watch cut-scenes. The accessibility of this version and fact that new comers can focus on learning, rather than being frustrated with watching cut scenes over and over is a huge advantage.

The reason i jumped on the "I'm having this problem" to "I demand this solution" is because more than once people have made sensible category suggestions in the forums, and a mod has literally responded with "play PC version". PC isn't the 'be all' of categories, it also has its problems. If you're going to mock people for not being able to run/compete because they cant get it to work, either provide a solution, or don't mock them at all. In fact, don't mock people without reason.

I still stand by my argument, the community have shown interest, why hasn't it been implemented considering RE3 has it?

Both Furry and Zenix have both suggested/implied that this would be fine providing i can (we can) find stable results. This category wouldn't be added unless i could find those results, so what's the harm? Zenix had a perfect attitude towards this. Unfortunately, i think there is a wider issue at hand that i don't wish to pursue for a variety of reasons. I think most people would agree if i said that these forums are toxic.

Also, Thank you for filling me in on some interesting info, i was not aware that modding a wii to that extent was allowed. 'the community' hasn't remotely explained this in an efficient way.

Either way, i have fun speedrunning without necessarily being recognised as 'legit' by speedrun.com on RE2. I plan to route RE3 seeing as it does have an EMU category.

I would like point something out. Although i disagree with how this is being handled, in no way do i hold this personally towards anyone. No real outcome or compromise can be made, so feel free to close this thread off.
