I can understand this. Growing up I had seen a lot of stuff and tend to worry a lot about everyone. Gaming just calms me down and takes my mind off things. In fact I just got Ultra Sun and will do a mono Fairy run on it.
Basically just do whatever helps you relax and have fun.
I'm not too great at names, but this one has its roots in RuneScape. My account name on it is Ancient Drew, and I support Zaros in this game. Being a god of dark order, he has his own spellbook with its own elements, including ice which just happens to be one of my absolute favourite things.
So, I got New Leaf only back in September as a birthday treat, and this is the only Animal Crossing game I ever played. As such I've only been playing casually, but I think I've learned quickly, grown as a player over this time and I made the Perfect Town status on Toy Day.
It is for this reason why I'm considering the Golden Watering Can run even this early as a Crossing player. But at the same time I'd like to be able to keep my casual file around as well as another file to do the run with. As such I went out and bought some SanDisk Extreme PLUS SDHC UHS-I cards under advice from an assistant at the local PC World. Does anyone know if these are OK to use?
I think these things should really be showcased before they get a chance to become categories. It doesn't even have to be a speedrun in the first place; if someone plays through the game or up to said milestone and gives a time, that probably sets the mould for speedrunning later.
PC is meant to be more efficient, but console has that feel to it, you know?
That sucks. :(
By the way congrats on the WR. :) Sorry it was so late though, and thank you for the research. I'll give up on the ledge for now and practice in other areas while saving up for a capture card one day.
I'm not really sure if they can all fit in the town at the same time. Might be wrong. I do plan on doing a Golden Watering Can run in the future.
Don't you have to just, like, open the door and go halfway up the stairs to activate the cutscene and complete the Incendio challenge? This is also in the Avifors challenge.
There's something else I've been pondering since I did my run a while back. Harry somehow managed to jump on this 'ledge' in the middle of the cliff in front of where you jump off the Whomping Willow. This should shave off a minute or two if it's possible to climb the cliff and skip the vine and first Puffapod.
As a disclaimer I'm just going to straight up say this; I have casually played this game on the GC for quite a while now, but I'm probably nowhere near good enough to speedrun this game properly. I think I'm good, but nowhere near that good. That being said I am interested in trying and will practice.
But I was also toying with the thought, what if there was a no L/Z Target category? This would put a lot of restrictions on what the player can do, effectively making it almost a true glitchless category unto itself. No back walking, no backflips or side jumping, not even jump attacks. This will put a lot of restrictions on by itself as tons of tricks are L/Z Target heavy, and will likely not be everyone's cup of tea, but what do you guys think?
I'm currently trying out Slingoween now. It looks pretty decent, though for now I'm just trying to get some hi scores and get my head around it.
Random Number Generator. Pretty much any game you play at all will have it dictating some certain aspects, such as where enemies spawn, the patterns of their movements and when they attack, item spawns, even damage and healing ranges. The most infamous examples would be in RPGs and life simulators such as Animal Crossing and The Sims. Also GTA with random helicopter crashes and traffic/police mishaps. I guess you could call it the game mechanic equivalent of luck.
I had a Jehovah's Witness on the door at one time while running Harry Potter. And I still have nightmares about it now.
I don't really know much about speedrunning Pokemon myself, but from what I've seen I would say checking your mon's IVs firsthand can come in handy. A good template for checking stats and IVs would be psypokes.com.
Say for example you want to do Fire Red. Werster was the first runner I've seen, and in a video he started off with a Mild Squirtle. At level 5 it is a little hard to tell how good this Squirtle will be for your run, so you will need to do the first couple of battles to get a better look into its IVs. In the case of a Mild Squirtle at level 6 after beating Blue's Bulbasaur and getting one Special Attack EV, the best one you can get at this point is:
HP 0EV: 23 (29-31 IVs) Attack 0EV: 12 (21-31 IVs) Defence 0EV: 12 (20-31 IVs) Sp.Att 1EV: 13 (17-31 IVs) Sp.Def 0EV: 14 (22-31 IVs) Speed 0EV: 12 (31 IVs)
If the Mild Squirtle has 12 Speed, it's immediately the fastest Squirtle you can get for a non-Speed-boosting nature. This will come in handy in getting the first attack and running away, which you will need to do a lot of. But I think the real kicker is Special Attack, and since the stat range from beating Bulbasaur is 12-13, that means your fastest Squirtle might have average as opposed to high end power, which you may also want. But to get an even better look in, maybe check its stats after beating the level 9 Weedle in Viridian Forest, after which Squirtle will be level 8.
HP 0EV: 27 (25-31 IVs) Attack 0EV: 15 (29-31 IVs) Defence 0EV: 15 (20-31 IVs) Sp.Att 1EV: 16 (25-31 IVs) Sp.Def 0EV: 17 (22-31 IVs) Speed 1EV: 14 (27-31 IVs)
This will give you a much better idea of how good your Squirtle will be. If it had 12 Speed at level 6 you will know it's the fastest you can ask for, but even if it was 11 you'll know it's very fast if it becomes 14 at level 8. It's also worth noting that you will want a good Attack to take on Misty later on with Mega Punch and Mega Kick, and Special Attack is vital along with the defensive stats shown. The stats I showed are ideal for running.
Also, there is a lot of RNG that comes to play in all aspects of the game. Hope this was helpful, and best of luck. :)
I'll be at work after Christmas but hopefully I'll get myself some splitters or something so I can get a nice and crisp video to stream with. And I'll check on OBS and some Discords including the Sonic speedrunning one that Drakodan recommended when I introduced myself. Sorry for such a delay. In the meantime, I'm still currently brushing myself up on Resident Evil REmake and will look through some other games I have.
Yeah, the thing is...speedruns kind of need to be proved. And that's not really so likely to be done without a camera. I mean I measured my time for a Chamber of Secrets (GC) run by a real clock, memorised it and wrote it down on a piece of paper, but that's the closest to proof I could get without using a camera and showing it here. And without filming (not images as they have more probability of being doctored than films), that doesn't really count.
Thanks for sharing guys. :)
This just happened today. In the middle of a Resi REmake run, after dropping off the pesticide and picking up the death mask, the phone rang just as the mini cutscene that occurs when a door is opened came up. It was landline so I couldn't even pause, so I jumped out and answered, then found I got killed by the first zombie you encounter in the game. This isn't really RNG in the sense of the game's programming, but the timing of the phone was phenomenal.
They're all good but it depends on the shade. My personals would be a sky or icy blue, dark purple and two candidates for green; forest and iridescent. Pretty indecisive really.
