You're essentially saying the Super Mod is incompetent as well as the rest of the team and want a change in leadership, which is just being belligerent. Are you sure that's the correct way to go about this?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't /adgac_extra be created right now by pretty much anyone to provide a platform for all of those additional categories?

@AggressiveCombo You sound like someone who would do a much better job without compensation. The only question is, will you still be here in 6 months, verifying runs for a game you no longer play. Submissions are obviously being verified again, so you should realize just how petty this is.

@AlliexRage

I wouldn't put it that way, as it's just an opinion I formed to push back in defense of the hard work the mods are doing to maintain the community.

Ultimately, you could come up with good enough reasoning for or against, it's just a matter of phrasing. Skipless may be harder to push for outside of category extension leaderboards, but ILs seem reasonable, given that GOI had them. It all hinges on how convenient it is to time and verify the submissions.

Most of these ideas don't make a lot of sense from where I stand.

Distinguishing different controls could be achieved through a filter, and justifying adding a category because you "suck" seems to defeat the point; do you intend to stick with the category and improve, at which point you'll stop sucking, or do you just want to submit a run and move on? In the latter case, you won't produce a remarkable run to begin with and should just submit to the default category, as the content is essentially the same.

Doesn't AS13B play without spacebar already? So, the idea is to separate his run from the default leaderboard as well or copy/paste the submission? Clutter-introducing logic at best, needlessly separating players from competing together at worst.

Many communities deal with suggestions to create categories by ensuring there's demand first: produce your run, make a thread to post it in. If there's continued interest, mods ought to take notice. The middling outcome for keeping leaderboards clean is creating clutter for the sake of players who don't actually have prolonged interest in running the game.

@SirAppleslice

Nope. Albeoris hasn't updated the GitHub repo since 2020. Either you're doing something wrong or there are issues on the latest Windows. Try running it on W10.

@Tyste

Thanks for the response. Loved your quick kill guide in the guides section, very informative stuff. Respectfully, is this just your opinion or the community consensus? I'm aware that resizing the window would be an example of an unspoken rule for this game, but affecting the FPS doesn't seem to fall into the same category. Is the in-game option also disallowed, even though the rules make no mention of it?

@cocicocyn

The trade-off is that the game runs slower. You also couldn't do this without the "Button 4" glitch and some intense mashing. Virtually impossible to pull off in a speedrun.

Hachimen5 months ago

Not sure what to think about this. You just press Left Alt + Space for the window menu to pop up, which reduces the FPS to around 30. With keybindings that don't mess with the Windows shortcuts, you could play as normal with clear advantages, and toggle it easily. You could even do crazy stuff like in the vid below under good circumstances. Thoughts?

@P3nisOfGod

So, I'm not sure if the files for GOG were deleted because they were too "piratey" or Palmer just ran out of space, but here goes, I reuploaded the original .zip that I had lying around.

Note that you can assemble the package yourself using Albeoris' github repository and DxWnd. To make Maya run by default, just add "-r", without the quotes, to the shortcut's "target" path, which should look like this: "X:\Septerra Core\septerra.exe" -r or start .\Launcher\Septerra.exe run . -r -M in the .bat launcher.

I've been wondering what the basic rules for this category should be, and what seems the most logical is to require spawning Doskias' ship and entering it from Shell 2. Any thoughts on this?

Hachimen2 years ago

Yup, it's pretty tidy now isn't it. No more of that f5/f8 handpain. So few clips, though. Now I am actually curious how that warp can even be skipped for No Early Doskias given how it ruined your normal run.

Hachimen2 years ago

So, I found a way to manipulate the pathing of the third companion in the party, which enabled a lot more consistency for pretty much every OoB. Not that this wasn't already apparent in a lot of the clips, but it definitely needed to be understood better. I compiled a playlist of like 42 clips, which should cover all of the current any%. (I guess the plan was to cut any% short on Shell 4, but meh.) Not gonna be easy to memorize all this BS, but it sure will be less random!

Excuse the repetition of these videos - it was convenient to try a thing 3 times and move on as a sign of consistency. I imagine some compromises will have to be made not to lose your mind in actual runs anyway.

Things to point out:

  • While I wasn't sure if some of the strats weren't better because Palmer clipped in so quickly, I did a version of my own because saving on corners almost never seemed completely reliable. Not sure how much skill factors into it, and I sure wasn't good at it.
  • Not every character seemed as good at clipping in, cemetery being one example. Runner having a fat hitbox and all that.
  • Probably something else that I can't remember right now.

Anyway, enjoy.

Been working on setups for the OoB clips (there's a lot), and stumbled upon this oddity.

Interesting how they'll clip in without saving at all. Also, depending on which direction Maya is facing when clicking on the door, you can get her stuck as well, which crashes the game.

Hachimen2 years ago

Here you go. Looks like it counts as an AI manip, as they don't act when they normally would, but the bars charge normally for everyone, so that's a non-issue. Might have something to do with the way I hold down the F key, "react" when the UI pops up and let go. I think I'm at my limit when it comes to testing this, though.

With hotkey

Without

So, this isn't to say QoL is bad and that the slow combat should be put up with, but I found some evidence that it does let you skip enemy turns:

Did 5 encounters like this with and without the hotkey. At 00:46 and 02:04 the maggots move before the bar is fully charged.

And here I always get to act first, effectively skipping their turns. I don't believe this is just luck. Waiting for the full charge is how I've played for most of the later stages of the game, and although enemies do occasionally interrupt me, I get to act first for the overwhelming majority of the time.

Maybe the mod can be improved, maybe not, but I thought I'd share this finding since it was claimed the mod doesn't affect balance.

Hachimen2 years ago

Significantly problematic? Unless you know something everyone else doesn't, probably not. Whereas MrBoogyBam received several pages of being made fun of because he didn't read a sticky named "hey". Not too fair for wanting to help the community by reviewing speedruns (time consuming and arduous) with no compensation.

Hachimen2 years ago

Managed to find a setup for something that I think was still obnoxious when you guys were last running the game.

I also tried just clicking in the top right corner, but there were consistency issues, though it worked like half the time. Lagginess during recording also made the game behave differently for some reason.

Kudos to Professor_Palmer for finding this skip. The inside of the tower on top of it is just straight up awesome.

Hachimen2 years ago

Perhaps a clearly communicated sticky would be a better idea if mod requests are becoming a problem? Can't see how allowing the forums to turn into unusable memeing outlet is healthy for the game.

Traditionally, times for niche categories would be posted in a forum thread, and any competitors were encouraged to follow suit. If enough interest arose, a leaderboard would be created.

That's your best bet if the mods aren't excited about gifting everyone that asks a board barren of activity.

Hachimen2 years ago

Another patch to remove attack animations / leaping then? :) Kidding. Though I guess the nature of (J)RPG speedruns makes it a bit questionable to not be patient with the downtime and invent workarounds. Not much tradition with this weird game ultimately, so probably whatever makes people excited gets a pass. Anyway, sorry for this spammy post chain. Hope the speedruns go well.

Hachimen2 years ago

You know, I can't help but to compare this whole QoL category to something like FF7 with an emulator speedup hotkey to make the combat faster. Kinda lazy. You sure it's worth splitting the leaderboard?
