Would it be possible to program the bar to show phase transitions? We already know the phase transition HP values, should be a pretty simple addition. Very useful tool especially in new patch because of the heavy use of Charge which deals big chunks.

It's so you don't have to view the "report card" cutscene after a level, and also so you don't have to view the soul contract animation after beating a boss for the first time. Takes ~5 seconds of menuing to skip ~20 seconds of game. So about ~15 second time save each time.

A lot of people (myself included) are holding off on submitting runs or even practicing specific runs because everything is so up-in-the-air with this game - of course there are no submissions to categories that change often. That's why we need to add categories instead of trying to shoehorn everyone into playing one way.

Yeah I agree with Luigi 100%. I personally want to run this game mostly the way it was intended but with some exploits/glitches to speed it up and make it a fun competition. Some people want to run games completely broken to get the time as low as possible. Some people want to optimize a completely glitchless route. Whether or not it's a live run or a TAS, generally there are those three types of speedrunners. More categories = more inclusion. Making a separate category is going to encourage people like me to pick up the game again. As of right now the annoying controls for menu glitch completely destroy any fun I used to have running.

Going to echo the sentiment that banning all glitches on current patch is silly. With modern games, downpatching should be the exception to the rule, in my opinion. ESPECIALLY considering this is an Xbox game. Console games available on PC go by console rules, generally. Super Mario Sunshine is technically still a Gamecube-only game run on a Virtual Console Emulator on the Wii. Totally different story.

I'm going to restate my support for having 3 categories, basically fully glitched, glitchless, and a happy medium between. I understand this will make a lot of categories but Cuphead is such a short game and I will argue that having more categories ends up in a more inclusive community, not a divided one.

As far as glitch categories go, I propose:

  1. Downpatch, all glitches allowed. (WSG, menu glitch, phase skips, everything)
  2. Current patch, some glitches allowed, continually voted on by the community as the game develops. (As I am writing this, major glitches like Menu Glitch, Kahl Skip, and Monkey Skip if they still exist in the patch come to mind. But grey areas like ledge clips/cutting corners etc. would be allowed.)
  3. Current patch, no glitches allowed. (No ledge clips, no OOB, no door clips, nothing.)

As well as the different runs:

  1. Any% (Bad Ending). Get to the Devil and end the game.
  2. Any% (Good Ending). Get to the Devil and beat him.
  3. 100%. Get 100% on your save file from a new file. This means: all coins, all supers, all levels, but no Expert bosses allowed. (Don't force runners to buy all items/beat all Casino bosses arbitrarily. MDHR gave us quantifiable percentages for a reason. Just like in other games, menuing and shopping should be cost vs benefit analysis - not forced.)
  4. 200%. Get 200% on your save file from a new file. This means: all coins, all supers, all levels, then a runback of all the bosses on Expert.

I am in favor of adding more niche categories like "Low%", "Beat everything the game has to offer" (old 100% route), hell anything maybe even "beat the game while juggling%" as long as there are enough people interested, but I would expect the 4 categories above to be the main ones.

Looking forward to everyone's thoughts on the matter. I just want the most inclusive community possible. Thanks for reading.

Just FYI, the timing is super forgiving. And if you have Parry Sugar, it's almost 100% consistent. My 100% routing changed because of this. I buy Smoke Bomb first, go do the two Run and Guns, then buy Roundabout/Lobber/Parry Sugar. I think the extra shop is worth the consistency in getting those Menu Glitches. Thanks for the video Glackum! :D

I don't see an issue with segregating the categories into 1) completely glitchless, 2) completely glitched, and 3) a happy medium between. In fact many games have this setup in their community. Undertale for example has several categories due to the nature of the game and that does not seem to be hurting their community. In fact, it brings people closer because different types of people get attached to different categories. Some people want to run fully glitched runs - that's great - but not everyone wants to play that way. Completely glitchless is just as boring for me. Some of us prefer to play a happy medium. Adding another category would make the game more inclusive, and not necessarily less competitive.

I had a discussion with Goodigo about this in Discord but figured I should post my thoughts here as well.

One point I believe warrants further consideration is control schemes. With a "vanilla" control scheme on PS4 and Xbox controllers, this glitch is highly impractical due to the fact that your Cuphead movements with D-pad or Left stick will also move the menu. Likewise, if you make Cuphead jump or EX you will also register an input into the menu. Certain controller users (one that are NOT natively recognized by the game) that require manual mapping do not have this issue.

While it has been said that one can simply remap the Jump/EX actions to other buttons and this is just a matter of adapting to initially awkward controls, (PS4 for example can map movement to Right Stick, and Jump/EX to L2 and R2 to circumvent menuing inputs) this measure is only required on certain setups. Just to be clear, it is technically possible to move, jump, etc. during menu glitch but you will need to make sure you do not enable Vsync or retry/exit by accident. However, using a controller that requires manual mapping can be configured to make this a non-issue. This raises a few questions in my head.

  1. Will all controller schemes - even ones that can be remapped to facilitate movement/combat during menu glitch - continue to be allowed?
  2. If so, should we allow PS4/Xbox controller users to remap their actions using JoyToKey for example (as long as all inputs are 1:1) to keep all control schemes on even footing? Or should we accept the fact that PS4/Xbox controllers are unable to use D-pad/Left Stick/X/O - and those who wish to utilize those keys need to get a different controller/use keyboard?
  3. If not, how would control scheme limitations be reasonably enforced?

Looking forward to everyone's thoughts on the matter.

Hey guys and girls, Guitarmacist here regarding the 100% category. I'd like to suggest changing the rules, they currently state "all items" must be bought to get 100%. As long as you have all 40 coins and all boss clears you will have 100%, and since the last coin is in the casino it adds an awkward pathing at the end of the game that also messes with auto-split. (Basically you have to go to Inkwell Hell, get the casino coin, then go back to Isle Three and buy the last item from Porkrind, then go back to Hell and finish the game.)

I'd like to propose nixing the item requirement but keeping the coin requirement of course. This would also add more diversity in strategies considering buying items vs time loss.

Also, Supers are not explicitly stated in the rules either but "all levels" is. But "levels" could be misconstrued as Run n' Guns only, not Mausoleums. So the new 100% completion rules would be: All bosses (regular), all coins (this takes care of all 6 Run N' Gun requirements as well as all World Map coins and the completion of the tutorial for that coin), and all supers. (this takes care of the Mausoleum requirements)

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks for considering. Really looking forward to working with yall on this run. :)
