All sounds excellent. Glad to have you as a mod :)! The new category proposals are super interesting, I'm especially eager to see the Jedi one in action lmao
I'll see how it affects 101% soon (I haven't had much time to play recently, but when I do I've been almost exclusively practicing that).
So you're saying you still get the shield upgrade if you save+quit while it's softlocked, as long as you submit the chroma/schematic first? If so that could be pretty useful in 101%...!
Nice! I've found switching to a different character right when he's about to stab you and then switching immediately back (you have to do that or else he'll just stab the second character) also works, but not 100% of the time. Good to see a more reliable method.
That’s some sound logic. Alright, we can allow pause buffer
Oh yeah “Glitchless” would be a way better name than “No Glitches or Skips” wouldn’t it lmao
Haha, true. Well for what it’s worth I think splitting them is a good idea, and I think I’ll change the categories later today when I get back to my PC. Pretty sure it’ll be:
Forge Skip and all other glitches allowed, only rule is you need to fight Dave, Squaridot, Mace, and Light Warrior. This category is the only one where you can skip the puzzle room before Light Warrior and skip Hall to the Heart entirely by using Forge Skip.
Exactly what the title suggests, but I guess pause menu buffer could be allowed... not using it might be a fun challenge though? Either way, this is basically a fast-as-possible “casual” playthrough. This includes completing the puzzle room before Light Warrior and beating the first 3 Hall to the Heart fights.
This would mean Dave Skip is only in Any%.
Objections?
I do like the suggestion... I don't want to overcomplicate anything, but maybe that's what I've done by fusing (har har) the two categories. NMG/All Bosses is supposed to be essentially a "normal" playthrough of the game as fast as possible. Like, fight all bosses/don't do any glitches that would skip over something you'd discover if you were playing the game casually. I like how it is right now with 3 contrasting categories, which are essentially "anything goes" (Any%), "full story" (this one), and "full game" (101%). Plus CBF, which is basically a category extension but I thought it deserved a slot next to the other 3 lol.
idk for sure. I'd love to hear others' input on this.
Splits are not necessary. But your video does need to have a timer, at least.
Whoa, well done! It looks like you can't get the level-up charm consistently (or the speedy sneaks) by the Dave warp pad doing this, which is a bummer. But I wonder if doing this + getting the Forge level-up charm instead and forgetting about the sneaks will be faster than what we normally do...!
Updated this today. For current runners, the biggest thing to take away from it is:
Hessonite split in Any% and No Major Glitches has changed. Now it's when the screen flashes white after the final hit.
Previously, the rule was to split when you see her fall to her knees, but this is unnecessary and a stupid idea on my part... if you kill her using Garnet+Connie's combo, you have to wait 4-6 seconds for the white screen to go away before you see her on her knees. I've edited all the runs' official times to reflect this new rule--everyone shaved off a couple seconds :)
Haha, nice find. That glitch has been found before, but unfortunately if you use it to skip to the woods without unlocking Garnet (or whoever you choose for 4th character), the game crashes and won't let you continue.
...although, that was on console; it hasn't been tried on PC yet. Might give it a try at some point.
Thanks!
[UPDATE - Sep 8, 2018]: I made this post a few months ago outlining split definitions for all categories, but I think it was way too strict. It's better, especially for 101% and CBF% where the gameplay isn't linear, to leave it up to y'all to decide how to divide/organize/label them.
That said, I would like to detail just the specifics for Any%, since that's pretty optimized at this point, and then offer very broad rules for other categories.
(NOTE: the official split rule for Hessonite in Any% and No Major Glitches has been changed!)
Names in parentheses are how I label mine, call them whatever you want obviously:
ANY%
- (First Fight): "WE DID IT" screen after the first fight
- (Key Get): "WE DID IT" screen after the fight that gives you Key to the City
- (Beach City Done): when auto-save icon appears (top right corner) as you enter the woods
- (Familiar Grounds): when auto-save icon appears as you leave the level
- (Waterfall Way): when auto-save icon appears as you leave the level
- (South Trail): when auto-save icon appears as you leave the level
- (Dave): "WE DID IT" screen after you defeat him (i.e. wait until after the mini-cutscene where Steven says "so cool")
- (Forge Skip): when auto-save icon appears as you enter Hall to the Heart
- (Spectral Conclusion): after Light Warrior's final "..." when Steven says "is this what you really want," or i.e. when it falls to its knees
- (Hessonite): when the screen flashes white after the final hit on her <-- THIS IS NEW
For everything else, basic rule is: if you're leaving a level, split when the auto-save icon appears, and if you're defeating an enemy, split when "WE DID IT" appears. For item-based splits, I think it's best to treat it like you're leaving a level; for example, if, like me, you have a split after getting the Secret Hoozywhatzit for CBF%, I'd split when the auto-save icon appears when you save+quit the game... similarly, if you have a split after gathering a bunch of chroma, I'd split when you leave the zone where the chroma was (i.e. in my 101% run, I end my "yellow+green chroma" split when I enter the Hidden Grove).
