Nightmare in this game is really hard and unforgiving (you basically die from 2 shots), but it might be fun if someone would do a SS run :)
I wouldn't mess around with it if I were you. It ¤could¤ potentially change the gameplay.
I just tested 1409 and 1413 and it doesn't seem there is any difference in physics properties.
Anyway, I can get the boost very consistently. It's actually very easy. Just roll the garbage can to a certain speed, stand in front of it and if you hold forward, the can should accelerate you as long as it doesn't get stuck. The crucial part is the rolling speed. It doesn't work if it's rolling too slow. I think you also don't need to hold crouch.
It can also be used to propell yourself upwards. Push the garbage can into a wall you want to climb, hold forward while pushing it, and simply hold jump. I haven't tested the maximum height, but average size house with flat roof can be climbed very easily, so there's definitely a possibility for a shortcut.
Oh cool. Thanks for that. I couldn't understand how a non-solid object could boost you, but I guess not all garbage cans have the same properties.
Not sure if it's viable in any kind of run, but I'll definitely test it.
Make sure you don't use any mods like OSP or CPMA and check forum here for some commands. You also want to use map_restart 0 (bind it to a key), bot_nochat 1 and sv_fps 125 or 200. Any config changes are allowed since you can do that via console, anyway.
As far as the versions goes, I think one of the early ones allowed splash damage via walkways (best example - walkways in q3tourney4 with Anarki), but other than that I don't recall any major changes in gameplay, but it's been 16 years, so my memory may not serve properly. I think it was patched in 1.16.

Try lowering your graphic details and resolution (which will also help lowering your loading times). Even though it's an old game, it was never optimized well. Other games run okay?

Yes, but I think it's only there in Enhanced mode.
It randomly drops from NPCs on Steam version (1413 and higher). It's best to use Insane-o difficulty or higher as the drop chance is bigger.
It works if you play the game windowed and the timer doesn't overlap (basically the same thing as having a second monitor).

Despite 1409 being fastest, it doesn't allow you to skip speeches after getting a group angry (eg: speech after leaving library), so it's not a good option. I think the main reason for 1413 being fastest is that it allows 640x480 resolution while 5021 only allows 1024x768 and higher. Interesting thing is that RAMdisk almost doesn't help at all, but it should still be faster. Seems like the bottleneck is my PC or the game optimization. Sadly 5021, which is the latest version on Steam, is quite slow. One second per one level transitition can make up to a minute in entire run.
