Most PC versions come with 3 discs and that's definitely what you want to run if you want to compete on the leaderboard as it has some glitches in it that aren't in the other versions.

If you find a copy you want to buy, you can always post a link and we'll check it out for you. US PC version is just called Silent Hill 2 w/3 discs. PAL version is called Silent Hill 2: Director's Cut and also has 3 discs.

I haven't had a run get submitted in a little while but it's not a very well known game so that's not surprising. I enjoyed running it. I mostly ran it during the week it released and then moved on but I think it's a really weird and unique game so I'd give it a chance if you're looking for something like that.

If you're looking for something like Blair Witch there's Observer and Layers of Fear (both made by the same developer as Blair Witch), Slender: The Arrival, Those Who Remain (that one is pretty new but reminds me of these other games a bit). If you like horror in general, I'll always recommend any of the Silent Hill games. I hate the speedrun for Silent Hill 4 but I enjoy running the rest of them.

Paratopic is pretty unique, there's not much else out there like it.

No. If you select "view rules" on the game page, it says "Third party modifications are not allowed..."

The newest update for Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition allows you to use 4:3 or 16:9 for the cutscenes. The problem with that is, that was one of the "tells" for you mods from what I understand that clued you into whether or not someone was using the Enhanced Edition or not. With this newest update, it may become harder to tell if they're using it or not since the cutscenes might show up in their original format if they choose to use the EE that way. There are plenty of other tells of course but I just wanted you to know since that may make your jobs a tiny bit harder now.

Putting this out there as an FYI/heads-up in case anyone missed the EE update news.

That jump doesn't really look like a glitch to me. 9:56 is definitely a glitch though. Going out of bounds like that.

Just got 1hr09m39s so I'll upload that one instead. Honestly even if this category doesn't get added, it's a fun run. Just run it anyway for fun.

Pennsylvania, USADroogie4Ever5 years ago

Got a 1hr14m54s in my newest run. I've done about 4 full runs today. Finally figuring out where to go and trying to figure out the best routes to get there w/o using glitches. Kind of fun to play through the whole game. Video on my channel in a few hours.

Pennsylvania, USADroogie4Ever5 years ago

Played through the game once to re-familiarize myself with the game. 2nd playthrough, I started a run. There was an extra scene at the beginning I'm not familiar with. On the docks with a bunch of other prisoners. Is that a NG+ thing?

Anyway, I counted time from the second I selected difficulty. Used real-time since I don't have an autosplitter for this game. Died at one point so may not be a great run to start with if they do decide to make a board for this. 1hr53m30s. Video on my channel in a few hours so at least this shows there's at least 1 person with a completed run that wants to run this category.

Pennsylvania, USADroogie4Ever5 years ago

I don't see them doing that but if they do I'll do one Sunday just to see what it would look like. I've put off running this game because I don't have enough time to learn the glitches right now but I'll do a glitchless run just to try it out.

PC version crashes at the mattress transition every single time. Some of the subway stairways don't seem to do anything at all. No crash, no OOB.

Pennsylvania, USADroogie4Ever5 years ago

PS2 also seems to just lock up at the subway. I've tried a bunch of different stairs. The one near the nutcracker has an interesting effect, the game locks up but you can still hear the dogs that are on the floor above you.

EDIT: In every single attempt though the game either stays completely black and never responds again or it returns me to the title screen. PS2, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 all had the same behavior.

Pennsylvania, USADroogie4Ever5 years ago

Tested Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions last night and this morning. Digital only copy with newest patches. Glitch causes the game to crash every time as soon as the glitch is performed. I have no way to test without the newest patch on these consoles. I only have one physical copy of HDC for 360 and it's sealed. I'm not going to open it to test this. I'm moving onto the PS2 version just to see what happens.

I'll mess around with PS3 later today if I have time. I do have an opened physical copy for PS3 so I could try that one, unpatched once I move onto PS3.

If you're patient, you can sometimes find it on the Goodwill auction site. I actually own 2 boxed versions of Silent hill 2 for PC (the big box, and the slightly smaller box). The slightly smaller box I actually just found at the Goodwill auction along with a bunch of other games (31 games total) and I ended up paying $67. Of course with shipping it was more like $97 but that's still only $3 per game and Silent Hill 2 was included and it's worth more than that by itself.

Basically I just checked Ebay, Amazon, and Goodwill constantly for months until I found one for a decent price. It takes time but you CAN locate this game for less than $100.

Well I got 1hr31m16s in my first run on PS2 but I haven't played it in quite some time so some major rust is to be expected. I can confirm the skippable cutscene on the bridge and the changed route toward the end of the game in the Otherworld section.

I didn't get the speed up glitch but again, this is run #1. The intro does appear to load faster. Also, this is not at all related to the run but for some reason the coardboard cutout of the hot dog just before the swan boat section....well that cutout is completely missing in the PS2 version for some reason. Seems like such a weird thing to leave out but it's definitely there on Wii. I checked multiple recordings I did. No idea if it's there on the PSP version. I can test that one too soon.

finally got a new PS2 and should be ready to test this sometime in the next few days.

Ah ok I see where it says they left Early Access on the 24th or 25th. Alright I'll check out the full game when I have time and submit something.

Did they add more content to this game? Because I beat it twice in 7 minutes the day it released.

I have no idea how many runs are done on legal versus illegal copies. Neither do the mods usually. That's not the point. The point is, occasionally an illegal copy will have modifications made to it that may make your runs invalid. The best way to ensure that your runs never get removed from the board are to run a legal copy of the game.

Does that mean you can't run an illegal copy? No, of course not. And the mods may not be able to tell if you're using an illegal copy. And your runs might be on the leaderboard forever. But what if the illegal copy you download makes Claire and/or Leon run 2X faster than normal? And maybe you don't notice. But the mods do. And your runs get removed from the board. Then you're back at square one.

It doesn't matter how many people use an illegal copy of the game. What matters is - are you ok with the risk of possibly having your runs invalidated by using an illegal copy? If you're ok with it then I guess that's your answer because I seriously doubt they're going to go through the effort of checking your steam profile to see if you own the game or not.

The mods here aren't ever going to actually recommend that you go get anything other than a legal copy. They aren't telling you that you can't use an illegal copy, they're just giving you the only answer they CAN give - which is to buy a legal copy. If you choose to obtain an illegal copy of the game and use that to run with, that's entirely on you.

Just be aware that sometimes changes are made to illegal copies that make it obvious you aren't using a legitimate copy and therefore your run can be rejected. For example: some illegal copies of Silent Hill 2 for PC contain fixes that were made by people online. The problem is, those fixes are banned. But since the copy certain runners had didn't note anywhere that it used mods from online, those runners had no idea they were using a copy of the game that would make their runs illegitimate. Times got removed from the board and certain runners had to re-do their runs with a legitimate copy of the game.

Stuff like that is why the majority of mods for a game will never recommend that you use anything other than a legitimate copy. It saves them from companies coming down on them for recommending piracy and it saves you from having your runs removed from the board if you used some modded illegal copy.

Leaderboard update has been finished. All times have been corrected (it tried to default everyone to Time With Loads and it removed the Time With Loads completely so I had to redo all the times one more time but we shouldn't have to do it again in the future hopefully).

If anyone thinks there is any issue with the times, just let me know. Rules have been updated with new wording as well as to point you to the resources section in order to use the Load Removal tool.
