Getting banned for gross misconduct doesn't make the game bad to speedrun, bud.

You'll need to download X360CE, the game always behaves as though it's looking for a 360 controller, so you can use X360CE to emulate one. Configuring the program is a bit of a first-time hassle, so ask in the Discord server for help if you need it.

I was DM'd on Discord concerning this very issue and tried to help as much as I can but I really think this is just a case of asking LiveSplit to do something it's not programmed to do from what I've been told of the issue, unfortunately.

What answers did you expect to receive? Emotional state whilst playing games is an entirely subjective experience, and if you get uncontrollably angry from speedrunning that's not really something anyone can provide an instant solution for. As stated before, maybe it just isn't for you. Otherwise the only real suggestion I can give is to alter your mindset so that you realise losing runs is not a big deal as you can always get on another run.

"I'm with you Tom, this is an interesting situation, but I tend to lean towards not requiring anybody to have to invest anything other than their time to be competitive with speedruns."

Now this is something I tend to disagree with. I personally think this is something that people have been leaning more towards in recent years as speedrunning has gotten bigger, but I don't think the implication that people shouldn't have to spend money to get into speedrunning really has a basis. Speedrunning is a hobby just like any other, and hobbies simply cost money. Of course, there shouldn't be any barriers or obstacles that don't need to be there if it can be helped, but there are many cases where it just can't be helped. If you need to import a different region console/game to have the fastest version, that's what you've gotta do. If you need to buy an older revision that's relatively rare, that's what you've gotta do. Hell, I've invested in a UV flashlight for use with a game I intend to run in the future because the cartridge actually utilises solar power.

I understand the rationale behind wanting everyone to have equal access, but fundamentally speedrunning is not about equity or equality; it's about completing a game as fast as possible. If that requires methods that aren't equally accessible, then that's just how it sometimes is.

Echoing that BizHawk is the preferred choice, with the mGBA core enabled.

The fact that you're using an external tool to facilitate this is the only thing that steers me towards a "No", otherwise I'd be in favour of something like this.

Yeah, this is one of those cases where it should just be taken as an implicit rule that applies to speedruns in general. Saying "It's not banned in the rules, so it's ok" is weak reasoning when you can substitute it for anything else.

"Using passwords isn't banned in the rules, so it's ok!" "Using Gameshark codes isn't banned in the rules, so it's ok!"

At some point it does just need to be common sense what is and isn't permissible.

Gens is not permitted for the Classic Sonic games and you will have to use Fusion, yeah.

EnglandDrakodan7 years ago

The rules are listed on the main game page and the first rule concerns which emulators are permitted, so you're alright on that front.

"I do agree that just running games for the views is never good but for the sake of the question Ocarina of Time and Super Metroid will always get you a ton of views and be popular."

They won't though, that's the thing. Only the popular runners get a lot of views running those games. Right at this very second a search for "Super Mario 64" on Twitch brings up a single stream with over 100 viewers, and then a great number of streams with single-digit viewers. And yes, a lot of those are speedrunning streams.

Speedrunning for views is not exactly the way to get into this hobby. It should always be viewed as a happy coincidence if you get a lot of views, not the end goal. This is particularly true when you want to speedrun multiple games but end up only having an 'audience' for one of your games, if all you're concerned about is viewercount then you'll just end up neglecting your other games.

It's something that will inevitably slow down your progress more and more as you climb the ranks with your current mindset.

PBing is only 'free' if your run still has lots of available timesave, once you get to the point where you actually need to be consistently playing well and not making mistakes in order to maintain pace, you're gonna find it increasingly difficult to get anywhere if you can't just force yourself to keep playing.

Off the top of my head one of the bigger differences between the Red/Yellow route will be Nidoran's learnset, in Yellow you get access to Double Kick quite early which allows it to take on Brock on its own.

Yeah, this has not been verified correctly. By my count the run time is supposed to be 1:45:51 or 52, depending on framecount.

On this topic, the site hopefully has a new policy in place that conforms to the new GDPR regulations in place across Europe. It'll be effective starting May 25th.

Sure, it still meets the requirement for completing an any% run. You can always improve it later by doing a run that doesn't meet the 100% requirements if you want to.

^ This. When you hear people talk about inaccurate emulation, odds are good what they're talking about is a lack of lag. It's not something to be exploited, but rather something to be avoided.
