First off, join the Sonic Speedrunning Discord as linked in one of the stickies, and we can help you get started from there.
As far as tips for starting off, don't reset. As a beginner you're best off building a solid foundation by completing no-reset runs, otherwise you'll get decent at the start of the game but really struggle with the later stages.
For specific things to work on, Knuckles pieces are the priority for newer runners; no matter how good your Sonic/Tails stages are, you'll lose much more time in the Knuckles stages if you get unfamiliar pieces that you just cannot find.
@SuccinctAndPunchy Maybe now you understand why I've coined the term "Useless fucking sack of shit" as of late.
You are aware that the runs don't use the ingame time provided by the save files, right?
@Carcinogen I wasn't trying to imply that I THOUGHT it was you, but that I had every faith that you would not have been responsible for this and would make sure the issue was addressed, maybe worded that a bit badly.
Who rejected this, specifically?
Arguments about how 'fast' a run needs to be before it's considered a legitimate speedrun should be avoided as much as possible, since then the mods are enforcing an arbitrary limit on the leaderboards.
Carci, I hope this wasn't you mate.
Rules on emulation are on an entirely game-by-game basis, and the mods of those games should be contacted for clarification if the game rules don't already tell you whether emulator is permitted or not.
Twitch and YouTube are the two single most horrible platforms for private messaging someone.
Just make a Twitter, it's what everyone uses here. What are you losing by spending 2 minutes to set one up??
Quick disclaimer that a_moustache's Sonic Adventure 2 submission has a mistake: The estimate for Hero Story is meant to be 00:40:00, not 40:00:00.
I'm opposed to the inclusion of 'Meme' or 'Category Extension' boards in the same place as the genuine game boards, since as Kirk pointed out it just looks unprofessional/stupid to those who aren't already in the community in question. The way it is now, with separate boards seems fine to me, since it's only core community members who are going to even see or care about the boards in the first place, so going a little further afield to find them is not a problem. For the rest of people, it can just look ridiculous, plenty of people in speedrunning already don't like them as a CONCEPT, let alone how it actually pans out in execution.
Generally it's better to try and be a somewhat established figure who people know can be trusted before trying to grab power.
This is not the first time I've made that point in this thread, either.
It's a shame you're gonna get totally overshadowed by Ghoul02 D:
If he asked for specific options, don't inject your own fucking game suggestions.
Probably only Saturn games that got a Virtual Console/XBLA release or something similar, and those are escapingly few.
What.
If I use a SNES-to-USB adapter, does that suddenly make it a SNES run?
This is not the place to make that sort of request, and a mod being online in the last 3 days is a perfectly acceptable timeframe to just wait. If no mods have been online in 3 weeks, then you can take action.
Not under the current ruleset, as 180 Emblems is not a co-op category.
And I don't foresee it being one either, if it's just too long for either of you to do alone, then that's how it is.
I agree. I've lost count of the number of times I've brought this up in various discussions on moderation in different speedrunning communities, but in my opinion a moderator is much more than just someone who verifies runs on a leaderboard; they're a representative of their community, and an ambassador for that community to the speedrunning community at large. If someone is doing no part in representing/contributing to their game, then they just don't have much part in being actively considered a moderator for that game.
This isn't a question of showing disrespect to older moderators by removing them after a long time; this sort of issue is not meant to belittle someone's past work or suggest that they've outlived their 'usefulness', it's just a simple matter of fact that moderation is a responsibility that must be treated with a certain degree of respect and commitment. If you can't give that, stepping down and handing the mantle over to someone who is more driven is often the right thing to do.
With that said, I'm still happy to put myself forward as a candidate if any replacements turn out to be necessary. I haven't been actively running the game very much lately, but I still very much like hanging around the community and helping promote the game, and have the best interests of this game at heart. As far as experience goes, I've been running this game longer than some of the currently active moderators, so that may count for something?
