Look at the hammers from bowser, they are different. Both browsers jump forward but they're different hammers
Frivolous post alert.
Thought this was fun to see...
GTAce99 and Myself (Darpey) have been in a battle trading pb "bops" back and forth for the past month or more. GTAce99 got a 4:59.174 yesterday (1/26/18), and I got the exact same time today (1/27/18)
Darpey used -3.62 (wait 1 framerule), and GTAce99 started immediately, so we're on different rulesets.
I left the audio on both streams. We both missed a single framerule, but in different places. First GTAce99 misses the 8-2 "fast" jump, then Darpey misses the bump at the end of 8-3.
Axegrab on same frame

Video(s) to come, depending on availability of stream footage
It's possible to get a 375, but you'll have a smaller window, since the coinblock is about twice as vertically large as the elevator - so even though you will probably get the same x manipulation, with the coinblock you'll take up more frames to get to the top of the coinblock until you can start moving right again, and with the elevator you'll consume less frames - still, if it's easier for you, then go for it.
The elevator is hard to LEARN, but once you get it into muscle memory, it's a pretty consistent trick.
But that way is definitely better than other routes - like the 373 route
or the 374 route
but the elevator bump is still preferable, in terms of raw speed and # of frames that you can "lose" to still get the FR
You did a serious necro post here - confused the heck out of me as I was reading mav's post (from a year ago) about a "new" fpg setup.
I think this is going to be a game-changer in opening up FPG in runs for the non-Darbian/Kosmic/plate/somewes crowd as well as dramatically increasing consistency of it.
I am 100% the wrong person to ask about fpg... I did make a gif of it in slow motion once for the gif thread - but that's the extent of my knowledge. Never even done it rta. There are several active people on the forums though that know it pretty well.
*380,000 FPS not 2500
In case you guys don't follow the YouTube channel Slo Mo Guys - they just did a video (hours ago) on televisions in slow motion (28,500 FPS), specifically CRT, and they used SMB1 O.o It's fascinating to see in slow motion. SMB starts at 2 minutes
I bet you're using a PAL rom - on PAL, the jump on 8-2 is literally impossible without slowing down, on NTSC it's pretty easy
@Jackson_D77 - that question depends if you mean played by an actual human or TAS. It seems like over a 5 minute run with an actual human running the game, it's a little over 10 seconds slower. The PAL world record is only 5:11 ( https://www.speedrun.com/run/emk7ply6 )
However, since "bullet bill" style flagpole glitch (where the level ends without the flagpole even lowering or mario walking to the castle) is capable on every flagpole on PAL but not NTSC, the TAS for PAL is actually a little faster than the TAS for NTSC -
Added "fast" version of 8-2, which can save an additional framerule over "slow" version.
Compared to "slow" version of 8-2
Arcus, in his pb, also has another option for "fast" 8-2 that involves doing a backwards jump on the front lip of the pipe, but for the life of me I couldn't replicate it, lol. You can see it in his pb video.
This is called "fast 4-2" and it's possible in RTA, but incredibly difficult. It was done, but has since been effectively replaced by other "tricks" to save the 4-2 framerule (or other framerules instead of 4-2) that are relatively easier, but still very difficult.
This video by Summoningsalt explains the trick, which was done by andrewg in the world record grind a while back.
Skip to 9 minutes 7 seconds for the "fast 4-2" explanation
Hey, thank you for the congrats =) worked for a long time getting there - like everyone else that has a sub-5 =) - and thank you for being there, was a fun night.
Select+Up or Down works GREAT. Doesn't conflict with savestate, and it's easy to press. Wonderful. And thanks for fixing the bro behavior
So - These are the rules that I have to start for a "perfect" run - while waiting 1 framerule to start (or in other words, setting the timer to start at -3.62) "Perfect" means doing every level perfectly (380 1-1, 375 4-2, good judges 8-1, "fast" 8-2, etc...), without any FPG, BBG, or wall clips.
"Perfect" Pace with -3.62 (no FPG or BBG) 1-1 = 0010 1-2 = 0095 4-1 = 0192 4-2 = 0292 8-1 = 0383 8-2 = 0522 8-3 = 0634 8-4 = 0735
http://agenheimer.com/smb/smbpractice%201.7%20perfect.nes
These all can be adjusted up and down depending on planned missed rules, and starting time. "Perfect" settings for the above rules mean having your timer at -3.62, and getting "fast" on every level (including fast 8-2), without FPG, BBG, or wall clips. You can adjust from there if you set your timer differently. For instance, if you start as quickly as possible rather than waiting 1 FR to start, you'd subtract 1 from every #. If you start on -3.62 (waiting 1 FR) but your route includes losing 1 framerule in 4-2 (374 route), then you'd add 1 to each # after 4-2. If you start on -3.62, lose one in 4-2, and do "slow" 8-2, then you'd add 1 to each # after 4-2, and 2 to each # after 8-2, etc...
here's a zipped copy of livesplit splits which allign with this "perfect" run - which would end up in a 4:58.85 (I think, roughly) if you did the 2 frame jump in 8-4.
goo.gl/XsC4qW --- zipped (.rar) goo.gl/MwfLgb --- LSS format
One particularly nice thing about this pace (with the -3.62 timer) is that the 8-3 hammerbro patters are easy on "perfect" pace, and several sequential slower paces. For example:
on "perfect" pace (0634) First set of bros run on bottom, second set go middle and kill the top bro. The last of the 4 in the gauntlet will jump (run under him)
on perfect +1 (+0.35) pace (0635) First set run bottom, second set run top, fourth bro jumps (run under him)
on perfect +2 (+0.7) pace (0636) First set run bottom, second set run top, jump OVER the fourth bro
on perfect +3 (+1.05) pace (0637) First set run bottom, second set run top, fourth bro jumps (run under him)
perfect +4 (+1.4) starts to get more messy
Since PAL moves farther forward on backwards jumps, don't you only have to do 2 bumps anyway?
Which would make it super easy to do andrewg's "fast 4-2" which otherwise would require luck to get 2 "perfect" backwards jump bumps - saving the FR.
Hey - sure
I might not be the perfect person to ask if it is a rare behavior or not, since I haven't run the game as many times as several people that comment on the forums. All I can say is that I've run through 8-4 on that hammer bro probably I would think at least a hundred or so times, on different paces, and it's never happened, but it happened three times on the same day using the rom hack FWIW.
I use the Powerpak, and downloaded a mapper (forgot what its name is) that allowed save-states. The default button combos for the save-state feature that I have is Select+B = Load ~~~ Select+A = Save - but it's really not that big of a deal for me, I use your v1.6 when I want to start at the beginning of a level, and when I want to savestate (like for specific tricks) I use your v1.4 that still allows me to SS.
The full stream of the above video is - the clip is from about 50:30
Thanks again
When you post your record - the moderators of this game have to look at it to verify the run. This process can take days or sometimes even weeks. Once they have looked at it, you will get a notification (on the "bell" icon) that it has been either "accepted" or "rejected". If it is accepted, it will be on the leaderboards. If it is rejected, it will give a reason why it was rejected.
Congratulations on your 5:21 run - and welcome to the super mario brothers 1 community.
